The first ever black card that can remove enchantments and maro said they are gonna start doing cards like this for black

So Mortify can now be a mono black card... That's pretty interesting!

I do welcome the ability to answer other permanent types in the colors that can't, that's an outdated color pie ideal that makes the game worse.

I just wish they would add it for red, the color they seem to hate the most.

They did give it to red first, through last year's Enchanter's Bane

You do realize that black still cannot deal with artifacts, right? Put simply, Naturalize will never be printed in black for the same reason it will never be printed in red. Each color needs to have strengths and weaknesses, or there's no point in having colors at all.

Red has Capricious Efreet which is not too bad at it (it can even be sure if you target one permanent of yours and one of someone else and sac yours or similar in response)

It was about time it's been long since all colors but black and red lost their absolute weaknesses.

Having identity for each color isn't a bad thing, it simply means we champion its strength and find ways to overcome its weakness. That's part of deck building.

I don't mind black having some artifact/enchantment removal, so long as it's done within flavor and not en mass, akin to how blue/green has the least amount of direct creature removal.

Perhaps it's an outdated color pie ideal in a format where every deck is goodstuff.dec, and games are decided by turn two. But, I would argue that the problem there is your format, and not your color pie philosophy.

If there aren't meaningful differences between the colors, then there aren't meaningful differences between the colors.

There's room for occasional bends, and even infrequent breaks, but if there's no baseline understanding of what a color can and can't do, or if that baseline shifts whenever it's convenient for you, you're undermining maybe the most significant system that makes Magic Magic.

Can't deal with artifacts? Heresy! There are some options available, albeit older than most of the people I play against

Somehow this is not nevessarily better than an edict effect, because you sre giving your opponents more options to sac.

This is not Mortify and nowhere near clear enchantment removal. Infact it more often than not probably doesn't do what you want it to do. This effect is to me completely decent in black, as I'd much rather play Cruel Edict and splash for artifact/enchantment removal if I want that.

I mean, if you cast Damnation and this in the same turn and the targetted opponent only controls 1 enchantment, then it's sort of a win. Otherwise you're giving your opponent a choice that will work out badly for you.

This was what I was thinking, black can force player to pick between things to sack so having it limited to enchants and creatures seems fine, in color and doesn't undermine black weakness since a player can get around this with a creature or by not having an enchantment.

The "fix" for blacks lack of enchantment removal was simply to provide artifacts that do the job.

Nevinyrral's Disk blew up enchantments since the beginning of time for black decks.

And the colorless removal against permanents in general just become stronger and stronger, so it makes no sense at all to not give a color the ability to get rid of some permanents, if even colorless cards can do it straight up no questions ask.

I get the idea of the colour pie but certain things should be possible in any colour just for fairness sake. It sucks hard to play a monno black deck and someone plays an enchantment (edh/standard/modern/whatever) and you're like well I have 0 outs to this.

That being said there's a good chance your opponent either has a crap enchantment if you want to remove a creature or a crap creature if you want to remove an enchantment so this will rarely actually remove what you want but it's still a 2 mana mass edict that doesn't hurt you.

Well, this can't remove your own enchantments, which is where I find the clearest problem. Many black enchantments are designed around the implication that they have finality in being some kind of bargain that might kill you. Cheap tricks if you can just destroy them, and then the genre's power level will tank as a result.

There’s a reason why colorless option such as Scour from Existence and Nevinyrral’s Disk are either more expensive or have a delay; they bypass color restriction and allow colors normally without strong removal to have an answer.

Designers must be very careful when they create cards at the risk of breaching color identity, because MtG is a game of wits and problem solving, players shouldn’t always have answers; one reason why people hate Counterspells is because it’s practically an answer to any spell until WotC created uncounterable stuff. Black CAN have artifact and enchantment removal, but it shouldn’t have easy access or easy targeting, and must be within its flavor, such as two-damning-choices.

most of the time they're going to have a dude to sac. oh! but black removes dudes! yeah, sure true, but thats a 2 for 1. is it good? is it a necessary part of blacks wheelhouse? **** yes. is it omg amazing staple in every b/x deck? **** no.

Which is why there should be in-colourpie alternative answers like Enchanter's Bane, in a similar manner to green getting fight cards and flying removal instead of unconditional creature removal. Black has had for a long time possible answers to enchantments and artifacts in cards like Thoughtseize and Stain the Mind and through volume of untargeted discard.
Black should not get artifact removal now as well, and red should not get enchantment removal, because they provide appropriate weaknesses to those colours and appropriate strengths to green and white in turn.
