The last member of the 2-MV rare lords cycle is black with... Clerics. That's how old the tribal stuff we're doing is here. It even comes with Clerics replacing themselves (with other Clerics). Sorry. Zombie fans.
Well I was hoping for Zombies, fearing it would be Phyrexians but I will take Clerics as a consolation prize. Looking forward to it in Standard and Pioneer.

I really like this, and I can see casual situations where a player can build up their board with creatures and use this to drop a big creature as opposed to needing to fill deck space with entomb + exhume.
This guy has changed my mind regarding the BW Clerics for Standard comments I've read around,Evolved Sleeper is one of my er...sleeper picks of the set and the lord is gonna be its best friend, a good curve with some creatures and cheap removal can go a long way, and thanks to lifelinkers an Orzhov manabase can withstand 4x Caves of Koilos and 2 or even 3 Thran Portal. The second ability is probably best left for Commander though, you don't want to pack a dumb nearly uncastable demon in your deck for the off chance that you may get to cheat him in play through a vile ceremony involving this guy and yet another cleric on top.
Else, something tells me most of these 2-mana lords are going to find homes in Pioneer where their tribes have more support.
This one looks fine and thematic to his tribal that more on cheating huge black creature to play at least kinda the win condition of the black cleric tribal in modern
It’s notable that this creature’s ability can be activated at instant speed, so while it is useful just to cheat big dumb demons into play, it can also be used to blank targeted removal on your other creatures in the late game or sac a blocked creature during an alpha strike to tutor out a 2nd copy of this lord.
Zombies already have plenty of lords, including bladestitched skaab for Standard
Clerics have been overlooked for decades (presumably because they're healers, not supposed to be aggressive).
This looks great for Teysa, Orzhov Scion cleric attrition Commander builds, and only costs B with edgewalker out.
I only wish the activation cost was 1 less mana and the body was 1/1 instead.
I'm surprised there isn't a nonlegendary clause on the ability like persist and Unmarked Grave

It's kind of strange that we're going back to tribal strategies so soon after we were on Innistrad. They're all improvements on the original 3 mana lords, wouldn't you say?

They are, but there's no support for any of them in Standard outside of this set. Valiant Veteran isn't the strongest in a vacuum, but it also has the most support in Standard, so they can get away with the others being relatively strong because there's nearly nothing to make stronger otherwise.

Elves have a little support if you dip into Naya colors in Standard, it will be challenging to build. Clerics are decent, nothing great but okay and lots of them. Gobbos is going to be tough. Soldiers have a lot out there but not a lot of good ones as well. Merfolk are basically non existent. Looks like we will have to wait for the return to Ixalan for their Lord to shine in Standard.

Elves have decent support in Standard, it will be the first tribe I run the new lord in. Clerics are close behind as well, lots of them. Gobbos is going to be tough. shadowborn apostle ability not as necessarily needed with this in play you only need 1 and this guy
If they wanted to do Cleric lord..... they should just reprint Edgewalker
And then make the zombie lord

because if it doesn't.... next turn you're facing Griselbrand, Progenitus, Toxrill, the Corrosive or something equally as stupid.

Honestly, there are more good soldiers in the upcoming standard than elves. Brutal Cathar and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben are both huge in current non-tribal white aggro, and Sungold Sentinel shows up there as well, then Cathar Commando and Search Party Captain are not exactly bad, but don't currently make the cut in Standard. DMU gives them Valiant Veteran, Guardian of New Benalia and either Baird, Argivian Recruiter or King Darien XLVIII if you want to add a second color.
Elves come in with literally just Gala Greeters and get Llanowar Loamspeaker and Leaf-Crowned Visionary. You could splash red to kick Yavimaya Iconoclast and there's a 1-drop in Llanowar Stalker.
