For those that have seen the new Foil Etched cards, do you prefer them to regular foils? What are your thoughts on this foiling process? I hear they remain flat and do not curl. Is that true?
They look horrendous however. The video example of Prossh that they first teased looked like the art would remain largely "normal" compared to regular foils, while the border got most of the treatment. But in person, oof. They're grainy, completely washed out, and terrible visibility in most lighting.
Artifact masterpiece foiling remains the best out of the modern foil options imo.
In my opinion they look stunning, and they do remain flat. It is correct that in a certain angle they are hard to read but it's not so different than regular foils.
This new process opens up many possibilities for new premium cards. I'm glad they're tapping into new territories with printing processes as foil-etched foiling and the new spot UV in the Zendikar Rising's expeditions (the special glossy varnish on certain parts of the card).
I hope to see more of these in the future.
I think it looks great, although they are over-saturated quite a bit for most of the cards in this first print run. The possibilities for metalic-stylized foils in the future is great though. It's important to note that it's fairly difficult to really capture how it looks on camera vs seeing one close up with your own eyes. If you're unsure if you like them, order a 15cent cheapo one and see for yourself.
I ordered a Thrasios since this new version is cheaper at the moment. I hope I don’t regret it. I’ll post an update once I’ve had a chance to see it. I really wanted a non-foil printing of him sadly, which doesn’t appear to be promising any time soon.
Images thus far seem mixed. I’m not sure if it’s flash or just intense lighting or printing variability but some look nice while others look like coal with gravel inclusions. I prefer experimenting in the territory of secret rares from Yugioh or the cosmic foil from original Pokémon than what these seem to be.
I got a Derevi, Empyrial Tactician from a booster and I like most of it. The frame is shiny and glittery. The name-box and the Type-box looks like it is standing out (3d-like). Really nice. I think the picture is slightly worse. I don't know, how to describe it. Darker and more pixelly. The set Icon in the text-box is the ugliest thing in my opinion. I would like to see a white card with this printing method. I have a red one Krark, the Thumbless and that card looks really great. The picture looks alright and the set symbol doesn't seem to be that ugly.
Edit: They look way better in person (real life) than on pictures.
I pulled some in White, Blue and Gold. The white looks awful, the blue looks decent and the gold looks like there’s something wrong with it, even though I’m pretty sure there isn’t.
I’m not wild about this style and it really doesn’t look like that original video they posted.
So far all collectors packs I have opened have been horrible when it comes to foiling.
The regulars are curled so bad straight out of the pack that they've been sitting between books with dessecants around them since release and are only slightly starting to straighten. The is obviously a bad first batch because ALL cards are SEVERLY washed out and faded looking. Just garbage really. The Etched foils are straighter BUT still are completely washed out and the Etching is not a good look when they look dirty or pixelated like others were saying. Pretty dissapointing all around.

Some of the foil etched cards look really nice. Muldrotha, the Gravetide is one. I think the amount of foiling on top of the art has a big impact on how it looks. Sakashima of a Thousand Faces has a lot of foiling on the artwork, and looks as though the resolution of the image has been scaled down, it's very grainy and hard to work out art detail. I think these would be awesome if they just foiled out the border and left the art and maybe even the textbox nonfoil.
Overall yes but the individual cards and color templates are hit or miss. With a little work on the clarity I far prefer these, though it is just yet another premium treatment that will not match all the other premium treatments we have. I am almost surprised there were not full art etched cards, or etched lands or whatever.
I just feel like they need better graphic artists working on these designs. I don't understand how they thought putting a white set watermark under white text was a good idea. Why not make the text boxes like FNM promos? Or just regular? I'm not feeling extending the color on the sides either. Really wish I could get a non-foil Thrasios. I agree about the haze and faded appearance. The texture looks as if I microwaved a regular foil in aluminum first. I like that they're experimenting but I do think MTG foils need a lot of work.
here's why: they're too dark. there's no nuance to the foiling as its applied to everything. no emphasis on anything just lolfoil. they're grainy as ****. did i mention they're grainy as ****? they're grainy as ****.
they photograph really well, but to look at them with the naked eye they look like *****.
edit: oh! i almost forgot, they're more difficult to read because the text box is dark with white writing instead of light with dark writing. it draws the eye to the background, which is busy with the set symbol, instead of drawing the eye to the actual text.

I completely agree. The fact they made the original Partners exclusively etched foil is the largest glaring flaw of this set.

ugh. i totally forgot they did that.
i also find it shameful that this was one of the key selling points for the set, and that they just look so bad. just so terribly bad. it sucks ass to pay extra for a premium pack where you're getting 2 etched foils as a sure thing, and then to see how bad they actually look. its almost like why even bother.
Non curling it gets an A
Fuzzy grainy out of focus look gets a D-
There has to be another type of foiling that gives you non curl AND a decent look.

There are other foiling processes that work, namely Yu-Gi-Oh & Pokémon. It’s just that WotC is so hard up to break new ground because they refuse to admit when a competitor did good or better that they try to do it ‘Their Way’ to prove their ‘still the top dog in town’.

Anything that is hard to fake is better. Specialized foil are decent against counterfeit.
Agreed. But that doesn't mean the cards have to look like they took a belt sander to them.
WotC is trying, I give them that. But these etched foils are a miss in my book.
The community has been on WotC for curling foils for years and this appears to be one of those cases of "be careful what you wish for you just might get it."

I haven't seen them but I heard several people talking in person
The good news they not going Pringle after quite a few days
The bad news they screwed up by making the arts as if it was very foggy (off color) just like mystery booster did with a few I the reprints especially torment of hailfire I can barely see bolas mouth in the mystery booster version
If counterfeit foils don't curl, doesn't that make them more desirable than the real ones?
The answer for playing is absolutely yes.
Sadly.
As a collector you want the real ones, curling or not (the curling even makes the ones that are in perfect condition even more rare and difficult to keep in that perfect state, so thats actually a "plus" strangely enough).

Its very "dark" and especially white cards look just awful with the effect.
The problem of foils turning darker in the art due to the foiling is an issue anyway.
On gold multicolor cards the effect looks better, but it still looks weird.
The "dots" in the art from the etched foiling also make the art look more "Pixelated" and dirty (like a slim fog of dust).
----
Prefer regular foils, especially the old ones, where the foil makes the card a lot brighter and shiny (good old foil "star").
