Diamond Lion says 'Activate as an instant' as a timing restriction, nothing more. It's still an activated mana ability and resolves immediately.... but you can only do it when you have priority, so you can't pop the Lion while you're in the middle of casting a spell like you can with almost every other mana ability.
When the original Lion's Eye Diamond was made way back in 1996, the rules were much murkier and indistinct - it was a time when you had to activate your mana up front and it was impossible to use LED to cast a spell from your hand. When the 6th Edition overhaul happened in 1999, a 'you can only activate this as an instant' line was added. It used to say 'Activate this only when you could cast an instant' until recently.
This Lion is obviously a homage to LED.
And no, you can't use Voidslime on any activated mana ability for they don't use the stack.
I just answered about the Lion in my prior post. Because the Lion is a homage to LED, which has that restriction for when it was made, you couldn't use LED to cast a card from hand.
As for Urza's Saga - it's literally looking for an artifact that has a mana cost of 0 or 1 - nothing else. It has to have a zero symbol or a 1 symbol.

BUt LED and Lion is no longer mana abilities so, yes he can use activated abilities' counters.
They are still mana abilties. Nothing has changed about it. The new wording doesn't change any rules or interactions - just a shorter phrasing for the same timing restriction. A mana ability is an activated ability that doesn't target and isn't a walker loyalty ability. That's simply a timing restriction that says you can only activate it when you can cast an instant - thus you can't pop them while you're in the middle of casting a spell.
Why we need both the peasant and the citizen creature types?

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.

I'm wondering why Halfling is needed. I get it's a D&D race and it's a D&D set, but why not just make it Kithkin? This is going to be the same problem with the LOTR cards with most likely created Hobbit creature type.
The reason for LED and Diamond Lion to have a timing restriction is that without it and 6th Ed. rules, LED is just a Black Lotus, pretty much. Because you can put a spell from the hand on the stack, then draw mana, which makes the "discard your hand" penalty almost toothless.
It's funny because I predicted old-bordered enemy fetches in MH2 like half a year ago, back before TSR was released. I didn't think they'd actually do it, though!
To all the people who think that Diamond Lion's ability isn't a mana ability and can be countered, or that it doesn't need the "activate as an instant" line, or that Urza's Saga's last ability can fetch things like Lotus Bloom or Engineered Explosives, even after having it explained to you: You don't understand the game. This is why we don't have higher-complexity cards in Standard sets.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

...Are you friggin joking me? Are you serious?
Start watching at 35:01 and you will see that the enemy fetches in MH2 were OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED BY WIZARDS on September 1st last years during the Zendikar rising announcements. Like, they directly say it. No hinting. No gentle nudging or "it's possible". They flat out say that it's happening.
How have we had so many people within the past 2 months debating over whether it could really happen or not or debating whether wizards would really do it after it was flat out announced 8-goshdarn-months ago?

Is this a meme that I'm missing or something?
If you look at his post again, OP specifically mentions 'old border' and TSR. we knew that fetches were coming, we did not know that they would be available in old border, which makes them a LOT more exciting

Derp, I am a dumb.
My apologies. I have seen so many people (over a dozen) asking, "Can we really be sure that there are fetches in MH2 or is it just a 'possibility'?" within the past month that I may have flipped my lid for a moment.
I still think the last line on the Lion is unnecessarily.
It's weird, but there's a good reason for it. When you cast a spell, one of the steps after it gets put on the stack is "activate mana abilities", which allows you to tap stuff to finish paying for it. If Lion's Eye Diamond or Diamond Lion didn't have that last line, you'd be able to take a card from hand, put it on the stack, go through the rest of the motions of picking targets and what not, and only *then* activate the ability during the mana ability step, discarding your hand after you've already removed the spell that you're casting from it. Since it has that line, you can't activate it in the middle of an ability, and have to use it *before* you start casting the spell, which prevents you from using it to cast a spell in your hand.

So only modern, a format characterized by the inclusion of former standard sets, gets "higher-complexity cards"? I guess I'm not smart enough to understand how that premise works.

The more cards you have in a card pool vastly increases the number of interactions and complexity of a format. There is no question that Modern is a more complex format than any given Standard. Even though it is largely made up of cards that were once in standard. Similarly, Legacy is more complex than Modern is, the potential interactions are huge. If WotC is supporting Modern as their (lower case l) legacy format they undoubtedly feel they can increase the complexity in Modern because players who gravitate toward Modern over Standard are going to be more acclimated to a larger number of complex situations.

What would be the differenece between that card and the same card without the last sentence (Activate only as an instant.)?
Instants use the stack, mana abilities do not. I believe the ability, text as written, can be Voidslimed.

I know but every creature sacrifice to get mana uses the stack. Or doesn't?
What is the difference between the Lion and for example Wild Cantor? Can I voidslinme the Cantor's ability?

why has the Lion the wording "activate only as an instant" ? why is this neccessary ?
and why does ursa's sage talk about mana cost ? i thought the new wording is mana value.
