Before previews for Streets of New Capenna officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.
First up, here are some things you can expect:
• five mana costs, using existing mana symbols, that we’ve never used before
• a spell that costs 13BB
• a mechanic we’ve tried to get in numerous sets finally finds a home
• a creature type theme for a draft archetype that’s never been used before
• a red creature that can make token copies of creatures you control
• a card that adds WWUUBBRRGG
• a mechanic which first premiered in a Standard-legal set in the 00’s sees a return to Standard
• a card that makes Cat and Dog tokens
• a draft theme caring about a threshold in the graveyard we haven’t cared about before
• multiple white cards capable of drawing a card each turn
Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:
• “Then if you control ten or more creatures, you may play the exiled card without paying its mana cost.”
• “Copy target spell you control that wasn’t cast.”
• “As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature, discard a card, or pay 4 life.”
• “If exactly three colors of mana were spent to activate this ability,”
• “Create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token”
• “When you cast this spell, copy it.”
• “WUBRG, T, Sacrifice CARDNAME:”
• “where X is the number of permanents you’ve sacrificed this turn.”
• “Count the colors of the sacrificed creature,”
• “You may cast any number of the copies without paying their mana costs.”
Finally, here are some creature type lines in the set:
• Creature – Devil Warrior
• Creature – Raccoon Rogue
• Creature – Bird Assassin
• Creature – Plant Dinosaur
• Artifact Creature – Treasure Dog
• Artifact Creature – Angel Warrior
• Legendary Creature – Sphinx Demon
• Legendary Creature – Cat Citizen
• Legendary Creature – Cephalid Advisor
• Legendary Creature – Vampire Demon Noble
Check out the Streets of New Capenna debut on April 7th at 9:00 am PT on Twitch and YouTube.
Is Raccoon an official creature type now? I guess if you count Squirrel Dealer from Unstable then I guess it is.
Also:
a mechanic which first premiered in a Standard-legal set in the 00’s sees a return to Standard
Hideaway, is that you? (Debuted in Lorwyn). I'd love to see Champion but not sure how it would fit here. EDIT: Actually, I'm wondering if Fading is coming back. It debuted in Nemesis in 2000. Or perhaps Vanishing (debuted in Planar Chaos). I say that based on a line from the first chapter of the story:
The city he'd once prowled was vanishing before his eyes and these days he much preferred the company of canvas and sculpture over blade and mark.
"multiple white cards capable of drawing a card each turn"
Can't wait to see those! I just hope they are not too restrictive and that WotC are finally pushing the envelope a bit more on this ability.
Seems way too early for it with how they're progressing with the color. We won't get white weenie machine gun in every format just yet.
I personally expect that this statement refers to not actual card draw but to the likely hideaway mechanic appearing on white obscura cards. Letting players hideaway for a cost and add the card to hand when you “insert trigger here. Triggers only once per turn” seems about right for white.
Man, does “As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature, discard a card, or pay 4 life.” sound like it's on a Bone Shards or Bone Splinters variant.
a mechanic which first premiered in a Standard-legal set in the 00’s sees a return to Standard
That’s hideaway on every level
a card that makes Cat and Dog tokens
AAAAAAAnd Rin and Seri, Inseparable are gonna go from $15 to aproximately $45 for a little while from hype spike we’re getting a dog and cat thing
secondary note the story mentions a dog name Regis so that could be who makes them
a red creature that can make token copies of creatures you control
THATS URABRASK! MARK MY WORDS (episode 1 of the story name dropped him)
hes gonna say something like this then
Creature tokens you control have haste
If the first effect would create one or more creature tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.
if the First effect would create one or more creature tokens under your opponents control, it creates half as many of those tokens instead.
the “first” part is knowing them with standard today
A card that adds WWUUBBRRGG
WUBRGt: Sacrifce CARDNAME
One of those is the halo but which one is the question? Plus the double WUBRG producer that’s gonna make door to nothingness go from $1 to $35 for a few days (hype stock and overkilling)
Specifically, the story features a Cabaretti woman named Jinnie who is adopted by the leader of the Cabaretti and has a cat named Muri and a dog named Regis. I think it's safe to guess she'll be a Legendary Creature that summons both.
five mana costs, using existing mana symbols, that we’ve never used before
That and the mentions of WUBRG made me wonder if you can make a 5 color spell using hybrid mana, that can be casted only using colors within a shard.
Using friend colors ( ) would not work, but using enemy colors ( ) would work.
But seeing that Maro wrote "costs" (plural) that means there is more than one card... It might still be something that connects shard colors and casting WUBRG-spells

