Are they just releasing them in 12,000 unit batches at a time to meet demand?
edit: 37, 531 units sold. "More than 78% sold."
Well my first order was "sold" but then canceled. I do not think my purchase is subtracted from the ticker. So if there are only 12,000 boxes, then 25,000 orders have been canceled (if not more, lol).
I agree, but it does show how crazy the demand is lol. It must be some algorithm canceling all the orders that where put at the same time (and can't process) and then slowly putting the ones that didn't go through back up so the same problem doesn't show up again.

Most likely WotC are only putting X number up at a time. Once they get X number of fully completed and paid for orders, all pending or new orders are canceled. Then they add Y number of boxes to the store and repeat the process. Then once those are gone, repeat again with Z number of boxes.

i dunno if id give them that much credit. they only have so much agency in the process, and through it all you could see 'sold out' being stuck at near (multiples even) of the 12k number they gave.
likely the processing server just got crapped on by requests, and only those who somehow brute forced their order through were taken. all the cancellations feed that supply back into the system until another person lucks out with their confirmation/payment request. like note how the (presumably) final listing has a little over 4k sold, and thats it; whereas it definitely never did that as far as i saw prior.
your theory is optimistic though, so ill buy it because it means a slightly better chance of a box actually reaching me

if you are just focused on the profit (not a criticism, just an acknowledgment) then the real money will come from keeping it sealed and holding it for a while. there will always technically be 12k (or whatever the supply actually was if different) jaces, ugins, etc out there in the world. however the sealed boxes will just get more scarce over time. eventually that will translate to additional value beyond the sum total of the masterpiece walkers + packs.

I think nobody is safe until he holds the box in his hands - 42.000 have been sold but only 12.000 exist. I fear a lot of people will be disapointed when their confirmed orders are canceld and their transfered money will be pay back

That would be disappointing for sure.
That would be awful.
My order was successfully completed and submitted a couple minutes after the sale went up, but my payment has still not been processed. So only feeling so-so about this until it goes through.
EDIT never mind, my payment was definitely "canceled" and I'm not getting the boxes it told me I successfully ordered. Wizards on twitter says they are "investigating." Cool. Great job, guys.
Well I ordered two and got a payment accepted email for one so we’ll see. Please Wotc never do this again or use the golden ticket method to sell standard packs. Ordering this and the first set were absolute nightmares
So after my order was cancelled and it said sold out, I kept refreshing. Eventually I was able to get one around 3:22 EST. It went through and I posted here to keep trying. When I saw the amount sold I was worried and the option to buy another came up, so I did, this time with Paypal instead of my credit card, thinking maybe that would be harder for them to cancel. That went through also. I got confirmation emails, the charge/hold is on my credit card and I got a Paypal receipt. I also have now received positive ebay feedback from the Hasbro Toy Shop. So signs are looking good, but still worried they might get cancelled.
It's very likely that that counter does not decrement when orders are canceled. This is likely because rushes on a limited product like this are rare and a the metric matters even more infrequently.
The 32k you saw (the 42k I saw) are very likely the number of orders that came in in total and not the actual amount sold. I would trust the official announcement from WotC more than some ticker on eBay.
It honestly just depends on what point in the sale the ticker ticks up. On clicking "buy it now"? Clicking the payment button? When they actually receive the payment? When they finally ship the box to the consumer? Which one makes the most sense? They can cancel even paid orders right up until they ship you the product, so are they even sold until then? You can make a reasonable assumption, but it is also reasonable to assume that clicking "buy it now" will result is a sale. Where do you think it was actually taking count? My guess is that it was taking count on the "buy it now" button, which is probably pretty accurate in 99% of situations, but this was not part of that 99%.
Crossing fingers I win the mythic lottery when they start the shipping. Today was a *****show and tomorrow will be another glorious one. War and WotC never changes...
I was on confirm payment page as many posters here were when I got the message that there was a problem because they didn't have 2 in stock. Saw a few seconds later that they had sold out of the 1st 12k. I looked at all the BIN listings & anything that was listed for under $600 was sold out. Less than 5 minutes later, I saw that they were back on sale so I grabbed 2 boxes & my payment went thru. I got the confirmation, the positive feedback & it shows up as pending on my credit card. I'll assume that they either lied about the 12k limit or decided to increase it by 12k & then that sold out & then another & another. At 4 times the original stated limited, the price on these may not be as high later as was thought since there will be more supply. I almost feel bad for those people that paid almost $600 for a box, almost.
As others have mentioned, this time it was more of an issue with eBay than WotC. While their decision to go with eBay led to this, that was only because they made a decision to move away from their own platform (which was 100% the right decision). This situation unfortunately leads to questions about moving forward. Does WotC work with eBay the next time to ensure this doesn't happen? Do they move to yet another platform that can potentially handle this amount of traffic (someone else mentioned Amazon as a possibility)? Do they make it all only available in stores? Do they scrap it entirely?
I do feel the latter two of those options are not ideal. This is supposed to be a limited edition product and Wizards has the right to release them from time to time. If they choose to only allow 12k to be sold, that is fine and then it just becomes a race to see who can get there first. Releasing it online gives more people the *possibility* of getting it even if that possibility doesn't necessarily manifest itself in a purchase. And that window of opportunity is at least something for those that wouldn't have the opportunity at a store.
All in all, it makes for an exciting, or frustrating, experience depending on which side of the coin you land on. And there will never be a distribution model that people don't complain about. Even ceasing these types of promotions entirely will lead to some dissent and I think it makes too much money for Wizards to just eliminate them.
The majority of people complaining this time is due to the fact that orders were placed and cancelled which suggests a smoother buying process is what is really needed. Which we already knew from the other times they sold on their site and what eBay was supposed to provide. Effectively, people thought they got what they wanted and the rug was pulled out from under their feet. And there is still some uncertainty among people who got a successful order as there still isn't a guarantee they will get their boxes. Eliminating that portion eliminates a lot of complaints (not all of course).
In the end, I don't think WotC should shoulder nearly as much of the blame as people are laying on them. They chose to go with an established marketplace expecting these that things wouldn't happen. Then they happened. That part of the responsibility lies with eBay. We will see if they make the decision that these kinds of things aren't worth it or if they find some way to make the future experiences better.
