Set is not for me. Few cards I want. But..
Terminal agony is brutal. The art, flavour text just horrific. Terrible way to die, and I definitely want one!
yeah.... what a waste of beautiful art, great name and flavor text on a bad Dreadbore, though.
Damn the art on Storm God's Oracle is absolutely amazing. Well, the art in this set in general clearly has been, consistently. Is that Cymede depicted? Certainly resembles her.
So... I guess that we can produce our final thoughts on this set.
In a word, this set is nuts. This set seems to rank up there with Ultimate Masters and Double Masters in regards to sheer value and power and the boxes are unfortunately (but perhaps inevitably) priced to match.
1. The Mythic Evoke Cycle all seem fairly well-done and are excellent chase cards (even the relatively fair fury, the only one that could conceivably "break even" when evoked). I love that these cards, the "force" cycle from MH1, and counterspell can act as pressure valves for some of the cards being printed here.
2. The Suspend cycle was also done fairly well (except for the Sol Ring card, I feel). Most of those effects are things that would feel nice to cast for free off of as foretold or cascade and one or two may even be playable the "normal way".
3. I really dig the way that many of the chosen draft archetypes blend into one another. The fact that Storm and Affinity were two of those themes is also really incredible.
4. A fair number of rares other than fetches may maintain or quickly regrow value in the near future and the potential for 2-rare packs due to the "reprint slot" makes this set feel valuable (though I haven't heard much regarding EV).
5. The willingness of Wizards to lean into combo with some of these cards/reprints (such as karmic guide, imperial recruiter, Titania, and our first MV 2 cascade spell) is nice.
6. I love seeing support for lesser-supported modern strategies such as merfolk, shamans, and enchantress.
7. I appreciate the large number of legends for commander but truly respect wizards for using reprint slots on cards specifically banned in commander.
8. A lot of the card references on these cards are fairly recognizable for long-term players and there is a good amount of fun in the set, from squirrel tribal to coin flipping to riffs off of storm crow (foul watcher, who is an anagram for hateful crow) and Colossal Dreadmaw (phantasmal dreadmaw).
9. I am happy that there are a good number of interesting (if not powerful) cards outside of the rare slot (looking at Chatterstorm, lose focus, counterspell, echoing return, mogg salvage, skirge familiar, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Quirion Ranger, Prismatic Ending, blossoming calm, Flametongue Yearling, Flame Rift, Gorilla Shaman, Abiding Grace, Tireless Provisioner, zuran orb, tide Shaper, Break the Ice, Sojourner's Companion, and the 10 artifact duals) for various formats to experiment with (including cubes and pauper).
All in all, this is one of my favorite sets so far.
They FINALLY colorshifted Granite Gargoyle! Moonwing Moth was close, but not quite there. Believe it or not, the Gargoyle was on the Reserved List -- maybe that's one reason they made it an artifact.
Resurgent Relief: strong card for a Modern and Legacy Enchantress deck, but there are still tons of graveyard-hating cards at instant speed that makes this new spell useless.
yeah.... what a waste of beautiful art, great name and flavor text on a bad Dreadbore, though.
UGH ALL THESE BEATIFUL THEROS
|| UW Jace, Vyn's Prodigy UW || UG Kenessos, Priest of Thassa (feat. Arixmethes) UG ||
Cards I still want to see created:
|| Olantin, Lost City || Pavios and Thanasis || Choryu ||

Sojourner's Companion: this is Myr Oppressor with a minimal buff. Myr Oppressor has a cooler creature type, though.
Tragic Fall: trollish removal with Hellbent.
Hell Mongrel: too bad that the toughness is 3, the critical number that falls under Lightning Bolt.
