Before previews for Strixhaven officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.
First up, here are some things you can expect:
• a white card with the rules text “draw three cards”
• a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them
• a card featuring Paulo Vito Damo da Rosa’s likeness (for winning the World Championship)
• a spell with three X’s in its mana cost
• introduction of a new evergreen keyword
• a red sorcery that you can have as many copies in your deck as you want
• a futureshifted card (appearing for the first time in a premier set other than Future Sight)
• an MDFC with the same card type on both sides that hasn’t been printed before
• a card sharing something never shared before
• a cycle of enemy dual lands finishing off a ten-card cycle
Here are some snippets from rules text that appear in the set:
• “Search your library and graveyard for up to four creature cards with different names”
• “Otherwise, put a study counter on it.”
• “Whenever a permanent entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability to trigger”
• “untap each creature you control, then tap any number of creatures you control”
• “Pay 10 life:”
• “Repeat this process six more times.”
• “Pests, Bats, Insects, Snakes, and Spiders”
• “Each mode must target a different player.”
• “Whenever an opponent activates an ability that isn’t a mana ability”
• “where X is the number of cards in your library”
And finally, here are some creature type lines from the set:
• Creature – Turtle Druid
• Creature – Bird Warlock
• Creature – Frog Wizard
• Creature – Spirit Dwarf
• Creature – Troll Druid
• Creature – Eye Bat
• Legendary Creature – Vampire Warlock
• Legendary Creature – Orc Shaman
• Legendary Creature – Dryad Druid
• Legendary Artifact Creature – Construct
Find out the answers to (some) of these clues and other Strixhaven news on March 25th at 9:00 AM PT. Tune in either on twitch.tv/Magic or on our official YouTube channel.
I wonder if the MDFC will be planeswalkers, with one side being Rowan and the other side being Will. So far, with the exception of a lone planeswalker deck Rowan, they've always been together via partner or on the same card.
Can someone give me examples? I have no clue what he's talking about. All I can think of is types.
Maro if it’s not the tango/battle lands I will smack you in the face I have been waiting forever for the enemies of those. but Bad fetches (MIR), Reveal lands(SOI), or Bicycle lands (AKH) are acceptable too.
Rules text
Dang maro that’s gonna be in every B EDH deck easily (I’m next to certain it’s a black spell)
Likely the third card that gets “study” counters the other 2 are pretty hard to reprint
Either a stax version or group hug version of or maybe just Yarok, the Desecrated but on a different card and name it will be one.
That’s interesting that will be a nasty surprise for attackers if instant I wonder what benefit you get from tapping them back?
Will se what happens with this if the “pay 10 life” is for something busted like Griselbrand forget about edh
This could be anything of what this dwarf will do. maybe kaldheim cards will give us a clue?
A troll that gonna be involved with lands/mana producing what will it do?
YAY EYE NUMBER FOUR! with the bat type include I think “eye bats” are a thing in D&D so probably a prep.
Logically the vampire is probably in Literature (Orzhov).
No ally colors at all in the set from earlier so 0% chance the orc is gruul so maybe izzet based on the girl from arts house
That’s interesting a Dryad Druid probably Biology
I would say are praetor made it but it would have gotten “phyrexian” type so probably colorless let’s see if this can trump Kozilek, the Great Distortion as a colorless commander.
Now to explain why I think
“Whenever an opponent activates an ability that isn’t a mana ability”
is probably Jin-Gitaxa/Phyrexian praetor.
The trend continued with vorinclex 2.0 opponents get a huge Con when you get a massive benefit
And text version should demonstrate that I think it will be
“Whenever you you activate an ability that isn’t a mana ability it copy it”
“Whenever an opponent activates an ability that isn’t a mana ability counter that ability unless they pay X where X is the Activation cost.”
Splitting the "wizard" creature type into Wizard, Warlock, Shaman, Druid ; is hurting tribal in the long run.
Well you end up with more creature types and more tribes, but each tribe is weaker in doing so.
Same deal that happened to Soldier, Warrior, Knight, Berserker, and all the other "Fighter" types (calling all of them "Warrior" would benefit the tribe as it has more matches).
----
Tribal gets quite watered-down in that regard at least for job classes.
Doesnt help that we split the more generic Elf, Goblin and so on also in different types (which is more a thing because of plane hopping), introducing more specific types like Dwarf, Gremlin.
At least "human" is a thing more often than not ... (and even here we get way more non-human zoo creatures in all colors and "humanoid" other races that again hurt the tribal types as a whole by introducing just way too many groups).
----
Would appreciate a more streamlined creature type set instead of trying to place gimmicks all over the place just for the sake of having a weird creature type combination.
Pests? That looks like a weird creature type, more like a batching term for the following types, but that way it wouldn't make sense as written. Wonder why they felt the need to introduce it...

