Worldfire is Unbanned
Golos, Tireless Pilgrim is Banned
Rule 10, which stated that commanders were subject to The Legend rule, was created in the days when The Legend rule was less stable; the rule remained as an artifact of that time. It’s not a Commander-specific rule, but simply existed as a clarification. Since it’s redundant, we chose to eliminate it. This change is administrative only and will have no impact on how games are played. Rule 11 bumps up to Rule 10.
Worldfire was once banned due to the problematic interaction with floating mana and having access to your Commander. We want to foster a Commander environment where 8- and 9-mana spells are viable and likely to show up in a game, so we evaluate the expensive ones in that context. Unlike Coalition Victory and Biorhythm, which we continue to believe are problematic in that environment, the level of effort needed to make Worldfire effective is sufficient that we suspect it will not be as much of an issue. There are already cheaper ways to do similar things in the format. We believe the social contract and robust pregame discussions will keep Worldfire out of games in which it doesn’t belong.
Golos, Tireless Pilgrim has been a much-discussed card that is both popular to play with and unpopular to play against. There are many problems with the card, but the greatest is that in the low-to-middle tiers where we focus the banlist, Golos is simply a better choice of leader for all but the most commander-centric decks. Its presence crushes the kind of diversity in commander choice which we want to promote. You can drop in Golos and a few 5-color lands into a random deck and get all the ramp and card advantage you would ever want from a commander, with no worries about your mana base. Golos’ ability effectively reduces the commander tax to one and once you hit seven mana (with Golos assuring that you have WUBRG and helping you get there quickly), you don’t need to do anything for the rest of the game except cast spells for free—something we always want to be careful about. We’ve talked to the folks in Studio X and they understand the problems created by generically-powerful five-color commanders that don’t have WUBRG in their mana cost. We don’t expect similar cards to come from them in the future, so a surgical strike now makes sense. We understand that many players love Golos, so we don’t take this action lightly. In the end, the health of the format is our primary concern and we find Golos unhealthy. While Kenrith, the Returned King is a similarly flexible and popular commander for good stuff five color decks, we see it as a clear step down from Golos.
welp the party is over for you golos players looks like im back to Ramos as my commander for my alt win tribal deck
Thank the Heavens. While Golos is a cool card, it's just too good for multiple reasons, and it feels bad to play against.
The biggest offender is the first target is always Field of the Dead and then its a game of getting zombies for free.
Casting big spells from the top is what the card is doing.
I have never seen anybody complain about Golos itself (just the bad problems tutoring a Wasteland for Crucible of Worlds and such interactions), hes the most Timmy commander of all of them.
If a deck gets better by putting Golos as a commander , compared to having an actual Commander that works with your deck ... well, your deck might just be utter crap in powerlevel perspective.
Ohohohoh Golos is banned maaaaaaaaan
RC has balls
Not happy with worldfire unban however. I get the argument "winning with worldfire is not easy", the problem that trolling and making the game irrelevant with worldfire is super easy, even if at the end you don't win.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

Field of the Dead is the tip of the iceberg, because while it's obnoxious as hell at least 2/2 Zombies take some time before they win the game. The World Tree was the real last straw. That stupid card plus Golos says "do whatever the hell you want once you hit 5 mana". You can literally play Ultimatum Tribal with Golos consistently and there's nothing anyone can do about it unless the rest of the table happens to have some land hate before you start vomiting Commander's strongest spells at them. And God help you if the Golos player happens to run Petrified Field. To this announcement I say "good riddance" and let the Golos players either cry or learn how to build decks for once.

Wow, I did not see the Golos ban coming. I just run him in the 99, so it doesn't affect me much, but it's surprising. I get their reasoning, but he never felt insurmountable. I guess I'm apathetic about this one.
If anyone plays Worldfire in one of my games, next game I'm breaking out Baral tribal counterspells and targeting only them. (The deck is literally built for next game retribution, not to win).
Why didn't they unban also Sway of the Stars? at least could lead to far more interesting gameplay than Worldfire.
Only guess is that you will have cards with the held mana but there’s barely any cards that can kill all 3 opponent with one spell (something that deals 7 damage to all opponents)

But opponents draw too, and could draw even response (like Force of Will/Negation). With Worldfire, if resolve, its just so much easier to win and setup a game ending strategy. suspend with Jhoira of the Ghitu. Cast while you got antyhing trapped with any Oblivion Ring style cards. Float even just one more mana to cast a 1 red mana general.
This unban is dementially nonsense. Of all possible banned cards that could lead to even a slightly more interesting gameplay, the unbanned the most unfun and game ending of them all.

