I remember hearing whispers about this a day or two ago.
Not the biggest deal at the moment. I seem to recall that wizards gave away a single collector booster with Eldraine boxes when the set was first released. Giving a single box-topper with a borderless rare from a narrower selection of rares/mythics in the set is nice but not too exciting.
With that said, the article does say that these box toppers are supposed to be unique. If they have one-of-a-kind art, that could be a pretty nice bonus. If, on the other hand, these cards aren't in the main set... that could be interesting. Whether they're brand new cards that could otherwise only be gained in collector boosters OR they're reprints of battle-cruiser creatures from past sett (Craterhoof Behemoth, Balefire Dragon, etc.), acting as a guaranteed "Masterpiece" for those who buy a box, having that type of unique content would be interesting to see.
Also, I'm happy to see that this box topper is in addition to the buy-a-box promo.
i used to buy 2 displays per set, but since the price increase i buy zero displays. a box topper wont change that. i really feel sorry for my lgs, since he has to increase the price allthough he doesnt want to and he pays the consequences. but sorry, in the end it is just cheap colored paper and i reached my personal limit where it is reasonable to buy displays anymore.
since we already have premium products of magic cards, id rather see wizards go back to the old price instead of adding box toppers. i know that wont happen, but at least from me they get less revenue now (i still play fnm drafts, so i still pay for cards, its just less now)
So no discussion on this??
Seems weird.
The article says this is completely different box topper than ever done before.
SO if it's not a Rare or Mythic from the set, what could it be??? Tarmogoyf, Progenitus type deals.....inquiring minds want to know????

Maybe the box toppers are a new set of masterpieces, or something roughly analogous. WotC's been working their way up to this with the unique BAB promos.

Hmm...behemoth-sized...not just oversized. Almost betting they're triple the size of a normal card and will take up the entire top of the box.
Initially I thought so too, but with all the talk about additional value and statements like " even players who don't necessarily want fancy and shiny are excited to open cards like this, because of their tradability" it would be beyond ridiculous if they just added something that is playable absolutely nowhere and holds no actual value whatsoever.
After all, they discontinued the oversized commander cards because nobody really wanted them.
On the other hand, that whole "we won't tell you what exactly, but trust us, we're adding a huge amount of value" looks like they are overcompensating in advance by hyping to the max because they might know it's not that great... but we'll have to see.
The emphasis on “Behemoth” and “Huge” in their descriptions makes me think it’ll be a selection of the largest creatures from Magic’s past (or maybe reprints of all the cards with the creature type of ”Giant” that are in standard).
They're all about sales tactics these days aren't they?
And what are we to do with these behemoth box toppers? If we collect enough will we get to build and play with behemoth sized-decks then? I don't think Dragon Shield makes sleeves that big...

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I recall some other TCG had one. Force of Will maybe? The card was a legal size but wen you did something or another, you took the card and opened it like a book for the bigger creature inside. Sucks for those of us that actually, you know, sleeve their cards.

Interesting idea. WOTC actually started to print foldable cards in the 2nd wave of the Transformers TCG that they also produce

Back in the '00s Upper Deck did this for a bunch of it's anime TCGs. I remember those being in the old DBZ TCG. Thing is those cards are much thicker than normal cards, so you can totally feel the difference between them a regular card. If WOTC were to do this it'd mean cards that could only be Commanders. That's not outside the realm of possibility, but I really hope that's not the direction they go in.

It wouldn't really matter if they're thicker. Whenever I use a double sided card, like Azore's Gateway, I always used the corresponding checklist card. So logically, assuming WotC had half a brain to share amongst them, such a card would always be accompanied by the corresponding checklist card.
On top of that, as a collector, I would likely just sleeve the folding card in a larger sleeve and use proxies or the smaller version (like I do for their Commander product) anyways. Folding cardboard too many times will cause the card to fall apart.
I dunno. Could be like the Endbringer meld misprint from Oath of the Gatewatch. It would have to be darn interesting for that kind of card disadvantage.

I know commander pre-cons come with a big card of the main commander
The box topper being each legendary behemoth in that size
It's probably just going to be reprints of big creatures, not found in Standard.
They really hype up the tradability of these, and larger sized cards just aren't all that tradable, no matter what they are.
