I really like the Niambi art and am glad to know that she is in the set, even though I sort of expected she would be in. I sort of hope that she is the WU signpost uncommon.
As for Subira, I am pleasantly surprised she is in. I sort of had this nagging feeling she wouldn't be getting a card.
love the arts on all of these, so glad we're finally getting a better barrin. he was such an important figure in dominarian history with such a tragic story in the end. he just never really got enough love as a character on the cards, and his original was kinda trash.

He lost his wife Rayne during the Keldon invasion (pre-Invasion), lost his daughter Hanna to Phyrexian plague during the invasion, all while serving selflessly for Urza and seeing the lengths Urza would go through to win. After Hanna's death, I think he basically snapped, and blew up himself and all of Tolaria. Referenced on Obliterate.
These arts are great. I was not expecting a new Kaervek since his card in Time Spiral was actually quite cool, but since we are getting all the other Mirage/Visions-era heavyweights (Teferi, Mangara and Jolrael) I think it makes sense. Excited to see these cards!
I just realized (as we know sets are planned years in advance and locked down months ahead of time) how coincidental the timing is of Magic releasing a set with so many prominent African* characters at a time when African-American issues are at a forefront of current events. A far more fortunate coincidence than the "Space Godzilla, Death Corona" incident a couple of months ago.
*Yes, I know there's not actual Africa in the Multiverse, but you know what I mean.

Which doesn't even get into all the shenanigans of the Urza's Saga block story. He's foretold as being the most powerful wizard on Dominaria, gets recruited by Urza to be the headmaster of Hogwa- I mean the Tolarian Academy, survives the time explosion caused by sending Karn back in order to stop Kerrick (a Phyrexian agent), drinks slow water (like Jhoira) to give him a lifespan of thousands of years, rebuilds the Academy, held off Kerrick's forces after the Phyrexian hid in a fast time bubble and built an invading force, all before finding out that Rayne was designed for him so they'd give birth to Hanna who figured into Urza's plans for the Legacy. His story is quite a ride even before all the tragedy of Prophecy-Invasion. Even after his death, casting obliterate had consequences felt in Future Sight.
He basically plays the principled straight character to Urza's megalomaniac driven by a single thing. And gets kicked often because of it. It's about time he got a card to show off his spellcasting capacity.
Man, this is like Time Spiral block 2.0 for me, I'm drinking it all in like mad!!!
Back when I got my PhD, friends of mine who actually had no idea of Magic (but knew that I played) got their hands on an image of Barrin, Master Wizard and photoshopped my face on to him (there's a mild resemblance although I have a lot less hair and beard, but not nearly as grey...) and created a new textbox to mirror my own "wizardly" abilities in science. It was really a wonderful surprise.

While I had a long hiatus (missing the Urza's block ) I was actively playing and collecting during Mirage/Visions (generally, Fallen Empires to Tempest).

YES! I really loved the old Urza block / Invasion books.

That's sweet!
I love Mirage/Visions. My original Magic heyday pretty much coincides with yours - I guess I made it a bit further, to Nemesis (middle of Masques block, before Invasion) before I stopped being as involved with the game and buying cards, but still kept up with new cards and the story generally. (Got back into the game around RtR)
I feel like so many of us have stories about how much Magic has impacted our lives. I played magic with so many other Chris's we each needed a nickname. Big chris, little chris, cheesy chris, other chris - and I got EVILCHRIS. I had the (worst) most-convoluted combos, 5+ card infinite combos and such (nacre talisman, enduring renewal, farrelite priest, tundra wolf, caribou range, ashnod's altar, crusade for example - infinite life and infinite 1/2 caribou).
Anyways, I was desperately hoping that Rayne, Academy Chancellor would join the ranks of legends that got revisited - I loved that card back in the day.
Would be lying if I said all this didn't make me want a "Return to Djamura" set of some sort, with sweet modern artwork such as these ones.
You and me both, there's still so much rich history and flavor to mine from Jamuraa, I love that setting. And, at the risk of sounding cynical, I expected WotC to consider revisiting it in the wake of Black Panther bringing afro-futurism to the mainstream, not unlike how the Gatewatch was essentially their answer to the popularity of big comic team up movies. It's been two years since BP crushed it, which aligns decently well for set development lead time, so perhaps this Core Set is their way of dipping a toe in that pool?
Man, I came late in the game around Invastion, although my brothers played with Alpha/Beta. Traded their Black Lotus for Shivan Dragons back then as many did from what I heard... lol
I don’t like Dominaria or old lore but this is cool for their fans. I’d want this for Theros so hopefully this set is a precedent. I always admire past characters getting cards or updated cards
Barrin looks like Volkan Baga's work, wonderful. We need more MtG art in warmer style.
Barrin's tragedy because of Urza is one reason why Urza is such a great character. Writers back then had the grit to create such a controversial character and did it right.
Man, this is like Time Spiral block 2.0 for me, I'm drinking it all in like mad!!!
It's possible that Core 21 is intended as a way to shuffle all the left over ideas for Dominaria into it... since Dominaria can't possibly be done with one expansion.

Possibly, if they weren't already used up in Core 2019. Dominaria design was partially impacted by the shift from 2-set blocks to single sets, so some of its ideas (knight tribal among them) got pushed partially to that core set.
Are the arts for Niambi and Subira switched? Cause the woman in the "Subira" art is definitely wearing Niambi's clothes and earings and hairstyle. And Subira was the caravan leader.

I wasn’t sure which one was what
I just guess due to body age
Yeah, Subira should be the caravan one. Niambi is usually depicted as being an older woman to very little contrast to her much older father.
