Strixhaven's Magecraft mechanic wants you to keep casting spells, which is bad for our Werewolves and other Nightbound beings that don't want to turn back during the day. Thankfully, this connection means we can have magecraft hate and nightbound support with one simple effect.
Shouldn't "to them" be "to that player" since there's only one player receiving damage?
Card wording is weird these days.
It's the pretty old "he or she" to "they" templating change. Pre-Dominaria (the set), it would have said, "Whenever enchanted player casts a spell other than the first spell he or she casts each turn or copies a spell, Curse of Shaken Faith deals 2 damage to him or her."

I know, it just looks like it should say "to that player" on this card instead.

They seem to have been referring to "that player" on curses for the most part. (Curse of Fool's Wisdom being the exception), but auras enchanting other permanents typically (not always) refer to the enchanted object as "it."
I'd say it's a case of meaning being clear either way so the wording people don't care.
