This thread is to discuss what the overall theme/style of Betrayers is. (For example, Mirrodin is artifacts, 5Dawn is multicolor, etc.)
To me, it seems like Betrayers puts a lot of effort into putting high cmc cards back into decks not so much by printing cheap cards that significantly slow down the game, but rather by making cards that let you utilize high cmc cards even when you can't play them. So I guess, kind of the opposite of Scourge, in that, rather than rewarding people for playing expensive creatures and spells like Scourge did, Betrayers rewards people for putting expensive spells in their deck (the shoals cycle, slumbering tora, heed the mists, etc.)
Also, Betrayers seems to have a lot of graveyard manipulation in black and green, which is nice to see, as that has been missing lately from standard aside from Witness.
Also, Betrayers seems to push multicolor decks more than recent sets (excluding 5Dawn) with cards and tribal affects that span colors and encourage using multiple colors. For example, having samurai in 4 colors and Kentaro helping to fix mana. Also, the green baku and the return of gold cards. (ok just one but still YAY FOR GOLD CARDS!)
Finally, blue is becoming more and more of a color that utilizes creatures in ChK block. Not sure if this is the direction magic is headed or if it just part of ChK block. (I hope its just for now. I say make an all instants and sorceries block!)
More emphasis on attacking/combat in general... the ninjas punish people for letting a 'harmless' 1/1 or whatever go unblocked. Fumiko can make utility creatures attack. A lot of the others can either take out opposing creatures or help with evasion etc.
a lot more chaining of effects...whether it's splicing, or the ninja's damage ability, or just killing something so you can use Toshiro's ability.
I'd definitely say the set is more about sneakiness than any set since Tempest, I'd think. More options, more reactions, more ways to make your opponent think. That may not make for the most powerful cards ever, but it definitely makes for fun and interesting play.
Go Ninjutsu!

L5R or MTG, if it's got Samurai, Knights or Soldiers, it's all good as far as I'm concerned.
I think the general theme of BoK is really forcing mono coloured play and tribal decks. The patrons(tribal), the large no. of ogres/demons and especially dependent ones(tribal), the shoals require colour card pitch(monocolour), the alternate splice cost cycle which forces the cards to be used in the colour they are by adding land type requirements(monocolour), the goblins with complementary land based abilities(tribal), all the ninjas(tribal), the green bushi with samurai regeneration and the white kentaro which allows you to pay the converted mana cost rather than the actual cost for samurai(tribal), sosukes summons and the new playable snakes(tribal), the fact wizards made a mediocre(and legendary) multicolour land(monocolour).
Yes I'd say this set is very much based on strategic combat, and choosing when you can be hit by a ninja, if you even have the choice, as well as tricking you opponent with boost spells. The combat abilitites for each color are being pushed to the next level, from shining shoal and the white common that reads ":symw::tapsym::prevent 2 damage to anything" to Isao the enlightened bushi, every color is getting more combat involved creatures.

There are the little red guys who care about land coming into play or going to the graveyard, after WotC's stated policy of nerfing land destruction.
As I said somewhere else, I think WotC likes to make precons showcasing each set's themes. Since a precon hasn't been printed yet showcasing the Akki/LD theme, I suspect one will appear as a Saviors precon, including an extra Saviors card or two that fits the theme.

This is my Jackal Pup. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Jackal Pup is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My Jackal Pup without me is useless. Without my Jackal Pup, I am useless. I must tap my Jackal Pup true. I must tap faster than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must beat him down before he beats me down. I will.
