So i got and email this morning from PayPal saying that HasbroToyShop has refunded me 499,98 USD for my order of 2 boxes but i got another order for a single box separated but nothing more, here's the catch, i didn't pay via PayPal and now on my bank account it appears that they refunded all the money for the 3 boxes. What the actual ****.
Got this e-mail this morning. For those of you wondering I had the mythic in my cart and going through checkout mere seconds after it appeared on the “newly listed” products for hasbrotoyshop. I had my paypal connected right to eBay and it took 3 quick clicks to complete my order. My order was in and “paid” (tax included) by 3:01 pst with about 1000 units sold.
“Hello!
Congratulations! Yesterday, Wizards of the Coast launched the exclusive Magic: The Gathering War of the Spark Mythic Edition card set on their eBay Hasbro store. Twelve thousand booster boxes sold out almost instantly, and we’re excited (though not as excited as you!) that your order is confirmed.
We’ll begin shipping these sets soon, so keep an eye on your inbox for a shipping confirmation. In the meantime, please reach out to 866-540-3229 if you have any questions about your order.”
I'm in Europe I have not received any refund and I've received a positive feedback.. I'm hoping all goes well
Im also in Europe and got the positive feedback asweel but only today i received the refund so they are doing it slowly. Will sent an email to them just in case explaining the whole situation.
Can it be that whoever paid with paypal is not getting them? I see there's people who placed orders after me with cc that are getting confirmation emails. Or it's pure randomness?
So for those of you who are actually getting their boxes:
What time did you first attempt to purchase it, and what time did your payment finish processing? I'm trying to get a general idea of when the 12,000 limit was reached.
I first tried to order at around 12:00:45 Pacific time, but my payment was pending and eventually got canceled. I then managed to "successfully" buy two at 12:23.
I wonder if my initial order was within the first 12,000 attempted, after discounting all the bots.
Well... Hold on a moment. This is partly about when you tried to buy and partly about actions taken during purchase. I've been looking over this thread and the various (innumerable) Reddit threads about what exactly people did during this rush. If you waited more than 5ish seconds for your payment to process you should have canceled the whole thing and went through the process again. I have yet to see someone say they waited more than 5 minutes for payment and got a positive confirmation for that purchase.
Why?
Because your API call was hung. It seems to me that clicking "buy it now" and moving to the next window does not reserve you a box, it just moves you to the next window to process payment. If your payment hung until past when 12000 boxes were sold then you missed it. This is why you needed to cancel and redo the purchase; it makes another attempt to get a good API call through the payment system. Once your call is hung though, there's nothing to pick it up from that state, it's just dead. There's no point in waiting for it.
Source: Am confirmed on 3 boxes via 2 congrats emails, did not use a bot, and refreshed my API calls every 5ish seconds during the initial minutes of the rush.
Imagine a drive through like McDonald's with an infinite number of lanes through which you order, pay, and pick up. You pull up to the window and order (click buy it now), move to the next window to pay and spend 20 minutes paying (or however long). While you were doing that thinking you were secure to pickup your product at the next window the other infinite lanes were processing payments faster than you and some 1000 people could sneak through the whole process before you could pay. Now once you go to the window with your receipt in hand because your payment processed, it simply says they are out of stock. Processing your payment was not putting you in anyone's way, so when someone found a faster lane than yours they could cut in line ahead of you. If your payment window was slow, it was beneficial to leave that window entirely to find a faster window even though this required driving around the whole process again.
This is not like an ordinary store where you go to pay with your product secured in your hands. Despite there being a "cart" it does not act like an actual cart.
Edit: as for the actual time 12000 was reached, I saw it stop at 11,995 sold at 5 minutes after open. It stayed that way for some 10 minutes then a bunch of chaos happened and I stopped tracking it.
I waited roughly 20 seconds but after 10(ish)minutes it was canceled.
The second one is still pending.
My order still shows active on Ebay and I got a confirmation email from Ebay right after I paid.
I've gotten nothing since them. Checked Spam as well and nothing.
Money hasn't been refunded so I'll just hope all is good.
I found the good message in my Ebay inbox. For some reason it didn't send me an email saying I had a message like they normally do.

Sure. Probably a secondary issue that I'm not sure how to account for and can't see the actual workings of from the outside. Many are talking about how taxes were wrong and resulted in canceled orders, I'm inclined to believe that angle, not sure if it applies to you.
I'm not familiar with the inner workings of either the eBay site's build or the PayPal API. I'm just making assertions based on what I've built in the past. Part of me would love if someone more experienced would give a better analysis of what happened, as far as the technical portions go. I've been interested in this whole thing for a few different reasons, but seeing this as a tech issue is the main reason I keep sticking my nose in here. It's just an interesting UI case study I can put in my back pocket.
As an aside; not all PayPal orders were canceled, I used PayPal.
I know Rudy is Rudy and can be very Hyperbolic, but he said he was told by Ebay that the cap was 29,000 units.
Not sure if that employee was full of crap, didn't know, or Rudy passed on 3rd hand info.
Sorry if his name is considered the "R" word around here... lol

it was a lie. he also made a video earlier on claiming he had insider info the mythic edition was secretly print-to-demand (when there was mass confusion and the # sold ticker was over 12k and rising). clearly an attempt to initiate panic selling to scoop up as many secondhand boxes as he could. he later retracted his statements after claiming to receive death threats for being a lying scumbag. the whole series of events was really stupid on a lot of levels.

