If any of us ever posted anything like this card in CCC, we'd get shot down for it being too good and heinously undercosted. I mean, Merlin's pants! They didn't push this card, they spartan kicked it off a cliff!
He would be good even as a 3/4, but they decided to make him above the curve as a 4/5. Above the curve creatures in blue like the illusion creatures Phantom beast usually have a drawback.. Kefnet has none, except being legendary. Also very hard to get rid of since he has self-recursion.
I can see this being quite the monster in Standard, a slight chance in Modern, depending on the deck, and a pure annoyance in Commander. My Melek EDH is going to love playing Kefnet
Unfortunately not sadly. Normally when copying spells you cannot pay alternate costs (like that of overload) but you can pay additional costs (like kicker) but since you're not getting the copy for free I'm not sure if it still works that way.
I feel like this will be too good in standard for the next 6 months. Get yourself God-Eternal Kefnet, Riverwise Augur and 8 lands in play, draw and cast a Karn's temporal sundering to bounce the Augur and you get infinite turns. That doesn't feel like too many hoops to jump through in standard.
Where does the copy exist? Can you cast it all turn?
The copy only exists in your hand during the resolution of the ability, and it ceases to exist after the ability resolves (as a state-based action since it's in a zone other than the stack or the battlefield) unless you choose to cast it. Once the ability finishes resolving and you choose not to cast the copy, it's gone.
