Shouldn't be too surprising by magic today
anyway reason I’m posting is they said the walker decks still exist for core sets so D&D is not a core set
I don't like Commander decks being limited to one plane. I miss the diversity of seeing other planes we haven't revisited in a while get thematic cards in Commander, especially past legends without cards, or new versions of them.

It does add credible to the thoughts we won't have any planeswalkers in the set and why they might be why we got a "4th" planeswalker in Kaldheim and Strixhaven.

Wotc said that core sets still have planeswalker decks for those who want to learn the game by playing the game by its regular rules. If that is the case, what is their product to buy if there isn't a core set in 2021?
It seems to me that WOTC has zero confidence in selling a preconstructed product that focuses on Magic the Gathering, and not some other game that happens to use MTG cards.
The majority of the precons need to be your 60 card regular Magic deck, not Commander. If WOTC says they changed the Planeswalker decks to Commander decks, because everybody else is playing Commander, it means they failed at selling the regular game to new players.
It does add credible to the thoughts we won't have any planeswalkers in the set and why they might be why we got a "4th" planeswalker in Kaldheim and Strixhaven.
Damn i really hope so. **** planeswalkers.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
It does add credible to the thoughts we won't have any planeswalkers in the set and why they might be why we got a "4th" planeswalker in Kaldheim and Strixhaven.
I highly doubt that to be the case, planeswalker are the face of magic now expect them in each and every set. Even Maro stated so in Blogatog a while ago. I also think the 4th planeswalker was a side effect of MDFC adding an additionnal sheet to printing.

That they are "the face of Magic," is likely part of why people think there might not be.

I agree. Even something in between, like each deck being based on a specific plane rather than all the decks would be preferable. I want more Lorwyn and Alara and Shandalar and and and.
so looks like old style (random planes) is still in the design of decks
Was there any doubt? They outright stated so the first time they did plane-specific commander decks - and by having both kinds of product they can bloat their output even more!

Heck, every day I wake up, I don't go out and kill people - and I'm rewarded by not having legions of enemies! Amazing how that works.
Although ninjas are experts of camouflage and concealment, they are actually horrible liars. This means that no matter where you are, you can shout out, “Are there any ninjas here?” and if there’s a ninja within earshot, he’ll be compelled to respond.
I mean they tied the commander decks to sets with color factions that commander players had been wanting to see more love for (wedges and enemy), don't think this is gonna be the default model for the commander decks going forward.

Yeah, there was doubt. When was the last time we have a traditional Commander deck that wasn't tied down thematically to one plane? I'm concerned they'll rely on Commander Legends-like products for plane diversity and plane-lock Commander decks.

And so, considering the DND set has plane-locked Commander decks, it's been 2 years. Yeah, there's doubt on my end.
And as been stated these are likely gonna be the starter decks that replaced the pw starter decks, its a separate thing.

He was referring to sets in Magic the Gathering settings. In D&D Planar travel works vastly different then in MtG, It's far more common and not restricted to Planeswalkers. There are no sparks, because in D&D there is no blind eternities in the Great Wheel Axis cosmology. Heck nearly everyone's soul moves between planes in D&D before and after death at least.
Plus the Forgotten Realms has its own face characters, piles of them, so it doesn't need Planeswalkers to act as the face of the set. Drizxt, Elminster Fariah, Mehan, Everis Cale, Volo, Minsc & Boo, Azoth, Dragonbait, Artus Cimber, Szazz Tam, Fzoul, Obould, Mirt, ect...
So Planeswalkers don't make sense in this qnd having them in will feel forced.
If I'm wrong, then maybe Nezram World Walker will get a planeswalker card. I think its more likely Planeswalkers get replaced by a new card type for D&D sets (possible other sets as well, Planeswalkers make even less sense in Universes Beyond sets).
There are 9 standard legal planeswalkers in just the last 2 sets, 5 in Strxhaven alone (yes two shsre a card, but they are seperate characters). Its unlikely its unrelated to the possiblity of the AFR set having no planeswalkers. The AFR set is not MtG canon (although WotC is leaving the door open to retroactively changing that).
People had been complaining for years that the commander deck themes were starting to lose focus, with a fair amount of pessimism that WotC was running out of novel design space. Tying theme to the release of accompanying sets has proven to be both an elegant and organic solution, if not an inevitable one.

The D&D AFR set seems to have nothing in common with Core sets except for the Summer slot and the fact the the Standard Rotation is named after it (Last Standard Rotation was called Core 2021 Standard & included Throne of Eldraine, Theros Beyond Death, Ikoria & Core 2021, Forgotten Realms Standard has Zendikar, Kaldheim,Strixhaven/Arcavios, and AFR).
Unlike Core Sets AFR will have unique mechanics, a specific setting, few to no reprints, isn't MtG canon (it might be D&D canon), ect...
We are talking about 2 commander precons with maximal 3 new cards each right? Like the Kaldheim ones.
The problem I see with the thematic tied to the standard set is that there is no diversity in the decks. Old Commander precons were less structured but have given you a wider range of options. You had multiple legendaries with very different effects, flavor and tribes. Now both are tied to the main set. I kind of like the new precons more but I am more interested in Angel support and none of the new precons for commander has given me a new commander option because the plain where the main commander product was set were non-Angel worlds. With the old commander precons there were at least something new. (Well the boros precons this year has a new angel creature that could make it.) Kaldheim could have been amazing but was not chosen to be the set with the main commander precons.
The old precons didn't even give more options but I had more hope to get something. Now I just need to look into the spoilers of the main set and I already know that there will be nothing exciting for me. Apart of maybe some spells to help white out.
Huh. I wonder what the themes of these decks would be. The only obvious one that stands out to me would be Adventurer's VS Monsters, and would work best if they only released 2 decks. I supposed they could do 5 and focus on like, the primary classes in like 2 color pairs, but I feel like it is important to show off the monsters.
Also, this seems like a great time to reintroduce Archenemy to the game; as it has a similar vibe to DM vs PCs. My friends and I used to play Archenemy Commander, which was really fun!

The Strixhaven decks take the place of Commander 2021 just like the Ikoria decks took the place of Commander 2020.
