So what's with the price of Modern Horizons 2 booster boxes? Is this some kind of weird scalping maneuver because of the loss of true MSRP as well as common stores like Walmart and target stopping the sales of trading cards? What's going on? I thought Modern Horizons was not supposed to be an expensive set and only just above regular boosters by a dollar or two? Please tell me its all hype and the prices will fall, because that's ridiculous.
The first thing is that it's an anticipated set, thanks to fetches folks will want it immediately. There are rumors that there will be few draft boosters, but lots of set and collectors. All in all its the usual Modern set hype that will hopefully die down.
Draft boxes are €200, set boxes €210 and collectors €320/350 in (Western) Europe and readily in stock. I’d recommend not buying from the scam artists that ask the ridiculous prices mentioned in the first post.
A pandemic makes it hard to print the usual amount in unlimited print run sets
cabal coffers and enemy fetchlands are reprints (and a few others obviously we will see eventually)
first couple of cards may potentially prove MOdern horizons 2 will do it again on warping formats grief is literally unmask but can't be countered by force of negation and can be flickered by Ephemerate to turn off the sacrifice part and discard 3 cards essentially
My LGS asked me if I wanted to pre-order these boxes, and they have great prices without fail, so I said yeah, put me down for two Set Booster boxes. $215 each. I hesitated but went for it, and I'm glad I did. This is about a month ago or so.
I don't know where you're shopping, but I've found them for less. Set boxes are on Ebay for under $250 and Collector box for under $390. Ordered a draft box from my LGS for $220= $235 with tax. Just because places list it for high prices, doesn't mean people have to buy it for those prices. Aside from Ebay, there are several places that have had them listed for about a month now. Look for them when they're first announced or shortly thereafter. Also, I've already ordered several boxes of the Adventures of the Forgotten Realms set & it doesn't come out for another 2 months. It just takes a little work to save money if you want to spend on these. Otherwise, you can save a lot of money by not buying any.
I'm looking at Amazon, and the prices on MH2 are close to what Creedmore is seeing. The Collector's Booster is $460. The standard draft booster is $299. Set booster boxes are $330. There can't possibly be enough valuable cards in a single box to be worth the pricing.
I refreshed the Amazon page a few minutes later, and the prices are moving up and down periodically. Maybe as we get closer to the release date, the prices will stabilize. Amazon does have a lowest-price guarantee for pre-orders. If you pre-ordered at a higher price and the price of the product is less on release, you get the lower price.
Wizards is really catering aggressively to diehard collectors, large retailers, and financial speculators who can buy enough to average out the variance. These are not for the regular players. ($460 is a good chunk of the MSRP of a PS5/XBox Series X and low-end iPads)

Check what Ryperior listed. Fetchlands are in rare slot and cost 20-40E. Recent history of similar products show high chances of experiencing shortages in supply again. This is all unfortunate and no MSRP makes it even easier to bump the prices. Maybe they actually overprint mh2 and we will get actual drop in card prices.

I was checking out Amazon and some other online sources
This dastardly experiment from WotC to allow various prices and not announcing MSRP needs to quit. I am hoping a lesson can be learned & a return to MSRP happens.
Businesses can be publicly shamed on sites such as Reddit or other websites such as this for going insanely above the MSRP. Give the power back to the consumer. WotC will still get the same for each box they sell. Only difference is that there is a bar set for prices (somewhat... Demand will still adjust prices).
Prices are crazy because the costs are crazy. WotC doubled the costs of all the different products for this set, so retailers have to do the same. Blame WotC, not the stores.

I'm so burned out. Game was so good during the Ixalan era, even creatively. Great story, set design, art, growing playerbase, felt like an immersive experience. Now it's product flood, MSRPgate, Secret Lair mess, borrowing from other IPs since creative/Vorthos is down in the most miserable dumps with the loss of Digges and Luhrs, and a solid in-house team - but at least we gained Nic Kelman right
That's still WotC's fault, because they no longer have a MSRP. That means they can sell the base product at the price they want, and the price increases go up the chain.
WotC has an agreement to sell to Amazon directly without a middleman, so as long as Amazon thinks the product will move, they will probably pay what WotC is asking for. Since WotC doesn't have a middleman distributor like Southern Hobby, WotC earns more. Distributors are probably just following Amazon's lead on pricing
yep, pretty much going to be the standard with these things going forward. no msrp, one or two eye catching reprints, pushed new cards, rampant speculation.
despite it being print to demand or whatever, it'll turn out exactly like jump start. better stock up and hoard it all because who knows when you'll see it again. CONSUME CONSUME!
FOMO is strong with these new premium lotto tickets.
Your distributors are morons...ours are SLIGHTLY above standard sets, we'll sell the draft and set boxes with the same margin as any other set; 13% lol

I have let go of the mindset that I have to have everything and have it right away when it comes out a long time ago. The flood of product also means more to choose from. Just pick out the singles and a selection of sealed product you want and you should be good. Life is much better that way.

I follow the same principle. It's not product fatigue for me, but all the radical changes and negativity. Feels like the same disregard that YGO has

People were also complaining this much during Ixalan, just about wildly different things. Standard was on the opposite end of the power spectrum as it is today (to very similar results), every other format was stagnating (even Commander), and it was the peak of the "named characters not getting a card" phenomenon and near-zero reprints with the oncoming death of the Masters sets.
This is why I only buy singles for what I'm needing however with the current labor shortage crisis affecting the U.S. Postal Service, it's been causing major delays on a lot of peoples' orders from online vendors and eBay sellers. Another reason for the high prices for Modern Horizons 2 could have something to do with major retailers like Walmart and Target "persuading" scalpers to order on Amazon where they might not have to pay for MSRP. If this ends up being Jumpstart 2.0 then expect the supply to never be corrected.
It's possible that If we had gotten all 10 Fetches in Modern Horizons 2 then the EV for a box would probably be much higher than it already is at least in terms of being reprinted at Normal Rare instead of Mythic. It still doesn't change the fact that Allied Fetches at Normal Rare will still be worth more than Enemy Fetches at Normal Rare If they're being valued at $25 bare minimum unless Scalding Tarn and Misty Rainforest never goes down in price. The demand will ALWAYS be higher than the supply for Fetches because that's just how it is.

same can be said for the Tyranosaurus as a attempt to make a less broken Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis
basically i can assure you it's hype stock and some of these are probably scammers and the price will drop quite a bit once released