I don't know how to check the specific timestamp of purchase, but I got mine in a few minutes after the initial chaos, and when I purchased, the listing was showing about 10-11k sold. I got confirmation immediately, tax charged, and then got my super double confirmation email last night. Should be coming in the mail in a few days.
eBay confirmed yesterday that it was only 12k units. The first listing only sold around 7k boxes judging by the quantity listed on the subsequent listing.
I don't know the inner working of the payment system and how eBay is deciding who gets their order but my guess is the first 7k fully paid orders without issues got them. The remaining being from the second listing.

I was in when it first showed up in the store. When I first clicked on the Buy It Now button it gave me an error saying that they couldn't ship to NC (I think this saved me from the burst of cancels). Backed out and clicked it again. Got to the page to process payment. Default payment method was my CC, changed it to PayPal, and it removed tax for some reason. Payment hung for a moment or so but went through, I think around 3:05 PM. Original confirmation email came around 3:11 PM. PayPal was immediately charged.
So I think there was something in those faster people that tanked the system, maybe involving PayPal as well. But it wasn't PayPal overall nor the lack of tax. A lot of my friends who got refunded hit that initial cancel, reordered relatively quickly using a CC, and then had their orders refunded last night. So I think mostly everyone that got caught in that got screwed, except for a handful of ppl who happened to do their second order in the middle of the hour.

Didn't think to check emails for timestamps. Mine was "Wed, May 1, 12:05 PM" so it looks like I skipped a lot of the early nonsense in the first few minutes as well.
I assume they won't be shipping out until at least saturday. They have a lot of clean up and confirmation before printing and labeling all their packages. I assume they will come in by next week's FNM, which would be nice as I run 2x Jace in my Blue Moon.

Shipping is Monday-Wednesday. Of course it’s estimated but yea. You should be able to flex on fools next week.

Goodness, these things are up to $900+ already. I'd say that people should just sit on them for a decade or so, as they're only going to appreciate in value. It would've been nice to use that money to fly out to see my fiancée again, but ah well, at least I'll be getting some consolation prize from Wizards.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I got the 'pay my order' button at 9:01, got redirected to paypal and pressed buy. It said payment successful at 9:04 but when I looked at 'my ebay' it said that it was still processing my payment and now there is nothing at all anymore. So guess I got the short end of the stick.
Pretty stupid if you ask me that they allow to buy 2 orders per account when there are this few and it is sold out that fast.
Next time they really should partner with someone in europe and sell the same number of copies on our continent, even though I was ready with 2 screens and willing to pay the ridiculous taxes I still didn't get a chance.
On a sidenote, it was 103$ in tax (according to my checkout in ebay) and 14$ for shipping to Belgium for those that want to know.
EDIT: After writing this and reading some other comments saying to try again I did so and i managed to pick up 1 for myself and 1 for my friend who also had nothing and went to do something different when they sold out the first time. So thanks for the info guys
Still, I hope they separate the regions next time to make things a bit smoother.
Bleh, double disappointment :/
I just got the email from ebay that my order is cancelled after all :/ And here I was counting myself lucky I got through during the second wave :/
Timeline:
1/5
9:04 - Got through the first time, payment listed as pending, no conformation mail yet.
9:22 - Pending payment just vanished from 'my ebay', no mail it confirming or declining payment.
9:35 - Writing my previous post and got word of 2nd wave
9:37 - Made my order and got conformation mail from paypal immediately, 2 minutes later 1 from ebay aswell.
3/5
Got mail from Paypal my first order got refunded (only the box, not yet the taxes), 6 hours later the same for my second order. No conformation from ebay yet. I still have hope cause ebay hasn't informed me yet but it's not looking good.
4/5
Got the dreaded 'We are sorry email with the coupon', only once so far but I guess this means my last hope that I still got something is gone with that
So after the refund from PayPal and appearing on my bank account that the money was again made available is shows today that they took the money again, what? Also got the email and pm on eBay from them confirming the cancellation on the order. I have no words for this and am screenshooting everything so I sent a properly composed email do Wizards. What a terrible experience.
Everybody went to buy it now...I added two to my cart and ran through the process that way. Went through the "confirm payment" process and the page timed out after I noticed they weren't charging sales tax. Tried again around 2:03 CST with the same method...add two to cart, put in CC information, etc. and it went through. Didn't realize until later that the order confirmation email meant nothing and only the ebay message confirms it. I got lucky. I do hope those who had their orders processed, paid for, then cancelled get some kind of compensation from WotC (not just an Ebay gift card).
Does anyone else have the "You didn't get yours" email, but also still have a valid order appearing in their eBay history?
I'm not sure if it's telling me that the first order I placed didn't go through (That I already knew failed) or that the second one is invalid (Which said it succeeded, and is still sitting in my purchase history with payment and feedback). If the second one is invalid, why hasn't it been cancelled on eBay yet? Do they just enjoy torturing people emotionally or something?
