weird that they "updated" the art of Saffi and not Radha's one

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
@ilovesaprolings Probably the same reason they would change the art on any female character in current MTG: too spicified/damsel in distress-y. Can't show females running away from anything, now can we? Females can only be strong and not show any weakness whatsoever, just like in real life. Also butt.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.

Saffi's original art is the only art of a legendary creature to be running away from the viewer. Even Norin the Wary is still cautiously moving forward. The original art was also very specific to Time Spiral - it's her running through a portal only to end up timeshifted - or whatever the flavor of the block was - This new art is far more eternal, and makes sense for a legendary creature. It also fits the original flavor more. In the goyf flavor text, it's Saffi telling Hans to run, it makes little sense why Saffi is the one depicted running in her art. This new art also fits the card's flavor better - she's sacrificing herself to give her brother time to run away.

I guess the centuries of women being depicted as the weaker-thans only able to be saved by a male aren't enough for you eh? You feeling insecure about women being depicted in a strong, commanding fashion bruh? Not cool with an identified male being seen as the one running away?
Anyway, this is decent artwork. Really captures what she's about and shows she won't go down without swinging as hard as she can to ensure the safety of her friend brother. I want to see that in foil above all else
Saffi's new art fits the card's activated ability, but it doesn't make sense for the flavor text. Wizards should have dropped or changed the flavor text.

I remember bringing this up back in the day and my entire play group was like "lol but butt"
I really like the art change here, and its way more fitting
Urza's Factory is reprinted! With it comes its elusive and yet non-existant Assembly-Worker Token. Who's a happy panda? I'm a happy panda!! Will finally have that token to go in my Confusion in the Ranks deck

Nothing of what you wrote here is even remotely in my post, explicitly or otherwise. In fact, if anything what you implied from it proves exactly my point. Whenever this issue comes up people like to complain about women being being depicted as weaker/sexualized, etc in art for centuries upon centuries. Sure, but this is MTG we're talking about, not Prhyne Before the Aeropagus or the Abduction of the Sabines. Get on with the times for God's sake. Please show me the years and years of "negative female depiction" in MTG that people still feel we need vindication for. Sure, there was Elvish Ranger way back in like the first 5 years of Magic. It's been like, what, 25+ years and people still complain of "constant females in chainmail bikinis", etc. What media are you even watching anyway, that you see this everywhere? Apart from the aforementioned card, in my 27 years of life I've never seen a chainmail bikini or enough damsels in distress to really feel this is a stereotype that's still being pushed. Quite the opposite in fact. Please be aware that now there are people young enough to never have seen Red Sonja (and from what I know, she's not a weak character anyway). As for the flavor reasons behind the depiction of Saffi, I agree, but it will always be nerd talk before anything else. To give a random example, you can give whatever in-world lore explanation of why, say, Gandalf came back from the dead in LOTR, but it will always come down to Tolkien wanting to give a Christian message of God's providence, lore reasons and explanations will always be subordinated to ideology and politics.
And I do like the illustration, it's good, I was just responding to another post with my theory of why it was changed.

Haha, I just had a look at a big version of the original Saffi artwork. "lol butt" is right... That really takes my out of the fantasy setting is she wearing 80s spandex or what?
Like the new artwork with Hans running away in the background, but, yes, the flavor text is completely out of place now. How about just:

Most cards in Magic depict people performing heroic acts or doing magic. That's the nature of the game. You won't find that many pictures of men "showing weakness" either.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I think the new art pairs up better with the Hans art, and it's nice to have Hans show up in her art, but the old art has better composition and is nicer to look at overall. I think it makes sense for Saffi to be running from a Lhurgoyf. I think that Saffi being sacrificed doesn't necessarily have to mean she tried to fight the Lhurgoyf off with a dagger, maybe they just could have Delta Splitted.
I think as far as "political" angles of this thread go, women have the right to be strong, which means they also have the freedom to be weak, or wear boob armor, if they want to. And the right to run from Lhurgoyfs, I think, too. Maybe in this version of "Ach! Hans, Run!" the Lhurgoyf is only a 1/2. We've all run from 20/20 Mortivores in multiplayer games though, there's no shame in it. I don't think the art was updated for any sexualized reasons because as Ilovesaprolings pointed out, Radha's art hasn't been changed. We've all noticed how loose Radha's fly is. You can see her, uh, fuzz. Honestly I think they just wanted to get Hans in there, because he's fun.

EDIT: This art's better anyways. It tells the full story: Hans running away in the background, and Saffi cornered by the shadow of the Lhurgoyf.
Yeah this art fits way better with the Hans they printed, only real issue is not the flavor text does not match what's happening. I understand them wanting to keep the cards as they were in the original set but there's a real disconnect with the card now.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

Hans Eriksson and Saffi Eriksdotter
it's with "son" and "dotter" so minus the two and you get "Eriks"
so who is Erik?
Their father.
