• a draft theme caring about a threshold in the graveyard we haven’t cared about before
Could this mean counting different mana symbols in graveyard? It's a shard-colored faction set, so it could fit either as mechanic that could work for each family with treshold at 3 symbols, or to support 4/5 color goodstuff deck with treshold at 4 or 5.
Sounds like it'll be a gotcha thing for a lot of players, who'd have to monitor everyone's graveyard just in case.
EAsy to do in Arena...in paper I don't think people want their cards to be touched by the grubby fingers of others...I wonder, in that case, they'll have special markers on the corners to identify the mechanic so it's easier to observe a la Flashback in Odyssey.

Lame, i kinda want to care more and say how disappointing this is (it is) but i kinda don't have the strengths to go all over m14-m15 outrage again. I just want to skip this set, only thing that is holding me on skipping new capenna are the triomes and maybe ob nixilis being 2+ colors.
they got the same fate the slivers got in the core set.
I thought the new slivers looked way better. These I'm pretty indifferent about. The top one looks kinda like a merfolk vedalkin mix which is fine, but the bottom one looks more like a wet cat person and I really don't like animal people lol. I guess the originals were at least non-human enough to not show up on my "made for furries" radar. These ones it seems like it'll vary art to art for my taste.
They looked much more animalistic / alien , now cat people, merfolk, all become increasingly humans with slight features.
Thats a bad trend for me, maybe its even done so they can more easily switch a card from different races back and forth without changing it too much.
As these "cephalid" could just be humans and changed some features (like the hands / hair / slightly the nose).
Yeah that's pretty confusing and dissapointing. Those aren't cephalid in any sense that we know of. Should have just made up a new race, if they wanted squiggle hair web hand humans.

hate the look of the new cephalids. their old aesthetic style was also lazy, but it was still more unique than just webbed hands and glowy ***** on a human. they should've looked way more octopussy. as it stands they look like crappy merfolk made to look human. not sure why they have to humanize every race so dramatically in the modern era. the people that inhabit these worlds are just as important as the world building itself.
So Maro I think may have been throwing us off a bit. He said there would be multiple cards that let white draw a card each turn. But today we got Raffine, Scheming Seer which has the Obcsura keyword of connive which allows you to draw x then discard x and then put x +1/+1 counters on it. I'm thinking he's talking about it being on white cards. I think the ability could be interesting with Containment Construct madness, and reanimator.

Hopefully I'm wrong lol. I could see the brokers being political in nature and you could give effects to your opponents to draw cards or create treasures. But I think we will have some mono white cards with connive as well.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I don't get the worship of the Otaria cephalids. They're just squids with two arms up and the rest hidden behind a toga, with some extra armor for their leader. Good luck telling rank and file apart. I have no idea what the new cephalids are other than being squishy bioluminescent things, but the only other point of comparison is about as unique as the Human creature type.
Human already cover half the creature cards and planeswalkers. but apparently that's not enough. they need all sentient races to also resemble humans. even non-mammals must look and behave like humans.
I have yet to see anyone actually "worship" the old cephalids, both here and in the story forum. The general consensus is that the old cephalids were goofy, but at least different from other races. Virtually everyone agrees that they should have been improved on. The new cephalids are just humans with facepaint. And the thing is, we already have vedalken for that. (Minus the tentacle hair, but honestly that looks rather goofy.) I mean, Vedalken have already been shown to be morphologically plastic, easily mutating, as shown on Ravnica and Mirrodin. Saying that Capenna vedalken have webbed hands and bioluminescent markings seems like a pretty acceptable thing.
The problem is just so layered with the new cephalids: Not only do they look like nothing like their old versions, but they're also boring (in the sense of being yet another humanoid race). And not only that, but they also look like another established blue race, the vedalken. It's like an onion of bad decisions.
And to anyone who likes these new cephalids, or doesn't mind them, would you like them any less if they were vedalken? Or a new race? Because this is really the crux of the matter: WotC didn't create new cephalids. They made a different race and just slapped the cephalid type onto the typeline.
While writing this I realized why WotC is likely doing this. They have bought into the stupid notion propagated by hollywood that humans cannot emphasize with non-human characters. It's literally not true, at all.
What is true, is that it is easy to bruteforce some quick emotional reaction using visuals alone, but that has no lasting impact and often barely registers emotionally, because it's more of an instinctive reaction. Was I moderately sad when the kid died in the intro of Mass Effect 3? Sure, it's an inherently sad moment. Did I forget about the kid in the next scene? Yes, because I had ZERO emotional connection to it and in my only interaction with it it didn't act like a character at all. (Or as a child for that matter.) Contrast this with the horta from Star Trek or Casita from Encanto. There is an emotional impact to both of these characters that extends beyond the credits of the episode/movie and they're as far removed from humans as can possibly be. Yes, you have to work for it, but that is true with literally every creative endeavor.
Hollywood confuses these two types of emotional reaction and everyone has been parroting their claim ever since. Bleh.

Is that why they made the orochi more snake-like in the last set?

My sole complaint about the new cephalids is that the story clearly says they have no bones, but the pictured ones have a structure that implies that they do have bones.

Shame that's already taken with Strixhaven cards with Inklings on them like Inkling Summoning.
hmmm
Also from kamigawa Dockside Chef
im starting to think i found the tribe “Citizen” perhaps?
Hmm, yeah, don't know what I was thinking when I posted that. Still, the gangs seem kinda center-focused from what we've seen so far.

so the White cards that can draw mutiple teaser cards is nothing more than the Connive mechanic for mono white cards
