i mean the issue for slivers is that humans, and to a lesser extent spirits, sets a really high bar for utility, disruption, and speed for any tribal deck; especially a 5-color one.
i see allies in the same boat, it explodes onto the board but does little else. im sure they would also like a curse catcher/mausoleum wanderer, thalia, freebooter, meddling mage, etc. because its those sorts of things that let you compete in a field as diverse and powerful as modern.
goblins, even with the help from mh1, is in a similar situation. patrick sullivan/cedric phillips covered it pretty well on stream last weekend: without port and wasteland to really push that mana advantage you are looking at cards like goblin grenade and bushwacker to go all in. matron and that BR flash goblin are great inclusions, but there still doesnt seem to be enough to prompt you to go bigger and try to play that midrange/control plan like legacy goblins does. the tribe, being mostly mono-red, is pigeonholed into all in aggro because there just isnt enough disruptive tools available to support anything else.

Absolutely correct.
Here is hoping that some of the other reprints / new cards give either tribe some disruption to help their cause. Right now, Spirits and Humans are the top dogs of tribal in Modern. Merfolk, who used to be the go-to tribe for Modern aggro/control, has trouble hanging around these days. As much as I love playing Legacy goblins and my slivers, unless I see a major disruptive element being printed, they will have to stay in the casual fun lists.
Dana Fischer’s preview is tomorrow, and iirc she plays elves? Maybe we’ll get Elvish Spirit Guide in Modern? There’s one spot for it at least.
This is the one I’ve had my fingers crossed for, since the MH announce. I don’t especially like foils, but I want Anna Steinbauer’s Elvish Spirit Guide, in paper, in foil.
the hint she gave (gods she's adorable) was something about multiple Llanowar Elves. seems to rule out that card. I'm betting it's an uncommon like 3 drop tap for GGG or something similar. a big mana dork that ramps you considerably

Slivers needs a way to deal with spells. It has the lands necessary for 5C, and its creatures can be really explosive, but it desperately needs a way to disrupt control. I think First Sliver and rummaging sliver are solid includes for Modern, not to mention the boros flying/haste sliver which is incredibly good, but it needs more. I feel like its destiny may just be in EDH. I really hope we have a few more uncommon slivers left. Maro did say there were some really great slivers in the set, some he thought might be too powerful but play design okayed them, but if it’s really just First Sliver and boros sliver, that’s kind of a letdown
What would Slivers need to be actually competitive in Modern? Is a “Mystic Snake” Sliver and a Hexproof Sliver that costs G and U for a 2/2 enough to make waves?

Slivers needs a Spellstutter Sprite variant or a Cursecatcher variant. Something to counter spells. Something to counter a Wrath or preventing a PW from going ham.
Again, I appreciate the enthusiasm, but there is no need to post these things right as they come out. I've been doing what I can to stay on top of the spoilers and check back regularly. If I've missed a confirmed reveal after 24 hours then please point it out to me. Until then I ask that you exercise a little patience.

Dusk, I don't take Lathiel's post as intended to be a signal or impatience to you, but just contributing to the ongoing discussion. The discussion of the crunch continues even while actual updates to the OP are understandably pending, and these five new cards definitely close a lot of ground. Most prominently, Barren Moor at 236... leaves one land gap between Ba and Fi at 237 (I like the speculation of Cabal Coffers), and 235 which could be a land before Ba or an artifact after Talisman.

I understand and by no means am assuming it as impatience, my response was driven more than likely by a character flaw of my own.
However, if the intent was to generate discussion a slightly better presentation could have been made instead of just linking to the article that just dropped and saying that they are confirmed. Something along the lines of 'Given the reveal that...' would work better to start a discussion about the remain land slots.

So it seems that there is only one available slot for Oubliette - #99! I know people were hoping it'd get printed here. I believe someone from R&D said it would be getting reprinted soon, on an episode of Tolarian Community College. This might as well be the place. It would be see to see some powered form of Pauper's MBC deck make its way into Modern.
Fingers crossed #214 is Shardless Agent. Simic Snow Tempo could have legs with the agent and Ice-Fang Coatl! MMMMaybe could push it to Temur for Skred, but that would be a wonky mana base without a good mutlicolor Snow land (Don't disappoint me, #235 or 237!).
Already a Simic uncommon and a Simic rare, no way they're getting another card. No, Shardless, no.
Also don't think Pernicious Deed is about to be less than rare, and Golgari already got its rare in Hogaak. If one of the remaining unknowns is BG (and I suspect one is), it'll be an uncommon.
I expect the last 4 cards in the multicolor section are BG uncommon, UW uncommon, UW rare... and one wildcard card (more-than-two-color, another rogue hybrid common, or possibly a RG rare if they aren't counting that planeswalker as a substitute for the RG-player-serving rare.)

Barren Moor can be 235 or 236 or 237
Forgotten Cave can be 239
Lonely Sandbar can be 241 or 242
Secluded Steppe can be 245
Tranquil Thicket can be 248
