Nether Spirit-1BB
Creature - Spirit
At the beginning of your upkeep, if ~ is the only creature card in your graveyard, you may return it to the battlefield.

I don't think this is outright playable in anything. It's a welcome addition to grindy/control brewing, though. Having this and Fact Or Fiction simultaneously really makes me feel something.
Tbf, Masques isn't really memorable other than Rishadan Port, the best art for Dark Ritual, and Brainstorm. Granted, that Brainstorm has possibly the best misprinting ever.

Nice nostalgia touch I guess, and dollar-store Bloodghast for an UB control deck. Now, if they brought Undermine back, you could almost relive the Nether-Go days of old.
Damn I know this set only has non-previously-modern legal cards in it but for the sake of my budget I really would've prefered a Nether Traitor reprint.

The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
If you have not played this card in a deck with no other creatures you have no idea how useful it is.
Every Smallpox/8-Rack deck should run a copy to pitch to smallpox or collective brutality. Typically the worst case scenario is your opponent has grave hate and they remove it, but that means they have otherwise useless grave hate cards against you.

That's a bit harsh. It had gush, coastal piracy, snuff out, bribery, squee, high market and a bunch of other playables (talking edh too obviously)

Or split FoF piles with a spirit in the 5. Its a certain kind of deckbuilding constraint and I honestly dunno if its worth in the modern era of the game. You could run this guy in U/W control because we didn't have Snapcasters, Cliques, etc. I'll test it out in....something because it is pretty cool just how many things you can do with a self rezzing critter that never costs a single mana or game action.

I have 0 expectations that this is useable anywhere but Mono black Rack decks, but it has pretty much a forever home there because you are never running more than 1 slot. In legacy I have won games off just attacking with my shadow once or twice and then just having a blocker forever while the rack did its job. I guess Dreadhorde invasion and Bitter blossom sorta do the same thing for life, but this can be used with them too. I don't think amass was super great in this last set but this plays real nice with a lot of that.

Well, it is from Masques, they weren't making the best decisions back then.
Masques is one of the most unknown sets for me.

I do like that it exists, great inevitability if it doesn't get Pathed.

Tempest's art says hi :P.
As for Nether Spirit, meh, works well with a Turn 1 Faithless Looting at least. I would have much rather seen a card like Unmask appear here, though.
That sounds like a you problem
For my money, the original Alpha art is not only the best DR art, it's one of the most iconic in Magic history,
