Sad. I was really rooting for "The Cobra God", "The Ibis God", "The Lion God" and "The Crocodile God". :/ I liked how these names would have completely bereft the former gods of an identity, which is super symbolic and on theme.
"The Ibis God" just doesnt have the same forboding tone "The Locust God" does. Also, since we got to know these gods of Amonkhet, its that much more jarring to see them as lazotep coated zombiebots.
I mean whats it gonna do to Gideon to see the physical embodiment of all he holds dear as a Bolas murder machine?
Has there been any reasonable speculation on who the Wanderer actually is?
Besides "Oh my God, this is 100% Elspeth in disguise, trust me!" and "This is genderbendered Urza"? Not so much.
A wild one I saw is that the Wanderer is actually Emrakul.
A) Looks strikingly like Emeria's statue from Shrine of the Forsaken Gods.
B) She goes and comes as she pleases, is hard to destroy via conventional means, and annihilates anything that gets in her way.
C) Vaguely Kamigawan-design makes sense after she mind-melded with Tamiyo.
D) Headpiece and whip-like weapon give her a distinctly alien jellyfish appearance.

I dunno, neither does "The Scarab God" sound inherently foreboding to me. Sure locusts are associated with plagues and scorpions are deadly, but scarabs are just... beetles rolling around dung.
If anything, if I'd hear "The Scarab God" in a vacuum I'd think of a small benevolent diety, because scarabs are plump and adorable, like ladybugs.

It would make sense if the wanderer is Elspeth if planeswalking out of the underworld does strange stuff to you. Of course, it could be what happens to a planeswalker that "dies" on theros. It's probably not urza due to being female and urza literally losing his head over the phyrexian invasion. Serra is presumed dead as far as I know, but I think both her and serra hate creatures power 4+. We'd need an explanation of how serra lived that long as well. I think she's human, so thousands of years tends to be fatal. That's why liliana made her contract with bolas and 4 demons.

You mean like Khepri, a benevolent god of creation, rebirth, and the movement of the sun.
Also: can the Wanderer just not be a new character? Like why is it a thing that she has to be someone we know already? What we already know about her doesn’t fit anyone else.

No, Lilliana was over 140 years old when she forged those contracts. Her goal in life has been to get her immortality back. Prior to the Mending (which was 60 years prior to WAR), all OldWalkers like Serra, Lilli, Bolas, and Teferi got immortality as a free superpower. A lot of them who are still around had other ways of keeping their youth, like Sorin's vampirism, Teferi's time magic, and Bolas just... being an Elder Dragon. But on the other hand you have Jaya Ballard, who decided to let herself go, which is why she now looks like she's in her 70's. Jaya, FYI, is over 1600 years old if you do the math, or about 400 years older than Teferi, Jhoira, and Karn. So Serra could have easily lived to the present, but we know she didn't because she basically committed suicide on Dominaria after her husband was killed on Ulgothra. Lets just say that her life was never the same after her run in with Urza, like so many characters who met him.
A little baseless speculation I’m curious about. Is it possible the Scorpion God is Red. I mean technically Samut killed that God and the God died. I personally doubt it but ya never know. It wasn’t listed on poster and it kind of would not make sense in a way given the god didn’t have a name and it was black/red.
Yeah Jace being sidelined on Ravnica makes no sense lol.
I mean Jaya being alive makes sense if one assumes that there is no accelerated aging ie walkers just age naturally after they lose oldwalker powers. Granted Lili seemed like she under went accelerated aging but maybe she just didn't age gracefully.
Given how vain Lilliana has been portrayed as, and given that event was told through her perspective, I always assumed she just freaked out the first time she looked in a mirror and saw wrinkles forming.

In Lili’s case, I would assume her aging was a result of some dark deals she had made,
and that she no longer has the power to just defer them indefinitely.

Honestly, out of all the speculation on who the wanderer is, I still like Marks April Fools one.
The wanderer is going to be the fan favorite just because no one knows who she is and she has a heron sword that can cut through everything.

I totally think it's Elspeth because when you forge your mask, you forget who you are. You have a vague feeling of your purpose, but that's about it. Between that and randomly "walking" to and fro... along with that - ability feeling REALLY elspethy (technical term I know).... it feels REALLY like her in my opinion.
