How does this interact with FblThp? do you only get their creature or does the spell fail?
The gatherer text for past "Exchange control of two target..." cases says:
Shifting Loyalties
"
If one of the target permanents is an illegal target when Shifting Loyalties resolves, the exchange won’t happen. If both permanents are illegal targets (perhaps because they no longer share a card type), Shifting Loyalties won’t resolve.
"
So, to answer your question "do you only get their creature or does the spell fail?", neither. The spell won't fail. It does resolve, as long as one target stays valid. But nothing changes control.
So weird scenario but say you give your opponent your Lich's Mastery for their search. do you lose? and if you don't and then they cleansing nova would they die or would i?

Mastery only cares about leaving the battlefield. And it is a trigger that triggers when it leaves, so it would effect whoever happens to control it at that point.

How the heck would an X control exchange work in the first place?
We already have Cultural Exchange , simply do it with X instead of "any number" , done.
This card is cool though, because it's so cheap for the effect. If it was an X spell it'd have to be XX casting cost, and then we're paying 5 mana minimum. Donate was cool because it was 3 cmc. Much less good at 5 mana. I like it as a one-off effect of it's this cheap.
Teferi, Hero of Dominaria makes this enticing to play Jeskai. Swap something of mine for something good, then tuck mine back in my library. If they also have a Teferi, I could swap mine for theirs, then tuck my own. Lol =)
