Just announced, another Hasbro collaboration between Magic: the Gathering and Transformers.
There are 15 double-faced cards + a few tokens and they will be available in Brothers' War Set and Collector packs, the first time Universes Beyond will be included in Standard product. Bundles will also include 1 card/bundle. Each card will feature a regular version that uses art reminiscent of the old cartoon style or a "Shattered Glass" variant (an alternate universe where the Autobots are evil and Decepticons are the good guys).
Six cards were shown today, the remaining nine will be shown tomorrow during the M:tG panel at PulseCon.
i definitely understand this it's clearly round 3 for what they did with "ikoria + godzilla" and "Crimosn vow + Dracula"
for brothers war case here’s the key……Optimus prime and megatron are…brothers
But this time the cards are unique this time by default we know one of the remaining 9 is megatron since hes not in this first
I want to remind UB haters they did transformers before of collaboration the difference this time it’s not silver bordered/acorn stamped and they worded it to work in eternal formats thus triangle holo
The hatred of this will be strong amongst a segment of people. Reminds me of the President in Rick & Morty saying "I clean your litterbox! So your little nerd paws don’t have to touch another nerd’s nerdy poopies while you’re flexing your grody little edge lord anus all over it!" Now the litterbox is no longer maintained.
The cards themselves look very interesting. Starscream in particular really hit the nail on the head for flavor. I hope we see Shockwave, Megatron, Ironhide, and Grimlock as cards, that'll round out my G1 favorites. Oh! and Jazz. Definitely Jazz.
the first time Universes Beyond will be included in Standard product.
I'm confused Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and the 2017 HASCON Promos (including Grimlock) are not Universes Beyond, because they are Hasbro-owned properties, but this is Universes Beyond, because...? Doesn't Hasbro own Transformers anymore? Are crossovers within Hasbro suddenly Universes Beyond? My understanding telly me that either AFR should be UB or Transformers shouldn't.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
Shattered Glass? Is this because the current Legacy toyline has been mining that space for recolors? Honestly, while I hope this has Shockwave in it, I expect nothing but hatred for this. I also expect these to be worth nearly nothing by virtue of being in set and collector boosters.

The HASCON promos were long before UB was a thing and with them being silver bordered likely don't count due to that. Still don't get why D&D isn't UB, but I'm still trying to figure out why D&D sets were even needed considering almost everything in it, outside of named characters, could show up in Magic normally anyways.
While I like this better than Stranger Things, Walking Dead, LotR, and more I still don't like UB as a product and will only consider these cards when there are proper Magic versions. This will likely make a great gift for someone I know.
I don't mind this really, not a huge Transformers fan but these cards seem neat. I'm a bit off-put by the art style in some of them but it DOES captures the artstyle of the show very faithfully so I guess fans will appreciate it more than I do. Also, the designs seem pretty safe both powerlevel-wise and design-wise, so they seem to be collector's items first and foremost, and by that lenses, yeah they are cool. I really like Starscream's design, and I got really excited about Soundwave until I realized he doesn't say "or less" which makes him REALLY situational.
Also, considering both the D&D cartoon and Transformers got special promos and then recently got a Secret Lair and Collector booster slot respectively, wonder what that means for the other two Hasbro IPs that got a crossover with MTG at around the same time (Duel Masters' Nira, Hellkite Duelist and MLP's Princess Twilight Sparkle). Duel Masters would fit well as a crossover IP for Ikoria, while MLP would feel right at home at Theros.

I’d suspect AFR doesn’t fall into Universes Beyond because that IP is under WotCs direct oversight, while Transformers is under a different subsidiary of hasbro that WotC still has to get permission from to use (less expensive permission, mind you, but not just something they can do at their whim either)
Should have given Starscream partner so when they do the inevitable GIJOE cross over he could partner with Cobra Commander. Also what's with some of these names? Goldbug and Slicer, shouldn't they be Bumble Bee and Wheel Jack? And I don't remember Flamewar from the original series.
My favorite transformer was soundwave!!! I’m not the biggest transformers fan nowadays especially since the movies left a sour taste in my mouth but I’m legit excited to collect these!

Embrace the dark you call a home,
Gaze upon an empty, white throne
A legacy of lies,
A familiar disguise
Sing with me a song of conquest and fate
The black pillar cracks beneath its weight
Night breaks through the day, hard as a stone
Lost in thoughts all alone
Lol, well I struck hard luck for my hopes, but I like a lot of these! Megatron, Cyclonus, & Jetfire are all commanders I'd love to build around, and Blaster & Ratchet are some great flavor. Overall, I think they nailed this group.

Don't think Flamewar was from the G1 series. Goldbug was chosen probably because that's the version with a Shattered Glass counterpart, and Slicer is technically Wheeljack's.
the art here is almost definitely reused artwork from unreleased TF:TCG products that were planned before its cancellation. The SG versions definitely are, and the cartoony ones might be as well since each of those characters had a card before cancellation, except slicer I believe.

Why are they using the term "convert" for transformers when the normal magic term is transform?
I had that same question, especially when the IP they are using literally has the word transform in its name and the primary character says "TRANSFORM and roll out!" near constantly.

Legal issues. An article I read said the cards are "notably not 'transforming' as due to legal and trademark purposes the cards can’t say the robots transform."
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

It's a Transformers branding thing, way older than Grimlock, Dinobot Leader. They try to not say "transform" because if that becomes common vernacular, they lose the ability to trademark it. Seeing as Hasbro has already lost a ton of trademarks on individual Transformers' names to other companies and the common vernacular argument (hi Octane), they try not to lose that one word.

Surely they'd never be able to win a lawsuit over the word anyway. Spaceball 1 is a "transformer," so it seems to me like that ship has sailed.

I would advise looking up trademark law. It's very different from copyright law, and they absolutely could win a case for someone else creating toys named Transformers. A single example that pre-dates them enforcing the trademark in a seperate category does not represent the ship "having sailed"

I hope the next UB crossover is The Expanse.
