No, not a "separate" storyline as it take place in different worlds but in the same timeline or storyline of the main events, but an all-new storyline which means : A reboot.
That... isn't what a "reboot" means at all. A reboot would imply an all-new continuity. Just like Marvel movies don't "reboot" the Cinematic Universe every time they shift to Ant-Man from Captain Marvel, instead just focusing in a different story in the same universe, this wouldn't be a "reboot" as much as it would be a new story focusing on different characters in the same universe.
Is this going to tell the same story from the card game? No, and that's a good thing. The card game storyline is much bigger than what one could fit into a 20 or even 50 minute episode, and trying to cram in 10+ years of story in such a short timespan always disappoints both old-timers (because the story would lose a lot of the nuance and details that made it interesting in the first place) and newcomers (which would have to "learn" 10+ years of story in a very short timespan). This isn't new, every major expanded universe does this, from the aforementioned Marvel to Star Wars.
They literally said that they will use the same main characters like Jace and Bolas with an all-new storyline. So that means that this series is setted in a near past with totally irrelevants events for the main story until War (so ultraboring and useless spin-off fillers) or, more likely, that they're just going to tell us a completely different story with Jace, Bolas, and so on. Since they just imprisoned Bolas with the premise that was locked forever, you aren't going to say that they just gaves us with such nonchalance the giant spoiler that they will use Bolas again despite we know they can't? Anyway, forgot that this game is actually called "Retcon : the Gathering", if WotC loves to rewrite their own history already in paper magic, you'll see amount of inconsistency fiesta that they'll do here.
I mean Netflix has been going hard into Cartoons/Anime of late probably as contrast to Disney rising up...however, yeah their original stuff aint great on this front. I do like Castlevania.
Well, hopefully they can make The Gatewatch character more likeble and interesting.
Why would you want an animated series focused on a supervillain that would give Mengele a run for his money fighting an evil god who wants to conquer the multiverse, and then joining said evil god before them both getting killed because the supervillains doomsday device gets activated?

It's likely to be events parallel to the paper Magic plotline. It might well be in the "past", or it could be "current" with a given set - but it will almost certainly not be "current" for long, as paper Magic progresses the timeline much too rapidly.
The thing you call "useless spin-off fillers" would be very interesting to a lot of people and is one of the more likely candidates. What's happening on Theros, Alara, Ixalan during the timeline of the sets for Amonkhet or Ixalan? The events that we see represented in paper sets aren't the only interesting events on the planes.
I also think you're reading too much into one line. The article says they could use iconic Planeswalkers, and give Bolas as an example. They don't say Bolas will definitely be used; they don't even say that the Russo brothers brought up Bolas - that could just be the author of the article naming a planeswalker he knows. Hell, even if it's accurate and they do mean "use Bolas" and they do mean in the present, that could just mean something like "this powerful artifact was created by Nicol Bolas a hundred years ago before the dragon was sealed away".
They can really do whatever they want. I might even watch at least one episode so that I can accurately say that I did watch it. But the reality is, there is a darn good reason why nearly all of the crossovers from any game to actual movie or television show just... well... just awful.
It is really really hard to take a video/board/card/roleplay game where you play to something you watch. Every company wants their game to become something as big as the NFL. Some go so far as to try and cheat their viewer numbers on Twitch.
I honestly hope the show doesn’t flop and is, at a bare minimum, mildly interesting to watch. But at this point, I’m so sick of the Planeswalkers stories that I’d rather watch the Dungeons & Dragons dreck again.
Sorry guys, gals and Gonzo. I’m hopeful but not optimistic.
Well, hopefully they can make The Gatewatch character more likeble and interesting.

If you think Urza is a supervillain you either don't know that well the character or having moral parameters far too strict for my tastes.
Put my name in with those who would love to see the Urza/Weatherlight saga adapted. It had its ups, it had its downs, but it's Magic's most iconic story line featuring many of its most iconic characters.
The Weatherlight Saga got super dark at times though. The Thran, Nemesis, and the Invasion Cycle would certainly be more fit for HBO than Netflix. J Robert King in particular had a tendency to write some of the most visceral, grotesquely dark sequences I've ever seen put down on paper. The cards don't even come close to capturing the cruelty and heaviness of the novels. The Thran is a masterwork, no doubt, but it's hands down the most grotesque book I've ever read.

...if you don't think urza is a supervillain you either didn't keep up with the storyline, or are blinded by rose colored glasses. it was addressed repeatedly throughout the entirety of his character development. yes, he was doing the greater good, but the means by which he got there...
anyway, i don't want to see them do the weatherlight story, or urzas for that matter. not yet. not until they can do it perfectly. its like lord of the rings. everyone is going to be disappointed so you better do it right. even then some fans won't like it, but i'd rather have a film of that quality telling the brother's war, and not some half measure where things were changed because they weren't sure if audiences would accept it.
let them test stories and methods out with the throw away new walkers and their crappy writing. save the good story for when you can do it well and people will want it. its not going anywhere.
The only Magic the Gathering on screen I would like to see is horror movies based on the MTG lore. There's a couple of scary creatures that could be the main antagonist(s) of the film. Slivers and Phyrexians to name a few. Time to make Phyrexian Obliterator a star.

Personally I think they shouldn't adapt anything and only have new storylines*.
*That said didn't Urza and other character spend hundreds of years off screen doing stuff? We could have a new storyline on Urza or other in those time.

If they are trying to get the biggest audience possible, I doubt they will go for the Brother's War, Urza's Saga or the Weatherlight Saga. Those stories are too old and I doubt that most of the people interested in MtG nowdays ever heard of those or even know who Urza is.
Remember that in these forums we are just a small minority of the playerbase and those stories ended 18 years ago with Apocalypse, so even the nostalgia factor would only hit with a minority of a minority.
Not to mention I'm sure that if they went with the Weatherlight saga there would be heavy changes to avoid "offending" snowflakes on social media and avoid the twittermob of people who are not even interested in the series, but just complain for virtue points.
Just some Exapmles:
- Volrath was the son of Sidar Kondo, so he is/was a black human and now is evil? That's "racist!"
- Hanna and Gerrard have a romantic interest in each other? That's too heteronormative and as such "problematic".
- Tahngarth shows too much "toxic masculinity", so he must be removed from the show or changed into a female minotaur.
- Orim is a woman in a nurturing role? What? Are you sexist or something?
ecc...
Petty things that get petty people riled up, but big corporations seem to pander to these kind of people just to avoid drama and get virtue point.

Why not? It would fit quite nicely with the tone of some animated series I've been watching and that's before you mention the season-spanning story-arc that's set entirely in the past.
If they hadn't made a point of de-powering the Weatherlight's planar travel, I'd fully agreed with the idea of a newWeatherlight Saga.

I clearly know the character better than you. He was a mass murdering sociopath that made genetic experiments on unwitting subjects, and when his time travel experiments blew up in his face, he left Tolaria rather than helping with fixing the problems he caused. He blew up a continent to kill his brother. Oh, and he outright murdered Taysir. Then, when he finally met the evil god he had opposed, he joined them. Urza was a villain, he always was.

Whatever they do here, there would always be people who will complain.. they go for adventures of Urza, that would piss off people who don't like Urza.. or don't like the weatherlight saga. WoTC goes for adventures of Gatewatch, there would still be complainers as some people hate Jace or someone else in the gatewatch.
Personally, I would give it a three episode rule.. will watch first 3 eps, and if nothing is interesting, then I'll stop watching.
I do agree Animated is a better choice then Live Action.
Live Action would only work if it had something like Game of Thrones' budget. Since that is impossible, animation is perfect.