Players already had those ideas in the exact moment the card was spoiled, which is why it was insta-banned and never been legal in first place.
Yea, the card either does NOTHING as you cannot cast it without killing yourself, or it ends the game and you win (and in any halve competitive table it does just nothing as theres no way such a card beats any reasonable combo and if you "know" they go for this, chances are the opponent can just abuse it and win themselves with it).
It never ever does anything fun or interesting at all.

The constant stream of zombies is what gives you a completely free bonus that happens to keep you alive and wins the game at some point.
If someone goes the for the tree, thats totally cool, a 5-color deck that wants to play all kinds of wacky mana cost cards is janky enough that this is as casual friendly as possible.
Golos is a artifact for gods sake, how is a table not able to simply kill it over and over again forever ?
(and while you dont need mass land destruction, its really just some very specific lands that you "always" tutor first as they are so much more busted than anything else, and that is the worst sin of EDH , repetitive gameplay if a player does the exact same steps every time).

The problem with the Tree is less "zany build-around for big costs" and more "perfect consistency, every game, by adding 1 card to your 99". I do agree Field's inevitability is a pain in the ass too, but the 5C deck having a better manabase than every other non-mono deck in the table is where I draw the line.
Either way, the real good news out of the announcement that I haven't noticed before:

Genuinely great news. Less Golos, Kenriths and Esikas and more Codies and Tiamats please.
I'm a little bummed about the Golos ban, only because I was converting my Lord Windgrace deck into a 5-color lands deck (mainly to add blue for Tatyova, Benthic Druid and Trade Routes) and Golos was the perfect commander for it. I wasn't even going to take advantage of his activated ability. But I understand the RC's reasoning - having a "colorless" 5-color commander that was so generically powerful that it could lead any deck kind of invalidated too much else.
What good choices are left for 5-color lands? Child of Alara is a natural fit, but I don't like it.

The fact that you tutor a land each time it enters the battlefield certainly helps - as noted in the announcement, its commander tax is effectively 1, not 2. (There are also plenty of cards on the banned list that are easily killed, the issue is that if not immediately killed they too quickly take over the game, so it forces opponents to have removal on the spot or be at a huge disadvantage. Golos isn't quite one of those cards, but its dangerous activated ability plus its incredibly useful enters battlefield ability makes it very strong)
No idea why the unbanned Worldfire. Not a fun card, and if they were ever going to unban it, I would have thought it would have been part of a group unban with Coalition Victory, Sway of the Stars, maybe even Biorhythm.
I've been on team "Unban Sway of the Stars" for a long time, Worldfire is pretty close to being the same card but better. So if Worldfire is fine, surely Sway will come off the list.
Still looking forward to that Thassa's Oracle ban. Where u at RC, I know you can hear me!
In one of the last posts that I posted on this site (back in June 2019), I voiced my concern that Golos was way too overpowered. At the time, I figured that it would just be another great General. In the meantime, Golos has become an EDH powerhouse and although I don't play MTG or Commander much at all lately I'm glad to see that cards like Golos are removed from the format.
Worldfire getting unbanned is much more of a surprise as it falls clearly into a class of cards that the RC has targeted for banning (the 'float mana, blow up the world, then cast your Commander kind). I see the reasoning in wanting to re-evaluate some of these cards and I always appreciate unbanning something over time if the environment has shifted, but I would be careful with something that resets life totals so low. Marath, Will of the Wild will use this as an auto-win, but I can't really see any other place that this would be an "auto-inclusion" so perhaps it will pass pretty much unnoticed for the most part.

I did four color Vial Smasher and Thrasios landfall deck for a while so I could cram Tatyova, Gitrog, and Angry Omnath all together. Thrasios gave me extra lands and card advantage, while Vial Smasher gave me my other colors and supplemental damage.

I totally forgot about multicolor partner commanders! Thanks for the reminder! Yeah I don't think white is a necessity so I could probably do something like that. Tatyova, Gitrog and Angry Omnath were exactly the three I wanted to play together. I don't even own the white Omnath so no need to try and cram him in.
Wonder how long the Worldfire price spike will last before people abandon it for either being too boring and/or annoying. Sheldon Menery said he hopes it's more Painter's Servant situation than re-banned Rofellos.

Worldfire is a card thats never ever fun.
Its just Game over all the time , and thats all its ever doing.
Having it on the banned list is still quite pointless, as the people that play this to begin with, choose their own misery.

Overall super weird changes ...

plus sway of the stars would have been way safer
almost a twins but differences
sway 10 mana when fire is 9
sway goes to 7 life instead of 1
sway just reshuffles everything back to the libraries instead of exiling them and you all still get to have a hand.
