Whatever the option for movers ends up being, I hope it's not a Reddit or "Social Media" type of place were you have to sign on/comment with Google or Facebook accounts or something. (Dang, this makes me sound old…)
Well, this sucks. I had this lose happen to me before with www.nancies.org (huge DMB fan here that’s other hobby is MTG), loosing the Nancies.org forums was a travesty (it still feels like a part of that band’s history was lost when that forum closed for good), and that broke my heart at the time, but this is sad as well. I almost exclusively came here for spoilers and see what was next as a promo release in the various ways special foil promos make their way to us, after that a few questions here and there about card rulings. I’m also going to miss asking those about story questions as depicted on flavor texts on the cards. All in all not a good day.
This blows. I don't post here terribly often, but I lurk constantly. There's a few bad apples, sure, but this is one of the best communities I've seen for any "nerd" hobby. I'm very disappointed to say the least.
ditto as many I lurk more than I post, and I've posted plenty
I am not looking forward to /r/magictcg being the de facto 'community'
its a terrible place, and freemagic doesn't make it any better
A social media site using 'real life' profiles is something I'd be hostile to, and a voting-driven site like reddit with weighted, temporary content is utterly antithetical to the kind of community of deckbuilding and innovation that's developed around MTG
What MTG sites even have the name recognition and roots to actually replace this forum?
Maybe if one of the major sellers or media sites like Channel Fireball, SCG or MTGGoldfish adds competent forums it could be a migration.
I won't lie, I'm actually tearing up a bit. Ive been a member here since before day 1, all the way back to reading Invasion rumors on mtgnews. I actively associate this site with how and why I got into MtG and gaming as a whole.
The best site for MTG right now and really sad to see it go. Gives me the same feels when TheDojo site for MTG closed ages ago. Hope someone with deep pockets can pick this up.

"Battle doesn't need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don't ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don't ask why I fight."
Definitely a bummer. I’ve been a member for almost 15 years, and it has been my favorite place since I first joined. Very saddened to hear this. Hopefully the new site will be just as good, if not better.
I guess it’s following the same footsteps as another website I used to belong to: Yugioh Fusion. It turned into YF Militate (I believe) and then it just disappeared.
Have this site’s individuals who pay the bills to move over the lisence of this site to a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License for others to pick up the costs and run with the site, we just need people willing to chip in month to month a brand new gang to run this site. Boom. Problem solved.
MTG Reddit is garbage considering its size. Maybe if someone opens a mtgrumors there with similar style to this forum, maybe it could work. Looking for rumors at the main mtg part is pretty bad experience.
Just reposting what I commented on the announcement:
I remember when I first got back into Magic, was a bit before Innistrad, finding my way to this community and just getting so into everything and discussing things, posting and sharing deck lists (some good, some bad), having a blast on the commander forums especially as that more and more became my favorite format. This quickly became one of my go to sites for just wasting hours of my time. I've grown distant from the game and community over the last couple of years for a combination of reasons, but even still there's a special place in my heart for it all.
So yeah, this announcement definitely hurts, it's like a huge part of my adult life is sorta dying, damn near a decade of it at that. It's also closing the day before my 29th birthday so..yeah, that really rubs the salt in.
I've seen this place both through good times and bad, and even if aspects of the community or other things sorta pushed me away, I am genuinely saddened by this news and will cherish the memories I have. Thanks for the ride.
Oh I totally forgot this. Hope the mods can come with a alternative forum. if not, well will miss this. I started to look at spoilers here since Lorwyn was a great time to be here when I wasn’t on hiatus, hope after core 2020 we have a new home.
So they are closing this site but making a new one? Doesn't really make much sense, why not just work on this one?
Our owners are shutting this site down.
The staff and I are are creating a new home for our community. Moreso, we will have the freedom to innovate and create.
It will take time to get there (a lot more than the 40 days I have, so we'll be launching feature-light), but we will end up with something that truly does the community justice
We have something in the works, please stay tuned as the time draws closer. I'll address a few specific concerns here. But rest assured, if you like what we have now, you'll like what's coming. And hopefully we'll have something for people who aren't totally satisfied with what we have now, as well. We know that our community here is great, and we hope to salvage as much of that as possible.
Whatever the option for movers ends up being, I hope it's not a Reddit or "Social Media" type of place were you have to sign on/comment with Google or Facebook accounts or something. (Dang, this makes me sound old…)
I just hope they will open forums like the forums in this site, with good moderators and the same quality...
Most of the current staff is involved in the effort to build a replacement, so you should be happy with the result. The owners are leaving, but the staff that has been involved in all of the day-to-day is remaining.

As above, we have explored our available options and that is not a possibility. We already have a solution in place, it is just a matter of getting things ironed out before MTGS closes.

The new site will very much have a custom cards section, but that's not a discussion for the Rumor Mill; the thread for this subject in Custom Card Creation is forthcoming.
Because making a new site means it is not owned by the people who own MTGSalvation.

This hurts.
Stay tuned for where we will find commander 2019 preview cards

No longer staff here.
No plans to require social media logins.
We will definitely have a deck-building focus. I strongly agree that Reddit does not handle deck discussion well.
Most of the current staff is involved in the effort to build a replacement, so you should be happy with the result. The owners are leaving, but the staff that has been involved in all of the day-to-day is remaining.
Believe me when I say that we have explored the available options and that this is not possible.
