Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)

Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Into at least Standard-sideboardable. Still a highly strong soft counter even if it's not as good as the possible best mana-for-mana counterspell in the game. I rate it satisfying slurp/10
Pretty sure you just play this as a 4 of right? Seems better than negate and scatter because it's not so narrow, this is especially better in a Bo1 meta. This is at least better than scatters and negates in the drakes deck. I can see hard control decks not wanting this though.
The presence of Spell Pierce in Standard will probably make this fringe at best. As control, your sideboard is already filled up and there are very few decks with no/few negate targets for you to side out.
A worse, literally in every way worse, Mana Leak? Makes me thankful I'm not still trying to force straight up Counters in Magic anymore.
Disdainful Stroke only targets mid to late game threats, unlike Quench, which will counter anything provided your opponent taps out. Which is how most aggro and midrange decks operate - play your land, tap out and play what seems to advance you.
Ceremonious Rejection even more niche, only counters Eldrazi and Artifacts.

Right, I'm aware of the text, but they are, at least, interesting.
This is a worse leak. Period. Just annoying to me. If Control is too good, fine print something else.

I mean, yeah. It's a worse Mana Leak. That's the entire point. Same reason they play around with cards like Lightning Strike vs Lightning Bolt. They're intentionally playing with the numbers until the find the iteration that has the best long term viability and health for the game. If Quench sees play, fills a good role without dominating, it might very well get rotated in to something approaching evergreen a card, like they're still trying to figure out with the lightning duo. It might be boring, but there is a reason for it. And mostly, it's so we'll eventually see Mana Leak like card that is both simple and balanced enough to stick around.
edit: whoops! Glaring spelling error in the title! How embarrassing!
The name would imply, to me, a Rune Snag update.
Quench 1U
Instant - Common
Counter target spell unless its controller pays 2 plus an additional 1 for each card named Quench
in you graveyard. If they're still thirsty after the first shot, give
'em another. - Wat Arbufalo, Hydromage
Quench makes me think you need to add more until they're quenched.
Quench X1U
Instant - Common
Counter target spell unless its controller pays 2 plus X. That's a HUGE beast, better give 'em a double.
- Awk Watikk, Hydromage
I don't know. Quench makes me think of something a little more than a weak Mana Leak, but I'm sure I'll play it just the same.
Like it or not, this is a future staple. Ixalan onwards eternal is likely to be a thing, and I doubt that they ever want to print a better catch-all two mana counterspell than this. They even gave it a short and sweet plane-independent name. Keep the foils you pull.

I can understand that people are slightly bummed about this not being Mana Leak or not having another upside like Rune Snag, but if its powerlevel turns out to be just right in the current Standard environment (not too weak, not too oppressive), then that's cool with me.

... So much for UW Control not getting more support in this set...

I suppose they would just play Mana Leak anyway.

Or Rune Snag. Or Miscalculation. This is already at best the 4thbest 1U Leak effect at common.
Still will make waves in Standard tho.

This is literally one of the most boring cards I have seen in the last 5 years.
Disdainful Stroke, was more interesting.
Ceremonious Rejection, was more interesting.
