Spoiled on Numot’s twitch stream just now. Pretty simple card and a nifty way to kill big things when your opponent is holding a counter to protect whatever they cheated into play.
Sudden Edict1B Instant (U)
Split second
Target player sacrifices a creature. ”In one future, I see glory. In the other… well, that’s another story.” -Whisper, blood liturgist
So, this is actually a strictly better Diabolic Edict, right? I see no downside in having split Second.
As far as I can tell. Until, at least, they print a card that cares about the total number of words in your hand:
Lexicon Bolt 1RR
Instant
Target opponent reveals their hand, lexicon Bolt deals 3x damage to any target where x is the number of words in the text boxes of cards in that player's hand.
Then this will cost you 6 more damage than diabolic edict.
So, this is actually a strictly better Diabolic Edict, right? I see no downside in having split Second.
This card is good, but we already got a strictly (much) better edict.
How quickly we forget Liliana's Triumph!
If liliana's triumph was split second - yes it would be strictly superior, and despite split second usually being a wasted bonus - as is the discard on liliana's - it isn't meaningless. But here you are comparing memory lapse to remand - very similar effects - but there is no way in which one can be called strictly superior to the other. Actually now that I think about it - target vs. each opponent is also a non-trivial distinction (usually each opponent is a stronger wording, but there may be times you would want to edict yourself - edict away your solemn simulacrum in response to smash to smithereens)
The problem of this Edict is the fact that force the opponent to sacrifice A CREATURE, not necessarily the attacking one. This makes this card a lot less powerful.

I used to be a demigod, but now I'm an omnimage
Hah, I think we've forgotten about those edicts in Modern because they've been pretty much replaced by Liliana of the Veil, Kaya's Guile, and occasionally Angrath's Rampage.

Is there any MU in Modern where we wanna play an edict effect anyway ?
If there isn't now, it's possible they expect it to be very relevant later. An answer for all the new toys for Reanimator, I guess?
Shine on, you crazy diamond
