I noticed while reviewing the spoiler that there appears to be a 5-card cycle of common spells in which:
1) You choose a creature type, and
2) The effect is based on the number of permanents of that type you control.
All but Coordinated Barrage fit these criteria. Barrage is different, in that it seems to count all permanents in play that fit the type, not just the ones you control. (Actually, it doesn't specify where the permanents have to be.)
Does this strike anyone else as odd? I have a feeling it only counts the permanents you control, which really changes its value.
nope. there are a couple other cards that count the ones in play too (the green instant life gainer comes to mind). also it's much stronger this way so I definitely don't see a downside.
It just sticks out like a sore thumb. Why choose just one from the cycle and let it count all permanents in play? No other card really lets you exploit your opponent's Tribal synergy, which is intentional because R&D doesn't want to hose Tribes in general.
Compare to Rivals' Duel which can specifically punish your opponent for NOT sticking with a tribe.
Coordinated barrage says: Choose a creature type. Coordinated Barrage deals damage to target attacking or blocking creature equal to the number of permanents you control of the chosen type.
So my question is can I assign 0 damage to target attacking or blocking creature by choosing a creature type that I don't control? If so this would be pretty good with creatures that have heroic because you could target them to trigger their ability without doing any damage to them, but at the same time, if it was more effective to weaken or destroy an opponents creature you could do that instead.
This is really a question for Rulings, but yes, you can.
That said, this is an 8 years old thread...
