But then, who knows. They might actually do it this time. God knows they already assassinated his character. May as well actually kill him too.
Someone hovering between Lawful Neutral and Lawful Good taking a big nosedive to be Lawful or maybe even Neutral Evil is pretty sucky yeah. Given we've got two other White/Blue Planeswalkers though (and maybe more) I don't think it's a bad thing if he does die, but I like him. Turning him into a villain really makes no sense.
I think Dovin's always been intended to be a villain. Not a cackling megalomaniac, but just someone who's always put processes and bureaucracy ahead of the well-being of other people. Almost an 'accidental' villain, because he has such a massive empathy blind-spot.
My main problem with the art of Chandra's Triumph is that it doesn´t show him dying or him being in any pain at all, he´s just surrounded by fire as usual, so it doesn´t tell anything about him dying or not, especially if we don´t know where in the story Dovin's Veto is
We just have a name that indicates that Chandra is Triumphing but with that art it could mean anything from her disabling him to her actually killing him

I mean, his role in the story up to now indicates he’s so focused on law and order because he thinks it helps people, not because he cares about it for its own sake. It especially ties in with his power.

Indeed. In the Kaladesh story he did just about everything he could to minimize casualties and collateral damage. Even when he was sabotaging the Heart of Kiran/Hope of Girapur he didn't just blow it up, he made sure that the Gatewatch/Rebels would have time to land/evacuate/abandon ship.
If anything Dovin's having been created for this role (I believe it was MaRo(?) who said that both Dovin and Kaya were created for their roles in Bolas' arc) makes it all the more jarring. If THIS was the character Dovin was supposed to be all along, then they did a TERRIBLE job of conveying it during Kaladesh.
Kaladesh Dovin was nuanced and innovative and interesting.
Ravnica Dovin is... some awful lawful evil cliche.
I've always sorta ignored the game world's story and substituted my own. no disrespect to the authors and fans but it's all kinda linear super-hero stuff.
would prefer a more adult setting which wasn't necessarily about war all the time.
seeing this art makes me wish the roles were reversed - there's already plenty of cards with Chandra on them, she's definitely left her mark in the game and I'd love to see another character replace her
I thought that the cards were spoiled chronological storywise. If this is true than dovin's veto was before chandra's triumph. She definitely won the confrontation with Dovin. If Dovin is keep alive is another story.

It's like they're completely different beings.
Not to mention he arrested Baral after the bastard taunted Chandra about her father's death. As someone who outright despises many politicians for their corruption, hypocrisy, and blatant elitism, the fact that I actually liked Dovin during Kaladesh is telling.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Am I the only one thinking it's a bit anti climactic that Gideon went through a bunch of crap, got the Blackblade with whatever that ensues to his soul and his triumph is just killing a few eternals? But Chandra takes care of one of the guys pulling the strings? hehe
I feel bad for Gideon hehe.
"But his character arc!" "But the full set isn't out yet!" "But the full story isn't out yet!" I know I know, I would just like to see him jam the sword into Bolas or something hehe.

I think the art and flavor text of his Triumph form a hint that Gideon doesn't really triumph. I think he helps, and his motivation is the well-being of others, and he ultimately will be one of the casualties of the war. I think someone big in the good side has to die, and since we know Ajani lives (due to Chandra's comics), two new White walkers have been introduced and we still have Elspeth to rescue, I think Gideon bites it.

I think it's implied between the flavor text of the card and his presence in the Liliana trailer that he saves Liliana from Bolas.

I think this is likely, given events in the second Chandra comic in addition to what you said. I also feel that Teyo and his shield magic is meant to be a different take on the shield/defender type of character that Gideon held

Ah. Well - that's interesting, and changes things. I missed a lot of the detail of the Kaladesh storyline due to still being so utterly disgusted with the storyline of Shadows / Eldritch, so I hadn't picked up on those aspects of his character.
As for the 'binding, not killing' thing. Um. Binding with... fire? Around the neck? Sure - I can totally see how that wouldn't kill a guy... :/
Chandra: Alright, I've defeated Dovin. Now I need some place to put him where he won't cause any more trouble. Ideas, Jace? Jace: I might know of a certain little island on Ixalan where he'll have some good company.

Standard - Some kind of control
Modern - UB Mill (casual)
EDH - Meren's Grave Shenanigans
