There’s no way to tell this without hurting or super large anger so I will rip the bandaid off
They starting something new “universe beyond” which are cross over sets starting with lord of the rings and warhammer 40K, lord of the rings is a set and the warhammer 40k are commander decks
good news but “mtg universe” sets are Basicly supplament sets by default (which Basicly means not standard legal) and it’s not limited time like the worst secret lair ever which incredible became the best selling one
bad news is still eternal legal
I hope the commander committe makes separate formats (mtg universe only, and mtg cards with “universe beyond”)
and D&D is not part of this only stuff not made by wizards will enter this and ofcoarse yes the triangle holo seal is what’s being used for these sets
LotR is getting an entire set, so there's no way it's like Godzilla. You will now regularly be playing Commander games against Gandalf and Bilbo. Bummer.

How dare you sir! It is not Bilbo, Bummer! It is Dildo Bugger and the great Goodgulf Greyteeth master of the mystery magic of Legerdemain!
But in all seriousness I wish they didn't make straight sets of alternate products but 'Magic' versions of it. For example a pokemon themed magic set that didn't have actual pokemon but played on the idea of what would pokemon look or play like in MTG (Obviously it would be a Level-up set). I couldn't care less if there was a John Wayne magic card but I would love a wild west themed magic set. I can't remember but there was a tcg around wild west with black magic voodoo, deadlands or something.

Oath of the Gatewatch in a nutshell;
"Earth!" shouts Nissa
"Fire!" shouts Chandra
"Wind!" shouts Jace
"Water!" shouts Kiora
"Heart!" shouts Gideon
"Go Multiverse!" shouts everyone combined
"By your powers combined, I am Captain Multiverse!" shouts Captain Multiverse
Honestly it makes sense that D&D has more influence in MTG given that they share a very similar history; I'm surprised they haven't gone this route before but I guess it wasn't "Cool" to be a D&D player at that time.

Well this better be like Godzilla and not like Walking Dead.
That’s about where I am with this. Wizards reporting willingness to “reprint” cards with a different name and say that they are the same card on Gatherer for deck building restrictions was annoying enough when it was just a secret lair. Scaling up that problem to a full set would be a serious problem.
I mean, I doubt that every single card will cause reprint problems. Most non-legendary cards probably won’t have reprint problems (it’s not like the Tolkien estate owns the words “shire” or “ranger”) and wizards will hopefully be wise enough to make hobbits kithkin and to name lands in a way that gives at least some level of plausible deniability (other than maybe a common ETB land cycle). If the set still contains around 20 legends, though, that would be a bit rough.
Actually, I would be satisfied if wizards accompanied the set with Secret Lairs showing the non-copyrighted versions of the legends so that a version of the cards that wizards could potentially reprint is seen and known from the start and players who don’t like the crossover have a version of the card that they wouldn’t object to if one of those legends ends up being powerful.
Like the walking dead, i wont be buying any of that product. **** em.
assuming the lord of the rings cross over is a full walking dead style set: the thing that gets me too is like... these are forced on you. if they're strong cards you're going to see them, you have no choice. if they do an entire set of lord of the rings, you're stuck. if you don't support this decision, and you don't want your immersion factor broken, if you'd rather speak with your wallet... now you're out until bare minimum the set rotates.
they'll be all over standard, and if you want to participate because its an entire set you WILL have to buy in. so now you get to sit out of standard for like 2 years. you won't be drafting this set if you don't support the idea, you won't be going to prerelease events, limited events, nothing. if anything is strong (and something will be) you'll also see it pop up in other formats, repeatedly. arena also ends up being majorly out since all it is is standard sets.
so now you're forced to make a choice. support this with your wallet like it or not if you want to keep playing... or don't play.
and then on top of that you might sit down for a game and have someone slap down bilbo baggins and gandalf with their great unclean one and michone. at a certain point you're not even playing magic any more, and you had no say in it.
magic's lore and history is far too rich to need to blend it with other properties. if wotc can't write a story any more, thats a major problem and resources need to be spent on fixing that, not stealing from another unrelated property to muddy up their existing one.
part of magic is its story and flavor.
once you start down this path all of that becomes meaningless. why even have art on cards, or anything flavorful at all.
i think thats all a big part of why you don't see that kind of blending with other long time properties. lord of the rings is its own miniatures game, its not jammed into 40k. better to include nods and references to other things over straight up including them because all you do is make a mess.
We knew there was going to be a D&D crossover: Its the summer set in place of Core 2022.
40K would far more likely be some kind of Secret Lair or Ponies the Galloping type product, and there is no news other that "we heard this was happening" so its basically a rumor at this point.
If making a 40k set is the only way for wizard for making a sci-fi set, so be it. I want my tyranid tokens.

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
The main takeaway there is it's NOT gonna be like Godzilla, and will be mechanically unique.
"Finally, fans who have seen us try out a variety of treatments for cards featuring characters from other universes might wonder if we're utilizing the treatment from the Ikoria Godzilla cards—existing Magic cards skinned with the alternate universe—or the treatment used for The Walking Dead—alternate universe cards that stand on their own. The answer is "both," but often we'll default to letting these cards stand on their own. We may find charming opportunities to do the reskinned versions of existing cards and will continue to balance between the two as we move forward."
"Letting these cards stand on their own" = mechanically unique. And since it's called out that the cards won't be standard legal, they will 100% be eternal legal. Hope you enjoy playing your legacy storm deck against space marine aggro.

Yes, but it also means that, for instance, the 40K Commander set mentioned in the article will be available at LGSs and normal channels for extended periods, not short term buy-it-or-miss-it like Walking Dead was.
This is such a bummer and is really turning me off to Magic in general. I don't want to see Gandalf and space marines and all the other cringe IPs they can make a buck off of in Commander and Legacy. Magic isn't going to be the same anymore if it's just going to be like Funko Pops

Protection from reason (Decadent_Creed can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by reason.)
I have very mixed feelings on these. Likely gonna think things over and see things go first since this could be great for magic or ruin it.

"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I was fine with the godzilla crossovers, even though I personally don't like seeing them. Secret Lairs as crossovers also don't bother me, as I know I'd rarely see them, and nothing that was printed in WD was busted. In fact, I was really hoping they'd keep it to secret lairs for all crossovers.
Having sets or commander blocks around these (and I know the DnD set was announced forever ago) are just... They're replacing opportunities to print materials distinct to the lore of MTG. It just feels like Hasbro is trying to open as many cash cows through MTG without any interest in respecting MTG's lore, history, and the wants of its older players (though I'm sure they assume these cross promotions will generate more than enough new players that they can ignore complaints). And why wouldn't they? Corporations exist to generate profit, and clearly demand is meeting the crazy supply they're pushing out.
Maybe I'm just fatigued by MTG. There is always an announcement of something new every minute, an oversaturation of materials to the point where it's difficult to even reflect on the faults of a previous set or recent WOTC/Hasbro decisions and overall game impacts, and maybe I'm just now having a headache from it.
Seems like Magic is just gonna become like that old Marvel/Image/DC game Overpower.
They say these won't be Standard legal, as if that wasn't already a "D'uh!" - but I just hope these cards aren't good enough to sneak into Legacy or be prevalent in EDH. (I assume they won't be Modern Legal, like the Walking Dead cards.)