EDH BGU Sidisi, Brood Tyrant - Lurking Zombies. GBG Sapling of Colfenor - Forest Growth and Destruction. RWU Zedruu the Greathearted - Blinking and trading. GWB Teneb the Harvester - Enchantments, you lose life I gain life. RRR Neheb the Eternal - Ping people for mana burn.
The white cards will at best have 1 be mono white (maybe a creature). Two shards are UW, 2 are GW, the 2 primary card draw colors. Maro is just being sneaky here imo.
re fading and vanishing: since Wotc says vanishing is a corrected/fixed Fading, I'm betting on the latter vs the former if at all since both are an 8 and 7 on the Storm Scale.
From Nemesis, the free spells counting land types would be interesting given the Triomes but that cycle is technically a color hoser cycle which they don't like.
Prophecy: nothing (no way they do Rhystic).
Invasion: Domain with Triomes? Could turn into 5 color good pile decks but this seems like a shoe-in. I am already going to try and play 5c Lucky Charms anyways.
Planeshift: Gating? Seems unlikely but see above on the disappearing/vanishing story.
Apocalypse: nothing here.
Odyssey: Flashback is too soon; the threshold clue above seems like a red herring so nothing here as well.
Torment: nothing here.
Judgment: Wishes can always just be a thing I guess.
Onslaught: Morph is a no go.
Legions: Everything here is updated/fixed/outdated.
Scourge: Do I need to even mention Storm? Again, the clues above about copies is a red herring imo.
Mirrodin: Entwine is unlikely.
Darksteel: Modular is a no.
Fifth Dawn: Sunburst with triomes could be a thing but unlikely.
Kamigawa block: nothing at all from here since we just had NEO.
Ravnica block: nothing from here, too flavor based except things like Convoke.
Coldsnap: nothing from here.
Time Spiral: Suspend/Split Second are no go.
Planar Chaos: Vanishing.
Future Sight: too many here, I always figured Granduer should have came back with NEO but alas.
Lorwyn: Hideaway is the only realistic one.
Morningtide: none of these fit; Reinforce works with modified creatures?
Shadowmoor/Eventide: Nada here. They don't like the Untap symbol.
Shards block: I think it's fair that they don't want to retread anything here.
Zendikar: Nothing here, landfall is basically evergreen at this point.
What if it was Gating? Like as in Horned Kavu gating?

Like I said, it could be something with the flavor you mentioned. It wouldn't be the worst but not sure if WotC cares about inter "block" synergy anymore. Extend it to more than creatures and it plays around with the ETB of artifacts and such, helps out modified? Idk, just spitballing.
Man, does “As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature, discard a card, or pay 4 life.” sound like it's on a Bone Shards or Bone Splinters variant.
Yeah I bet you're right. A long, long time ago, this would have been a cost drawback on an undercosted black or grixis fatty, but wotc basically gave up on printing creatures with drawbacks long ago. It's for this reason I doubt we are seeing a return of gating or champion either.
edited to add: with that "multiple white cards that can draw cards" hint, he better not mean multicolor cards that happen to have white in them. That is not what commander players have been asking for.
“Then if you control ten or more creatures, you may play the exiled card without paying its mana cost.” = Hidaway 10.
Also the "five mana costs, using existing mana symbols, that we’ve never used before" could be referring to the total value or a combination, so could really be anything. Heck even the 13BB could be one of these.
• a draft theme caring about a threshold in the graveyard we haven’t cared about before
Could this mean counting different mana symbols in graveyard? It's a shard-colored faction set, so it could fit either as mechanic that could work for each family with treshold at 3 symbols, or to support 4/5 color goodstuff deck with treshold at 4 or 5.

Sounds like it'll be a gotcha thing for a lot of players, who'd have to monitor everyone's graveyard just in case.

Something to do with the phrase "sleep with the fishes", a removal spell that makes a Fish token in the creature's place.

Now I'm hungry for calamari...

Off center wedges was Tarkir's thing though. I'm guessing some new hybrid or twobrid arrangement. 2/w u 2/b or w/u u u/b perhaps?
Off-center wedges, yes, but we never had off-center shards.