“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"

Wizard, Knight, and Warrior already have quite a bit of support; too much more would be superfluous, while giving attention to the other tribes increases their individual viability.
• a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them
why them? We know The twins are the MDFC teaser so it can't be them.
Also could just be gender neutral. IIRC, the wanderer's pronouns are They/Them ...
Despite being grammatically incorrect, it is socially OK to ask to be referred to as they/them instead of a gendered pronoun, so I don't think that gives us a ton to work with.

This, very much. They / them are used when you don't know the gender of a particular individual - and it's not 'grammatically incorrect.' Did you also notice that the article is singular?
• a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them
Undercover Liliana, Masked Estrid, Six-less Wrenn or The Wanderer are the most likely options here. Shapeshifted Oko is a possibility but it would be weird to see both the Kenriths and Oko sharing a set again so soon.
EDIT: Just realized this could also possibly mean a "pre-spark version of a PW". I know it would look a bit woozy but it's canonical that supplemental sets don't follow the normal MtG continuity, kinda like the Kenriths appeared in Battlebond despite their sparks igniting in Eldraine. We could theoretically see pre-spark Wrenn, for example - funny how Wrenn would perfectly fit the "Legendary Creature - Dryad Druid" description too.
• a card sharing something never shared before
I'm going assume that by "sharing" MaRo means "distributing some kind of quality between cards", kinda like what Odric, Lunarch Marshal does. Or it could be "sharing" in a game mechanic sense, like "all players share graveyards" or something like that. Still an interesting concept.
• “untap each creature you control, then tap any number of creatures you control”
This probably hints at a tapping/untapping mechanic in the set. Q is very unlikely, so maybe the return of Inspired? It has a flavor that fits Strixhaven, though I'm not sure which school it would fit into. Probably UR/Prismari, as Inspired does evokes the idea of both artistry and motion, while U is the main color of tapping/untapping while R is the main color of attacking which also triggers Inspired.

Both clues could conceivably refer to the same card, right?
But, I do agree it's intended to not specify information about the planeswalker. MtG has been using "they" for unspecified genders for a while now on cards, so MaRo is surely accustomed to doing so.
Some other possibilities:
The Wanderer is revealed
Aminatou (/whoever from Commander products) who can't be your commander
Angrath, Loving Father
Jace learns some green magic
Kasmina as a mythic rare

Garruk (or Vivien) as a Hagrid stand-in might be cute.
Kinda hoping that myself but why do I suspect something like 2R deal one damage to target permanent.
• Legendary Artifact Creature – Construct This one tickles my personal wishes in a Pioneer Construct deck I run at times.

Forgot about Wrenn and Six - wasn't there some Wrenn and Six-ish art released already?
Any guesses on the new evergreen keyword? Follow up questions on the blog clarified that it is an existing ability, but it has never been keyworded before. They've been using "cannot be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less" a lot lately, but that seems like an odd ability to see a lot of in a school-focused set.
Please, mill me. Mill my important cards. Mill my lands. Mill it all. Because I will still deal 20 damage before you can mill 45 cards most every time.

basicly Illusionist's Bracers for you and for opponents stifle variant of Linvala, Keeper of Silence unless they pay a fee.
That's "draws", not "draw". You might be somewhat right though: "You and that player/opponent each draw three cards".
I'm hoping for the completion of the Battle lands cycle. (Or the slow fetches, but those aren't likely in a Standard set.)

Legendary Creature – Vampire Warlock
Legendary Creature – Orc Shaman
Legendary Creature – Dryad Druid
I think the answer was right in front of are eyes for these
Legendary Creature – Orc Shaman
Legendary Creature – Vampire Warlock
Legendary Creature – Dryad Druid
so I was probably right on the nose that these are the best students of each house and each are a legendary creature
so which means we can say this
Legendary Creature - Human wizard
Legendary Creature - Elephant (cleric?)
