I'm gonna assume Tomik happened because a bunch of people complained to wizards of the coast about Lord Windgrace encouraging people in their EDH playgroup to abuse and recur Strip Mines and Wastelands.
More importantly though, Massacre Girl. Oh my god yes.
I think I'm reading it right, Massacre Girl only triggers the whole paragraph of death there when she enters the battlefield and is depending on something dying to the first -1/-1 to trigger additional -1/-1's and additional deaths after that. the second part of getting -1/-1 when something dies is not a static affect, correct? Still, crazy card and as was mentioned you can guarantee and easy kill with Footlight Fiends or similar...I'll have to sift through to see what other creatures have the same power as the Fiend.
Boy, I can imagine building Massacre Girl the same way Gonti is built; blink, bounce, and reanimation.
Now all we need is an artifact with an activated ability that lets you activate a triggered ability on a creature you control. Like a wonky Strionic Resonator.
It would be a useful ability to have and now that I mention it I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet.
We have "copy target triggered ability" effects, how about a way to save the step of bouncing/blinking or re-cast, and just have an activation? Same number of cards required for the same outcome, aside from the obviously different mechanical interactions.
Interestingly enough Last Laugh would be a pretty good card to play in a Massacre Girl Commander deck (even though it would eventually kill Massacre Girl herself)...

Because some trigger conditions are so deliberately overpowered and only balanced by their difficulty to meet the condition that there would be no sane way to cost this. Strionic works because you need to have been able to have met the trigger condition once, and they assumed that anything you could legit do once it isn't too powerful to let it think it happened twice. But if you want an effect that pretends a condition has been met to get the triggered outcome... uh, doesn't that kinda break stuff like Darksteel Reactor?

This would of course be undoable as a normal spell or activated ability as you say, but maybe as a planeswalker ultimate?
Disagree. It's a well-used and rock-solid trope to have a character who no longer goes by their name, but is instead known only by a nickname, title, or another moniker. This is a very well-established and VERY old literary technique. Not simply literary, either, but in real life for people whose names are not known, although their actions are. See Jack the Ripper. They become or start off as urban legends.
Moreover, it makes perfect sense for a thrill-kill assassin in the guild of over-the-top-performers to have just such a memorable stage name, who is not known by anything else. Her name and history are intentionally a mystery. There's a bounty on her head. She keeps getting away with murder, mass murder, literally. No one knows her by anything but Massacre Girl, just like Jack the Ripper, etc. Why would anyone know her name, including we the audience? That would break the mystique.
Massacre Girl is essentially a Ravnican urban legend that we the audience get to see is real, but still don't get to know her name and history. Only her deeds. Which includes massacres with no witnesses left alive, it seems.
I'm aware. What I'm saying is that it goes against the established naming convention for legendary characters, and is extremely distracting as a result. And frankly, I don't think a minor side character we're likely to never see again is worth it.
My 0.02$... the name is silly fun and will always make me think of Tank Girl. Sure, it may affect play experience slightly but it's a fair price to pay in a set like this that's full of tropes and memes
The flavor of these two cards... I'm in love. Massacre Girl will be great against aggro/tempo/ramp (ramp decks that use mana dorks) decks and is a beat stick all on her own. Tomik I don't see having much use in Standard because Crucible of Worlds and Muldrotha haven't really done much thus far. But in other formats like Modern, he's good.
For those complaining about the name Massacre Girl, think about real life. How many people can you think of that go by pseudonyms/stage names/nicknames as their common name? Dwayne Johnson has been just "The Rock" forever. When talking about rappers, do you talk about about Marshall Mathers and Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. or Eminem and Snoop Dogg? Massacre Girl is an entertainer, so it makes sense for her to go by a stage name. Heck, even in my local Magic community, more people know me as Griz than Chris.

Pseudonyms are fun - and as we saw with The Wanderer - They're a theme in this block. I appreciate the lightheartedness in the design and even saw a reference to Battlebond in the two "Weirds" creatures Spellkeeper Weird & Spellgorger Weird previewed the other day.
At my LGS we have a fellow who's Krenko, Mob Boss deck is so renown that when he walks in the door - every single time - someone says "It's Krump, the goblin king!" to which the rest of the store replies, "All hail Krump, the goblin king!"
Interestingly enough Last Laugh would be a pretty good card to play in a Massacre Girl Commander deck (even though it would eventually kill Massacre Girl herself)...
HOnestly, I feel it'd be more redundant than anything.
Where I like Last Laugh is in a place like Kazarov, Sengir Pureblood where damage is what matters. Fun thing with Kazarov is that as long as you don't have too many creatures of your own, he'll always stay ahead of Last Laugh's body count (provided you order your triggers right)
Both of these cards feel pretty relevant for EDH. For Massacre Girl, the board is usually full of x/1s and x/2s, so it is easy to cascade the effect to get a lot of value off of her. Tomlik seems designed to stop the lands-based shenanigans of the Gitrog, Windgrace and other such land-loving commanders.
Good lord. Massacre Girl is completely bonkers. Why so much hate against wide board states? This doesn't readily get rid of those pesky 4/4 angels without a few extra small creatures in play. Also makes Captive Audience a little less annoying once you get over the first hump.
I imagine M.G. would play best in some kind of mass token generating deck? Might bring out my old Saproling deck again.
So she's a Rakdos woman who was wanted by the Azorius and, presumably due to the war, has obtained (been given?) Izzet tech, based on her clothing in this art?
They're going to end up making me need to find out more about the lore if they keep this up!
