And speaking of missed opportunity... how do they do an "event set" and not bring back Sagas? Those would've fit perfectly. They don't have to only depict historical events.
Probably more adequate in Ravnica 4, narrating all the events of war of the spark.
How on Earth do you build around his ability? I feel like most of the time it's "look at the top 10 cards of your library and if there's a guild split card, reveal it and put it into your hand". The split cards being the best way to minimize color screw as you are building towards Niv and maximize late game effectiveness
Uh...just stick a bunch of the best 2-color cards in your deck, in something approximately an equal proportion, with the best fixing you can afford?
Doesn't seem like rocket science to me.
I'll assume you're thinking EDH and while I'm a huge fan of the format and live for silly decks I just don't see it. The floor with building around next Niv is that you loose without having played a single thing because your hand is Coiling Oracle, Blightning, Feather the Redeemed and Armadillo Cloak, and your lands are forest, swamp, plains, golgari signet. The cieling seems to be wubrg, create a 5/5 flier, draw 3 (maybe 4) cards. I feel like there are better risk/reward ratios available.
TBF, you probably lost when building a deck with those random cards in them. =)

For EDH I think he'd make a good dragon tribal commander building around the dragons of tarkir cards. Although there may not be enough cards to make that viable.
Mind you, I feel that this is a week commander that can't be built around any coherent strategy or combo and that it clearly has no place at cEDH or even 75% tables. For casual rainbow goodstuff, however, I could imagine running this over Ramos.

And that's exactly my fear, getting Max value out of Niv's ETB seems to require jumping through some fairly awkward hoops even in EDH. No way this represents value in any other format

Except, none of those are exactly 1 guild color pair. In EDH I think I'd much rather run All Sun's Zenith and Eternal Witness in the 99.
Astral Slide lets you blink a creature by cycling. Which if you do it on Niv-Mizzet here lets you draw more cards. For example you could use a Igneous Pouncer to grab a Canyon Slough, Fetid Pools, or Sheltered Thicket, then you blink your Niv-Mizzet to draw even more cards.
For cascade for example, lets say you blinked him off the Igneous Pouncer to get yourself a Fetid Pools, when he comes back in you might run acorss a Violent Outburst which will let you cast a Hypergenesis. For Living End you can put a lot of your guild-colored creatures you cycled there into play.
I love the crowd that's gathered around him and cheering him on as he's being reborn.
There's a fair number of two-color cards that can go in an Scion/The Ur-Dragon deck so I guess he can make for a cantrip beater in certain builds of those decks?
Hilarious seeing Bolas far in the distance. ANOTHER dragon he defeated is reborn. Annoying!
The card is mediocre. Everyone's trying to like it because it's Niv. If anything, he's useful for fetching two color utility spells you may need in a pinch. Granted you have leftover mana.
Just something about us missing the whole "When we last saw Niv-Mizzet, he wasn't doing so hot. Bolas had struck him down; after all, there's only room for one hyperintelligent dragon on Ravnica." really gets my goat.....like what?when?how?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
And speaking of missed opportunity... how do they do an "event set" and not bring back Sagas? Those would've fit perfectly. They don't have to only depict historical events.
Probably more adequate in Ravnica 4, narrating all the events of war of the spark.
It's also to soon after Dominaria. Whenever they create something risky, it usually takes a handful of sets before we see it again. I.e. Vehicles skipped Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation before returning in Ixalan when their success was assured. The earliest we will see new Saga's is the Fall set.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
WotC really failed this time, we got the rebirth of Niv Mizzet, an artifact speaking of his death. But where is the card depicting his death? They missed the opportunity to make us cry.
"Niv Mizzet Death" was a card that should have been made.
Ok, thank goodness I didn't miss something. I came here to ask if maybe I missed a bit of story somewhere, cause the line in the article about Bolas striking him down really made me go 'wait, what?'. Like, we've known it happens from the leaks of these cards, but WotC has not 'officially' shown us that happening.

Needs more Chromatic Lantern, Prismatic Omen, Fire//Ice, and hybrid cards.

Drawing cards like Debtor's Knell, Decimate, and Consuming Aberration is honestly kind of enough for most purely casual tables.

Wheels within wheels.
I'm picturing him in Harrison Ford's voice, "Get off my plane."

Ugin: If we win, you can have his spark.

AFAIK, it must be exactly gb to qualify for your Golgari pick. So Jund cards would be hidden to it's abilities

I created a deck and thread for commander when that spoiler sheet was leaked. It has a lot of theory-crafting, odds on draws, etc, so if you want some insight, inspiration, or whatever => https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/multiplayer-commander-decklists/807713
