How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I definitely don't see a whole ton of Harry Potter, I see the same basic tropes and university window dressing Rowling drew on. The sweet little girl who is smarter than her older peers and very excited to learn predates coed schools being the norm. The thing with looking at this stuff and seeing Harry Potter is that Rowling really had very few new ideas. Her characters were charming and really carried it, and a few of the details were nice, but as someone who absolutely loves those books even now and has been reading them since i was a child, she really didn't have hardly any ideas that were original even then.
Agreed. Rowling created an entertaining story, but she did it by drawing from a lot of other sources/inspirations. Some are very obvious (three-headed dog guarding passage that can be lulled to sleep with music = Orpheus and Cerberus), while others have a little more creative twist to them. But her world-building isn't the most original and doesn't hold up under scrutiny. It contains a lot of tropes that were tropes before she wrote her series. Doesn't make her story less enjoyable, but people need to be more well-read if they think Harry Potter was the genesis for these things.
didnt they say no H.P. stuff ? the stadium looks kinda "inspired" by that
Yes Maro said it wasn't HP inspired but you can see card after card they had planned for crossover versions, so he is blowing smoke. This card is the Quiddich Pitch, the new UG Prodigal Student is Hermione, Codie is the Sorting Hat and there are a slew of others. Its obvious it was designed with HP in mind then they didn't get (or didn't want) to get the property rights for those.
Almost every magic school in fiction (heck, most real-life colleges) has a stadium, Codie and the Sorting Hat are both supposed to be mascots, and Zimone is one of the oldest tropes around. Please, please read more than just Harry Potter.
I have and that's why I know many cards are a blatant copy.

You're missing the point. Are these three UNIQUE to Harry Potter? No. Hell, these aren't unique to the genre. These are also all general school tropes (specifically college), even outside of fiction.

No I am not, I think you are missing MY point that several of these cards are VERY close to HP counterparts and look to be designed for a re-skin by WotC. Tell me Zimone and Hermione aren't essentially the same name and same character. Yes the tropes have been around for an eternity. But WotC lovers saying there is NO connection or NO inspiration is flat out wrong. Rose colored glasses make everything look like a rose.
On top of that, I'm still going to purchase product from this set. But I'm not pretending that there wasn't a tie in from HP specifically designed for this set. You will never convince me otherwise with what I see with my OWN EYES. Don't bother trying and don't worry about me reading any more of your responses from the bully pulpit, as I won't.

People have been memeing Strixhaven as the "HP ripoff set" from the point the name and tagline got spoiled, before we saw anything. You always see what you want to see. I mean, of course the influence is going to be there because of HPs huge cultural status, but so far I don't really see 1:1 plants unless you count really broad tropes like "genius student" and "university sports teams."
Also, the whole "there absolutely was a HP tie in at some point that they had to scrap" argument feels like something on the level of Mew being under the truck near SS Anne. It's based on nothing more than the perception of Wizards as a "SJW company" by some and Rowling's recent fall from grace.

Right? When I first read that there were fractal tokens in this set, I was like "wow, that's some crazy stuff, can't wait to see it..." But turns out "fractals" are just glowy ghost animals. Kind of disappointing.
Best match I've found for that stadium so far is the Athens Olympic stadium.
There was a Hearthstone expansion released last year that had, variously, a star student card, a powerful necromancer posing as a school employee, cross-class (basically hybrid) cards, a "spells matter" theme, a secret cult, and a cycle of "studies" that get you a card from outside the game. Now, the release timeline makes it extremely unlikely that Wizards copied this, but it's just as easy to find "suspicious" parallels there as to Harry Potter. Common genre tropes plus a couple coincidences does look a lot like copying, but doesn't prove anything.

I find the theory that Strixhaven was supposed to be a Harry Potter Tie-in to be so strange. If the theory is that the set was designed with HP in mind but then they didn't secure the license and had to change the flavor, there seems to be problems with it. This is just my opinion, but the flavor seems pretty extensive to be something slapped together to salvage an already designed set. And the big issue for me is that the set does not seem like it would mechanically fit with HP. 5 enemy colored factions doesn't fit into a world with the four Hogwarts houses, lots of the mechanics on the cards really would be hard to concept in the HP world, and if it were designed as a top-down HP set then I feel like there'd be a lot more direct examples that people could point to.
I'd really like to know what support these people have for the theory beyond "This character fits the same trope as Hermione" and "This magic school ALSO has team sports" because I really feel like I must be missing something..

I think you give them too much credit. I figured it was just random leftover art from Battlebond they digitally tweaked (or not) and just threw in the set and probably called it a day.
Oof, reading is hard. They didn't say it wasn't inspired by HP, they said it wasn't "just a reskinning of any one version of [the magical school genre]." Who cares if some of the elements are similar to HP? Rowling isn't making a dime here, and that's all that matters.

As far as I can tell, the support is "I want it to be true" and confirmation bias. There's way more evidence that this is a cohesive, independent product that takes inspiration from some of the same sources as Hogwarts than that there was some sort of deal that fell through.
I honestly see nothing noteworthy in terms of HP stuff. Mostly it reads like... well, school. If they really wanted it to feel like HP then everyone wearing the same uniform with a minor denotation of faction and carrying wands/broomsticks/owls everywhere would kind of be a must, but it has none of that. And even those aren't really original to HP.
