Rakdos + Golgari?

  • #1
Given that we now know the nature of the Rakdos guild mechanic I've been thinking that the Rakdos strategy of going all out combined with the golgari strategy of recycling may end up being a potent combo.
Rakdos would seemingly have a lot to fear from wrath and similar strategies but if the right cards exist to mesh the two guilds they could eliminate some of each other's weaknesses. If any guild is ok with going into top-deck mode it would be the Golgari.
A combo with great potential or a diluted mess?

Oh, I think it will be a very nice combo, especially if Rakdos has a cheap discard effect. Get a cool effect, get closer to achieving the Rakdos mechanic, get some dredge cards or lands into your graveyard early to start up the dredge effect... might even have some gruul things showing up, like the Gruul Guildmage, which is in color and could take advantage of Life from the Loam. LftL itself could supercharge anything that gives you an effect for discarding lands, if one exists...

Life from the loam would hamper the Rakdos keywords because going from 0 cards, to dredging life from the loam to playing it for 3 new lands = 3 more turns until you gain the effects of the keyword again, I'm thinking. Although perhaps Rakdos and Gruul might go well together. first turn seal of fire, popping it anytime you need bloodthirst.

Also, they are both (in the rakdos's case, likely to be) sac-happy. Golgari can recur it's rescouces and replay them to make sure that their hand remains empty. Also, if rakdos has a discard outlet, you can control what your draw will be when you discard dredge cards, so yes, i think it will be the most synergistic 3 guild combo of golgari-gruul-rakdos.

Not many cards are worth dredging back in an RBG offensive deck. Moldervine Cloak and Darkblast are the only ones I'm thinking of that might be useful.

Don't forget about Shambling Shell. It's a +1/+1 counter, on a body, with Dredge. What more would you want?

What about Golgari Grave-Troll? It's like an immortal Mortivore, that even helps put creatures into your graveyard itself...

I would also imagine that in a deck like this savra, queen of the golgari would would add to this with the likley sacrificing engine the rakdos are sure to supply add in recursion from the golgari and fatties from the gruul. should be a very strong aggro deck. I would imagine this will be a top tier deck once dissention comes out. I imagine that this will be the aggro deck that will go up against the orzhov-azorius-dimir control deck
    From MaRo
Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.

Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled

Many interesting thoughts, but are we sure the BRG deck will end up being aggro? It's possible that it might end up being sort of dredge control with a hint of R aggro. Any thoughts?

Well, keep in mind that you dont have to target 3 lands with LFTL. You could just as well target one, and then play it with an empty hand. This could also work very well with Soh's invatational card if it let's you discard land.

Yeah, it's quite possible combination imho... but don't forget about third guild using BRG colors - Grull. Some cards like burning-tree shaman, giant solifuge or even wild cantor can be possible allies to cards from Rakdos and Golgari

if you think about it, BRG can go control or aggro. golgari-rakdos would actually be more of a control if rakdos can support the dredge mechanic very well. a discard outlet combined with dredge can be quite insane, plus the rakdos mechanic would give your permanents a boost.

but if you stereotype B/R, BRG would be better of as aggro, with gruul-rakdos as the major contributors, and since red would be your central color, you can use all the burn spells you want (maybe another zoo deckbuild?? or just plain huge creatures).

Gruul is fast and aggressive. So far, I've heard that Rakdos will be even faster. This leads me to a conclusion that Rakdos will probably work better with Gruul than Golgary. Golgary already does fine by splashing white for hierarch, mortify and fetters.

Well, honestly, I was considering using it with the possable cheap discard outlet I'm expecting from the Rakdos... say an enchantment allowing you to pay black mana and discard a card to give target creature -1/-1. Later on, the ability to pay 1GBBB when you've got tons of mana to distribute -3/-3 however you want each turn may be very fun... that's just the first example off the top of my head. What about some rocking Rakdos creature with an upkeep of discard a card? I'm not saying that it'll happen, but it might...

i think we can expect a discard outlet of some sort for rakdos. this is actually to support their mechanic (which has already happened to other guilds). but i am leaning towards a rakdos-gruul build... because as zombiemachine said, put in white and you get a lot of control from glare, mortify, fetters, and hierarch... put in blue, you get some of the dimir control cards plus whatever cards simic will get. and since gruul cards are very aggressive, and the fact that we would expect rakdos to be similar to the style of a suicide-black deck, they are a perfect match!

-.- Rakdos-Gruul is already Rakdos-Gruul-Golgari, without having to add colors. The leftover black from Rakdos and the leftover green from Gruul make Golgari.

Ahem....the rock + R = the rock + R. all the cards you are discussing now would be somewhat hard to cast in what i only envision to be an aggressive RGB deck, also i predict ot will look a lot like Baxter's "House of Pain II" deck from pro tour 1996, IMO(same archetype, different cards).

you know what i mean.... i am not saying the colors man.... i am saying about the components... rakdos cards + the likes for kird ape, sab-clan mauler, burning-tree shaman, giant solifuge, and rumbling slum IS rakdos-gruul and is mainly built for a fast aggro deck...

rakdos-golgari is would look like a combo deck, using dredge plus a discard outlet that is expected from rakdos cards...

I don't see it as too much of a combo... Rakdos looks to have lots of powerfull, quick cards, that don't have much of a longgame. Golgari has a lot of good recurring cards for the longgame, but not too much that's really aggressive. Gruul has a lot of powerfull, midrange critters. I personally think that a deck with some quick hitting Rakdos cards, powerfull midrange Gruul beaters, and some of the best immortal finishers from Golgari would be quite nice... Rakdos discard feeding Golgari grave effects being a nice bonus.

What about sensei divining top? It is the master top-decking thing! You can even play bob (dark confident) together with it. I am also sure that even though the cult is a fast guild it ain't bad in lategame. You have enough black powercards in the last set to unsure that

Rakdos Golgari and Gruul will probly work quite well together. Seal of Fire, sac to hit opponent and bloodthirst ensues. Yay Bloodthirst turn 2 Mauler is always fun for everyone except your opponent. It's Watchwolf with rabies! Yay. Also, Moldervine cloak on this rabid watchwolf will mean a turn 3 6/6 trampler that can atk. OMCG it is even bigger than that crazy Slum guy. The no hand mechanic makes me pray for a good black card. I wish they mixed guild effects because I want a dredging Rakdos black card so I can abuse my Ichorids and Psychatogs even more. Swinging for 12 on turn 2 is always good, but I can never turn down the offer for more win more cards. Also Rakdos, Izzet, and Dimir should be fun too. I want to draft that in a RAV-GP-Dis draft.

I'm still a Simic junkie. They know how to grow. Let's here it for Golgari Dimir Simic.
