There was a time in Magic when a one pip red bear with first strike alone was enough to justify a Rare printing...
Exactly. The spoiled kids of today have never had the pleasure (or more accurately, experience) of opening chaoslace as their rare, or having to play with a gray ogre or hurloon minotaur in their decks in the absence of more summons! Honestly, if I was thirteen again and opened this back then I'd be thrilled!
I opened a lot of Hurloon Minotaurs and Gray Ogres back in the day and thought they were trash then as well. Still sitting in a bulk box 27 years and counting.
Just don’t buy the product and go for singles.
I buy both, I just don't like settling for draft chaff in the rare slot. This card will see ZERO play outside draft, Standard and Commander.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.

Ahh, the classic "Outside the 3 most popular formats, this will never see play" argument. 90% of magic rares don't see play in formats other than those, and yet... that's fine, cause those formats are where a solid 90% of magic is played (among magic that's played in a format, as opposed to kitchen table, which dwarfs all the rest).

My feeling is that in any given year (not set, year) it's reasonable to expect 10 to 15 cards to break through into Modern. The numbers for the older formats are smaller. Sometimes these cards behave like Hollow One and define a new deck using old parts. Other times they are utility cards like Fatal Push and slot into a variety of decks. Across 1200 cards that's 1 to 2 percent. Clearly not all cards are going to make that threshold, that doesn't make them necessarily bad cards, just not the top 1%. This is a perfectly fine card for rare. ( I keep in thinking that Zendikar 2 may have been an exception but I'm not convinced it even breaks that threshold).

If that's your standard then there's really no discussion to be had. Not every card is going to see play across every format and you're just gonna have to live with that.

So who wants to pre-buy these off me for 5 bucks a pop? Should be a "steal" for that price for such a strong playable card right?
4x in a R/G midrange deck sounds good to me. Not sure why you're trying to be a jerk about it.
The card is fine. Sure it's not the next Dark Confidant or Tarmogoyf, but it's a solid 2 drop in red. Like others have said, I remember when a 2/2 with first strike for 2 mana would have been a strong card. I think this will find a home.
I buy both, I just don't like settling for draft chaff in the rare slot. This card will see ZERO play outside draft, Standard and Commander.
I fundamentally do not understand the complaints you raise against this card on multiple levels.
To acknowledge your central point, I will gladly agree that this card probably won’t break $1 (or at least not for long) when prices stabilize and any pack with this card will likely be lost money for the buyer. On this point, I feel that we are in agreement.
With that said, it seems that part of your dislike for the card has nothing to do with this specific card and more to do with your views on the existence of chaff rares and your (perhaps informed) opinions regarding your own luck.
Your multiple statements about how this will inevitably be the card you open multiple copies of could be projected back to cards like Yasharn in Zendikar, Skycat Sovereign in Ikoria, Elspeth Conquers Death in Theros... it just goes on and on.
You acknowledge that this type of card will probably see some level of play in the three biggest formats played (limited, standard, and commander) but you seem angry that a card that lacks the clout to be worth the price of a pack would be the rare of a pack... even though that is how magic has virtually always worked. Like, when was the last set that didn’t have chaff rares to statistically “balance out” the hits?
I have no right to force you to like this card but bringing up a complaint about a card that has little to nothing to do with the card itself seems odd.
So who wants to pre-buy these off me for 5 bucks a pop? Should be a "steal" for that price for such a strong playable card right?
Seriously, what's your issue with this card? It's standard playable card, nothing more. No one is expecting this to be the next Goblin Guide, but where it is here in Standard it seems fine.
I have every right to voice my displeasure. So no, I don't have to like it or tolerate it if I don't want to. We agree to disagree and move on.
I understand that, I complain about stuff all the time in Magic to an almost worrying degree and you and me have even agreed fully as we complained about the same thing, but you have to pick your battles and focusing so hard on this particular card seems odd. At least something like Jeweled Lotus there was reason to complain about it, but this is just an inoffensive adequate red rare in a Standard set. I don't get it.
Honestly such a baffling take. Every card, not even Rare/Mythic Rare, can’t be good enough to break into eternal formats outside of Commander, and even every one of those rarities still really shouldn’t be good enough to see play in that. That doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Not completely terrible, might see play in standard, but thats basically about it too.
----
Would be shocked if this card is a 2$+ card at all, its the kind of card that wins games in your sealed pool and then its gone in your trading binder forever.
I buy both, I just don't like settling for draft chaff in the rare slot. This card will see ZERO play outside draft, Standard and Commander.

