The new cards are all pretty cool and unique, which I can really appreciate. They are dedicated to the deck's theme and look like fun and strong cards (although maybe not competitive, but that's okay. I'm more in it for the casual gameplay anyway.) Kinda sad they misprinted Zaffai's name in the text box, but I guess that gives it some weird collector value?
Out of the new cards, I think Veyran and the octopus entices me the most along with the reusable Suspend cards (which I always thought were interesting from the Time Spiral Block).
^^ It's interesting that the color combo known for spell slinging is the least exciting color combo in Strixhaven // Commander 21
But Muse Vortex is interesting. Not a bad way to refill your hand at all.
Shame that the reprint value is in such stark contrast to the Lorehold deck.
I mean, I like the Prismari. But it’s probably because it’s already known for this that it’s not quite as novel. The others, especially WR, really went more out there.
Muse Vortex and Elementalist's Palette are both just silly in Mizzix X-spell decks.
The Vortex is a weird Stroke of Genius that still lets you play a massive x-spell for free.
"Cast for x=12, Blaze you for 12, and put 7 more burn spells into my hand. Your go!"
If you really wanna do that, then just play Epic Experiment that is 100x more efficent, not a much weaker and watered down version lol.
Also, you totally misread the card. Vortex do nothing for X-costed spells because you cast it without paying the mana cost, which means you can't choose any value for X, and that will always be zero in those cases.
Same issue with Epic Experiment, but at least the last one is exciting for real if you wanna just chain in the same turn non-x burn spells (or other insane stuff like extra turns, storm spells etc).

Muse Vortex lets you put the non-casted cards in hand, which is friendlier to X-spells than just casting them for free. If you play a lot of X-spells in your deck, Epic Experiment might end up being less effective.

He said that he could use Blaze for 12 while casting Vortex and I replied that thats the wrong use of the card and that Epic does the same job but better.
None of the cards are friendly to X spells. If your deck is full of X-spells both Vortex and Epic are inefficent options for you. At this point even any "draw X cards" is better.

I'll admit to misreading the card, but this IS still slightly more efficient than you might think. It won't let you deal play an x-spell with the primary effect, very true, but playing a non x-spell for free and then loading up a decent amount of additional x-spells into your hand isn't bad at all.
I'd say that it's definitely better than Epic Experiment in an x-spell deck. Whether or not it's better than something like Stroke of Genius is debatable. Stroke could just as likely draw you a bunch of lands as useful spells, but this is almost guaranteed to draw at least SOME gas for you.
There's already talk in the competitive community about magecraft + Chain of Smog breaking the game, hence my theory that Chain of Smog may soon be functionally errata'd to be in line with the demonstrate text.
Yeah, that card jumped extremely in value some days back due to it being an insta-kill with Professor Onyx. I'm amused I bought a foil some years back for the hefty price of 12 Euro-cents, and now it's like a €40 card (the foil)...
Muse Vortex is actually stronger than I thought. Not only do you did through your deck and get to cast a spell for "free", your other instants and sorceress go into your hand! So this is like a weird draw spell? 🤔
it's fine I think, nowhere near as good as the Boros one,
...and when did we think we'd ever be seeing THAT said about any commander deck ever? I'm happy to see it!
I like how Prismari got two suspend cards, one in each color, and Lorehold got two landcyclers. I'm betting each deck will get dual cards with a different mechanic.
I loved the Boros deck but not feeling this one at all, not even the Octopus. I find the Instant/Sorcery focus of Izzet to be such an uninspired, exhausted design space. I liked when cards like Keranos took those colors to new places. This could have been more about quick resources and control or something. Sea monster decks care more about creature cards than spells.
