I for one like the idea of UB, but ... Stranger Things? It has practically no mythology or worldbuilding to pull from. The characters are all regular joes who work and go to school, except when they're fighting monsters in a regular town, and the monsters have absolutely no depth to them at all.

I've never seen stranger things, but from what i know, aside from the girl with brain powers, does anyone else on the show have a specific "skill" that could transfer to a card?

Yeah, the argument that the characters are just regular joes is pretty true. I like Stranger Things fine as a show-- there's nothing wrong with it. But that doesn't really suggest it belongs on a magic card.
By comparison, She Ra (another netflix show) transforms, rides a flying horse, wields a magic transforming sword, has super strength and uses healing magic. I'm not saying they should do She Ra in secret lair-- far from it. But those all sound like things that fit on magic cards. Stranger Things has people driving cars, riding bikes, wielding baseball bats, getting pulled into evil alternate worlds, and sending messages back. It might make for good TV, but it's not begging to be represented by mtg mechanics. Eleven's powers are dandy, but telekinesis doesn't lend itself to mtg mechanics either.
Also, the show's fine, but some people are WAY too into it. I know a woman with a gigantic tatoo of eleven's face, and it seems like something she'll regret.
telekinesis looks pretty magical to me, I could easily think at bounce/blink/taps/untaps mechanics to represent it symbolically.
heck, Portal 3 Kingdoms wasn't magical at all, and they managed to do an entire set of hundred new cards anyway. According flavor to mechanics doesn't seems an issue to me, even in non-fantasy contests. Creativity is the only limit.
It seems like they're looking to get into Sci-Fi and this is their way of testing the waters for its feasibility.
The show has dealt with WOTC by featuring D&D in their episodes, so I guess this is a way of showing "appreciation" for doing so. *shrug* We'll see how it goes.
Collectors will love it though.

Not only that but Arabian Nights is based off the 1001 Arabian Nights tales and WOTC doesn't even own that IP (source: wiki). So as I've alluded to before, Magic is a platform that enables this to take place. Like you say, creativity is the only limit.

It's true. Mtg's first expansion was indeed a crossover. And you can literally cast real people with interesting historical lives (Dong Jhou, the tyrant's life was pretty nuts). But I will say, ancient literature and history does feel very different than "mtg featuring Sranger Things".
Rick, Michonne, and Negan -while adults in an apocalyptic world- were given special abilities and are above 1/1 stats. I don't see a problem with these kids ,other than Eleven, being 1/1 with noncombatic abilities.
But I will say, ancient literature and history does feel very different than "mtg featuring Sranger Things".
At least Stranger Things has supernatural elements going on, P3K however was totally mundane. I'm sure they're gonna make something interesting out of it.
I'm not really into TWD or Stranger Things but think it's cool that the crossover stuff exists. Hasbro used to make the ALIEN toys, and that's one that I REALLY want to see. The Dark Tower would be awesome and absolutely fits MtG flavor. Not sure what else I'd be into off the top of my head. But yeah, I say bring it on.
I don't LOVE the print-to-List idea that much, only insofar as it seems to be a forced reason to buy Set Boosters, the existence of which I don't really get. It still seems as sort of an unnecessary product to me. But otherwise I think it's a cool way to ensure we get MtG versions of anything that turns out to be potentially playable, and I don't have a better solution off-hand.
What annoys me is the game can have all these different IPs, Godzilla, DND, Stranger Things, LOTR...
But oceanic biomes on lands for diverse themes/art? Outrageous.
A dedicated Gishath-style sea monster tribal Commander? Perhaps in the next decade. Maybe. Possibly. IDK.
More unique Legendary lands for settings like Olantin? New Legendary Lands like Minamo or Nykthos or unique designs such as Scrying Sheets? Once in a blue moon
Return to Kamigawa, or at least a Kamigawa (a Magic IP) supplemental product, even if only a single Commander deck out of 4 or 5? new phone who dis

A good way to think of it is less "make people buy set boosters", and more "people are already going to be buying set boosters, so this helps get enough copies in circulation without absolutely flooding the market with them".

For my take they did it again unfortunately in my eyes
1. A show I hear that’s near death (close to the series finale)
2. Crossing over something that’s R rated (I believe) when children play magic the gatherer
blessing is 6 months wait and we get the mtg universe versions (and for everyone calling out we went threw this, it takes months to plan sets and each card takes a while to figure out the design and revisions. (Commander legends took 5 years for crying out loud)

Not entirely you are right at that. But camon man stranger things is just a rehash of a lot of stuff with a retro label just because. To have a lore you first need an identity stranger things is happy at living in the shadow of old retro things
At this rate, one can imagine Commander games in five years will probably sound something like this...
Player A: "I equip my legendary Hobo with Rutger's Shotgun, and swing at your Trailer Park Boy" Player B: "I respond by attaching Cerebro to Spock, and activate Mind Meld targeting Hollywood Hulk Hogan equipped with Vibranium Shield to remove your hobo from combat" Player C: "Wait a Second!...Didn't I still have priority to Quantum Leap Mister Peanut and The Monopoly Man when you planeshifted to Trump Tower?! Player D: "Sorry to interrupt as well, but how many Golden Girl tokens hit the graveyard when you blocked Urkel and Rambo last turn? Player E: "Honestly, even if you all had The Delta Variant to target me and T-800s equipped with Lightsabers to protect you, I'm still crewing The Delorean with The Cigarette Smoking Man now to go back twenty turns and restart the game." <all sigh>

Well, sure, but I already don't understand the purpose of set boosters, regardless of The List's interaction with UB cards. My point is that you typically pull something like 6 List cards from a set booster box, and obviously there are tons of cards on the List so pulling a specific one is a low rate. Even if they adjust the drops (which is also kind of annoying if you want non-UB List cards), you're still unlikely to pull a ton. If the point is to make what would otherwise be limited cards more widely available, then this is the bare minimum.
That said, I (1) don't care one way or another if they make the variants widely available or not because the existence of mechanically unique UB cards doesn't bother me and (2) I agree that as far as the way releases are currently structured, I think putting the variants on the List makes the most sense right now.

Now WotC simply charges money for them (and quite a premium at that).

What i truely dislike is that these cards end up not just silver-bordered fun casual cards, but become LEGAL in actual formats.
