Tarmogoyf costs $50, so he has to be played in your tournament deck. Otherwise everyone will laugh at you. You will be brought to the head judge's table where they will publicly humiliate you over the PA. You will have "LOL...WTF!" stamped on your DCI card in big red letters at the door on your way out.
It's a card to build around. It's good for some sort of GWB midrange I think. Maybe Glittering Wish, etc.

Everything is true in some sense, false in some sense, meaningless in some sense, true and false in some sense, true and meaningless in some sense, false and meaningless in some sense, and true, false, and meaningless in some sense. Repeat this 666 times and you will reach enlightenment.
In some sense. The only good fnord is a dead fnord.
You could even put it in a two color deck, if you can afford to splash a third color. If you have a WB deck that adds G for Tarmogoyf, now you can add one more green creature.
dude this card has singlehandedly made me want to buy Lorwyn. I was slightly unexcited about planeswalkers. But this card has swayed my hand, and made me want this set. seriously...
It's vying with Wall of Roots for the best 0/5 ever printed.
Vying? If these two were in a monster truck rally, Wall of Roots would be the one that gets sandwiched and explodes.
Rumbling Slum looks like trash compared to this, especially with things like Birds of Paradise around; not to mention, all the Canopy Spider-like treefolk there are bound to be! WGB Zoo will be a deck to beat at states, sporting 4 Birds, 4 Gaddok Teeg, 4 Doran, Loxodon Warhammer, and all kinds of Summoning Pact and Slaughter Pact shenanigans (no pun intended ;)). If you're looking for an aggro test for your states deck testing, this is it.
My god, I can't wait to see the other treefolk. Hopefully the common/uncommon treefolk will be more than just a vanilla 3/5, and they'll also have some nice pump abilities.

this is really messed up, and not necessarily in a bad way. it neutralizes firebreathing, neutralizes groundbreaker and friends, and it's probably the card that "deals with the 10/2 creature for 3" this is some really messed up stuff we have going on here...

I disagree; sure, if Doran is out, the +3/+0 is worthless, but the lifelink and trample sure isn't. The other thing to consider is that Birds of Paradise + Loxodon Warhammer wins games by itself. You're not guaranteed to draw Doran; when you do, Warhammer's just good. When you don't, it acts as another win-condition.
Also, correcting a spelling mistake in my previous post: Summoner's Pact.
Holy Krark! This card makes Ornithopter good! And we can now attack with BOP too.
citanul woodreaders is not a 4/4 for 3
dream stalker is a 5/5 for 2
wall of shards is an 8/8 flying wall that can kill akroma
magus of the tabernacle is a 6/6
verdeloth is 7/7
ohran viper and shadowmage infiltrator are 3/3s
char rumbler is now a 6/3
magus of the tabernacle....yummy synergy. 2 monstrous fatties and two effects that severely punish armies of 2/1's. but it shouldn't surprise anyone that midrange beats weenie aggro.
turn 2 Doran off a Birds is the nuts though. its a good time to be a green mage these days.
I absolutely love Doran. This card is fun, useful, aggresively costed. There's nothing better than seeing an interesting AND useful take on a cheap creature. Good job wizards!
You know, thinking about it more, this card really is the hat trick that MaRo talked about in his article on fatties. It's a huge beater that makes certain of your other big dudes even bigger, which is awesome for Timmy, it has loads of combo potential with Slagwurm Armor and Ornithopter and Dream Stalker and a bunch of other weird stuff, so Johnny loves it, and... well come one, it's a 5/5 for three, so how could Spike not be on board? Really nicely done, guys. Nice work. If every card was this well designed, the world of magic would be a better place. Home run.

Only one problem with Doran... He's just too freaking good on his own. Almost every card that you could combo with him to exploit his effect is just plain worse than him, thus not being worth combining.
Current post- Grand Prix KC Modern Postmortem (7/7/13)
I am undecided on how I feel about this card.
Edit:Magus of the Tabernacle is now a 6/6 for 4
I love the women and im a dude, so what get over yourselfs!
and it makes those fat toughness treefolks even more dangerous
It also makes high-power creatures smaller (now groundbreaker is a 1/1).
In some sense. The only good fnord is a dead fnord.
Cheers,
Austin
This card is STRONG.
I'm already working on a decklist...god this thing is going to be good (I only miss Watchwolf. Oh well saffi/gaddok)
peace
^-- And this is exactly why these forums are for whiny little babies who can't deal with the fact that they are wrong. So they go cry to a mod. Lawl.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out; its anti-synergystic. But you wont be needing that if you are in W or B.
If the treefolk tribe gets their tribal two or three color land the cost wont be as restrictive.

*I was suckered into buying a playset of foil Chinese Wishes. I have to do something with them.
