That would be an awesome snipe from Scott Fischer, assuming he had known about Nielsen's fate prior to having the art commissioned. It isn't that Wizards didn't have the right to no longer employ Terese's freelance services. Of course they do - freelance work is freelance work. But, the moment that they state that her endorsing a political view, and a marginally wacko website is the reason for the termination of the relationship - that is where I find fault. Celebrities of all walks of life - actors, singers, artists, athletes - use their fame to progress their agendas with impunity - imagine if the NBA canned Michael Jordan for saying that we should (insert random Trump agenda). That Terese did what she did (which as I understand it was "like" comments and perform the RL "like" by donating a piece of art), in a personal manner as opposed to as a representative for WoTC is a terrifying precedent. Dig deep enough in anyone's social profile and you'll find something that someone can find offense to. Wizards had 4 options to the probably 20 twitter voices representing 4 actual people who took offense to TN's social media crimes. 1) Ignore it altogether - probably the best choice 2) Support TN - say that political and social views that are not presented as representative of WOTC and are not derogatory or hateful have no impact on continued employment 3) Art direction is a completely subjective matter - even polls of players have little impact on what art an art director deems usable. Phase out her art quietly 4) Throw her under the bus to show how progressive and responsive they are.
People on both sides of the political spectrum go after people who don't think like them. Let's not get tribal in these forums and believe that "my side in innocent and your side is evil"
Therese shouldn't have been let go. Outside political views should have no bearing on your work, period.
Disagree if you want, it's an extreme and Fascist view to disagree with issues of free speech.
Liberalism FTW.
The blatant hypocrisy in this post is seriously cringe.
Maybe the problem is that you take the idea of a "political spectrum" a bit too literally. The empirical data doesn't really support the existence of a model of political ideologies which fall along a spectrum from left to right. In practice, ideologies held by people are more like constellations of various beliefs which may be more or less coherent within themselves. For example, some early fascist philosophers advocated for a system in governance which included representation for labor unions, which almost sounds leftist if you forget all the other fascist stuff. This also means that liberalism, a centrist ideology, isn't actually literally in the "center" of anything. It's not an impartial and unbiased view on politics and doesn't have claim on the basis of its moderation to be more rational than either of the "extremes," since moderation isn't necessarily the best approach depending on the issue to be resolved. You don't use half-measures when the full measure is called for, and you treat causes not symptoms. If the cause is fundamental within the system in which the symptom occurs, methodological radicalism is required.
I don't have much of an opinion on Therese Nielsen's business relationship with WotC. It seems to me they made a very liberal decision to cut ties with someone who associated with fascists because they thought it could negatively affect their profits.
Yeah I struggle to see how when you live in the world we live in that if you're in the public eye an make poor decisions (following racist, conspiracy theorist and other controversial and hate filled issues) that you'll keep business relations as usual. This kind of thing has always been around. If you make poor decisions in public, you can lose your job.
The fact that we're sitting here saying "it's too political" it sounds like you just don't want to consider that what she stands for is wrong or you think it isn't.
Other than that, grab your copy of this art cause this will be the last time. I won't frown at anyone who has her art, but it doesn't effect me in one way or the other that she isn't working with wizards anymore. Plenty of great artist in the world.