You do have that right, but it's odd considering how much conversation you've been having about a deck that runs Charix, the Raging Isle in Pioneer. This card will certainly be more useful that Charix. Charix is not only $0.49USD, but it's also objectively mediocre most everywhere.
None of you will change my mind, it is set. You won't do it so don't bother. Stop trying to force your views onto me. I'm not doing that to any of you, just stating my own opinion of which I am entitled to. We agree to disagree and move on. This will be my last post on this subject. Lets see if the rest of you can let it go, I bet not.

There's a gulf of difference between "This card is not garbage" and "This card is a constructed staple". Nobody knows yet how much worth it'll be. Historically people, especially players, are garbage at predicting the power level of previewed cards. People tend to judge them based on the current meta. But the card won't be played in the current meta. It will be played in the meta including the rest of Kaldheim, which may or may not provide suitable support for this card.
To flip your own argument around, why not sell the copies you open of this card for 10 cents? Clearly such a terrible card is worth nothing more. But that's not what you suggested, because you're actually unsure of its worth yourself. You were just trying an intimidation tactic to shut up the opposition in this argument by trying to make them look like hypocrites.
And as people have said, this card is extremely annoying to play against in limited, if not an outright bomb. Making this uncommon would have been a huge mistake. Your claim it should have been an uncommon underlines your lack of understanding of healthy limited formats.
How is this garbage for Constructed? It could very well be played in a Standard deck, a 2/2 first striker for 1R is on curve at least, and the ability can save you if you're getting land flooded. I don't think this is MD worthy, but it could be a pretty solid way to turn a grindy match around if you can pull off one activation, it's not the best but it merits some testing at least.
And people saying this could be uncommon...just imagine playing against the guy who drafted more than one, yay...
I have every right to voice my displeasure. So no, I don't have to like it or tolerate it if I don't want to. We agree to disagree and move on.
Of course you do, just as I and everyone else here can question and call BS, same as you do with us. Free speech is a ***** ain't it?
Anywho.
I've always found it frivolous to determine a card's potential based on a visual view rather than in practice. Sure in a vacuum it might not seem that great however most times cards that are seen as jank initially often over perform, and vice versa. Wait until you can playtest under the present meta before you make a solid judgement.

Yeah this is the attitude that allowed me to pick up 25 Tarmogoyfs at the Futuresite prerelease for $5 a pop. Under/over estimating a card before we actually get some testing time with it is rarely productive.
As for what I think. It's not screaming overly good at me, that being said I can certainly see the correct conditions in which this could generate a lot of value. It's very clearly meant more for standard than say Modern or Pioneer, not enough immediate impact on the board though we have also not seen what other boast cards there are in the set. There could be a few that are cheaper and dropping this after an attack in which your opponent evaluated you would not be able to trigger the boast only to have this sure up the difference in the cost could very well be back breaking. I think if we get something along the lines of Mirror entity or Shields of Velis Vel could really skew how we're evaluating this, and this would be the set to do that.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
Turn 1: Drop a mana dork and pray the dork survives
Turn 2: Dies to removal or is countered
Turn 3: If it survives it may have to chump block something big again dies to removal.
Turn 4: Go ahead and attack into an opponents creature probably bigger than a measly 2/2 if they are on creatures, tap out for 5 mana for a 5/5 flyer as you lose your 2/2 and pray a Ratchet Bomb or Blast Zone isn't on the battlefield.
I'm sorry this card is slow and bad in Constructed. It is WAY to conditional. You can try to convince me otherwise but unless there is something that boosts this card up it is a dragon only tiny niche constructed card. I don't draft so this will be the garbage constructed card I pull in droves if I buy boosters.
so..... you're playing a constructed deck against someone that's able to kill everything on earth without any tempo loss OR have a large enough threat by turn 3 you'd chumpblock with your 2/2 first striker?
damn... you must be playing a really broken format.
Yep I play Pioneer and the format will rip that card to shreds. (And so will Modern)
lol, the old "Dies to removal" argument.
my friend, this is a 2drop.
every 2 drop will die to removal.
the baseline is a 2/2 first striker for 2, which is not great but also not terrible.
if someone burns it, it's a 1 for 1, and you're fine... specially because more often than not, your opponent spent at least the same 2 mana as you to kill it.
if he sticks around long enough, he'll start making dragons.
the card isn't breaking any formats, but is certainly playable..... and I think might be playable in Pioneer depending on the synergies.
I feel like a berserker should have haste not first strike so it's kind of a flavor fail for me.
Worse than that - so far, of all the berserker cards leaked, I see absolutely no flavor consistency or through-line. Nothing to differentiate a berserker from a warrior. Inexplicably, the outlaw that cares about treasure coming on the heels of a rogue tribal set is a "berserker" too.
