Volrath is neat but green feels out of place here. Im sure theres something fun that can be done with him beyond turning him into con sphinx
Gift of doom is cool design space but that art is straight out of a video game fmv sequence... in 1998
Maro's preview article today said that the C19 designers came to him when they were doing Volrath and asked if being Sultai would fit bc they wanted him to be an alt commander. MaRo said that Green fits bc Volrath was always into the different creatures of the Multiverse and liked to experiment on them to see if they could be improved. He also went on to say that he felt Volrath should've been Blue the first time around; Volrath is Dimir with a bigger Blue than Black focus, and Green third due to fascination with nature.
Gift of Doom looks fun. I love using morph as an alt casting cost. The ability to auto save or murder another creature at instant speed. That will be fun.
What am I missing about Gift of Doom....it doesn't seem good or rare quality at all.
I don't think Maro should be a source on Lore characters. He has shown a number of times his ignorance of Vorthos related things so I dont know.
I’m gonna go with the fact that it’s the first non-creature (okay sure there’s a land but no one cares about that) morph AND it has a non-mana morph cost.
As for lore stuff MaRos knowledge of older lore is more reliable since that’s where he started out.
I find it interesting that we get straight-up Indestructible in B's color pie now. Yes ever since Regeneration fell out of flavor temporary Indestructible was B's thing, but I think that's the first time Black got the ability to make something Indestructible permanently.
As for Volrath, that's one damn fine card. Once again, great to see something different on BUG's color pie, even though I think Volrath kinda steals Rayami's spotlight here, both flavorfully and mechanically. Could be wrong here, but Volrath's ability to spread counters around and copy everything about the chosen creature (sans the 7/5 body ofc) seems superior to Rayami's sthick of copying only keywords but being able to keep them as he dies.
EDIT: Also, not Mothership related but apparently Ixidron is getting a reprint.
Volrath becomes a creature with a counter on it, it could be ANY counter, so funny enough it could run Simic strategy with +1/+1 counters. The only problem being that Volrath's ability seems to be once per "shift" unless you stack it, since it says it stays in that shape till your next turn.
Volrath's green (however little) is probably explained via his lore of experimenting on life forms such as Slivers for his own benefit, and experimentation/application of life associates with Simic and Golgari. It's not his character that adds green but his career.

MaRo helped make Volrath's character when he was a part of the Weatherlight Saga and apparently really enjoys Volrath and wasn't happy with his past card bc it didn't fully represent him or his colors. So I think he's a bit more credible this time around regarding adding a bit of green.
Imma put that one over there with Zoetic Cavern lol.
Also @CyberiumNeo Volrath DOES say until your next turn and he also retains the transforming ability. So I’m not really sure what you’re talking about there.

The first part is a typo. The second part I misread. Thank you for your correction.

That's not how rarity works for new cards in the commander precons. Mythics are the legends that fit the color identity, rares are the new cards that are only in one of the decks, uncommons are in multiple decks (usually each deck that has that card's color) and commons are in every deck. So a new morph card is definitely going to be "rare."
He also explained why the first printing of volrath was so bad
Oh and there’s 2 more characters in weatherlight saga who are getting cards that’s out side volrath and gerrard
