Finally we see a full Zonot! It seriously was about time. The Simic 'backdoor' is also very clever. I was disappointed in the Simic guild basics, but these gates are wonderful. The locket and its flavor text are very appealing as well.
As for the other gates, I think Orzhov got the weakest ones, art-wise. I also like the Rakdos and Gruul back doors and both Azorius gates.
REALLY disappointed to see this at mythic. The bar is so incredibly low for UG in cube but Hydroid Krasis doesn't come close. I'll be disappointed to open this bargain bin mythic but it will win games in standard draft. Also- Jellyfish Hydra Beast. So it has that going for it.
So I was sassing Hydroid on inefficiency(which it is) but, I forgot that RUG Ramp deck is still floating around, and we just got a new explore. Making a 4/4 flying/trample for 6 that draws 2 gains 2 or a 6/6 draw 3 gain 3 for 8 several turns ahead of schedule seems pretty good.

Especially when the draw and life are on cast triggers, so getting countered isn’t a complete loss.
The tenth jellyfish and, to date, the only green one (all the others are mono-blue). There has already been a a jellyfish beast and a hydra beast so I guess it was time for this. Drawing only half x cards and gaining half x life is sub-optimal, to be certain, but it still happens on cast so that's not too bad. A turn 1 mana dork followed by some sort of ramp on turns 2 and 3 will let you cast this for x = 4 on turn 4 and an early 4/4 flying trample is not bad, especially if you have ways of pumping it or putting more +1/+1 counters on it.
Hydroid Krasis seems like a potential Limited bomb to me. It replaces itself and offers a good-sized body with evasion and trample for a good price.
I was thinking the same mainly for the flying trample part. I suspect there will be a Bioshift reprint or something similar to move counters around to grow this Hydra
I mean, at X < 4 it's trash.
at X >= 4 it's decent but probably will not compete with other big finisher drops.... so, yeah.
powerful nonetheless.
if you cast it for 8 mana on a tron deck or something, you get a 6/6 flying trampler, 3 cards and 3 life. decent value.
if this thing had Flash I'd bet on it being constructed playable, without it, not so sure.
Standard Playablity really comes down to how effective Ramp is. If you can get to 8 Mana on 5 consistent this thing is doing enough to make your opponent's day bad. Even taking the draw down to 2 and hitting 7 mana on 5 is still enough threat (a 5/5 you can't effectively block).
As much as X being an odd number feels bad, you can still make a very sizable threat out of it.
The art and flavor text on the Gates and Lockets are great. That one Simic Gate from overhead is breathtaking, and I'm loving the way they're demonstrating internal conflict within the guilds, both sides of each conflict are reasonable perspectives within the guild but show that color pairs are more complex than they are monoliths. If we were dipping into the Ravnica well for a third time, the choice to expand and focus on those internal conflicts was inspired. They were always sort of there, but this new focus on conflict sells a second return and sets up tension for the Bolas war of set three.
I find Hydroid Krasis very interesting. The first card I thought to compare it to was, interestingly, Mulldrifter. (Both have multiple modes.)
So at X=2 (4 mana), this is a 2/2 Cantripping Flyer that gains you a life. That's not terrible, and is much better against Aggro than Evoking Mulldrifter. (You're trading + getting life and a card.) It is more expensive than Evoking Mulldrifter (which is straight-up Divination).
At X=4 (6 mana), this is a 4/4 Flying Trampler that gets 2 cards and 2 life. This is legitimately good, IMO. Again, 1 more mana than Mulldrifter, but you get a 4/4 body rather than a 2/2 and 2 life.
At higher X values, it just gets nutty. On the one hand, this is a lot of mana. On the other, this is in ramp colors.
I wonder if a Sultai Muldrotha deck will be seen somewhere. If there's a decent reanimation spell for Muldrotha, then this is a neat role-player in the deck.

even though its half x, I still like it. A flying trample that can be cast as needed (and a good mana sink for limited). I am having trouble telling if its a rare or mythic rare (it could be my color blindness).

Uhm. I'm pretty casual, but a 5-mana spell that doesn't get me my creature for 2 turns and can be destroyed before that to negate it is not very efficient as a reanimation spell. Eldest Reborn is a nice package, but I was hoping for something a bit faster.

Yeah, but it lets Muldrotha recur herself. Don't hold out on it; you're missing out on the fun. Standard hasn't had a 4 CMC reanimation spell for big creatures for a long time (unless you Refurbished gearhulks), anyways. Connive // Concoct is also a good option, since it lets you snag Aurelia every once in a while. Muldrotha doesn't really need super cheap reanimation, anyways, due her own ability being so mana intensive. She doesn't put the game away immediately, since she wins by grinding opponents out.
Krasis looks great! He will see a fair amount of play in Commander, I think.
The new art for Stomping Ground, Godless Shrine and Breeding Pool look great. Not a fan of Hallowed Fountain. Really prefer the old art.

You can't have Sphinx's Revelation as a CAST TRIGGER, lol. Come on, guy lol. Especially in the ramp color. This is abuseable as is.
Let's just think about this.
Cast SphinxRev for CMC 6 = Draw 3/gain 3 life.
Cast Hydroid for CMC 6 = 4/4 Flying Trample Draw 2/Gain 2 Life.
Cast Hydroid where it isn't half of X = 4/4 Flying Trample Draw 4/Gain 4 that requires you to Stifle (which leaves a 4/4 flying trample) or counterspell (which gives them 4 cards and 4 life).
Why do people want to powercreep so hard?

Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios

Niv and Rakdos are the last two Guild Leaders from Rav1 left.
(Look, we all knew exactly what was going to happen to the Council when we saw Kaya was around.)
Wonder what sorta silly thing Ruric will do this time around though.

Well yeah. Mythic creatures usually are limited bombs because they’re pushed for constructed.
not sure if applicable anywhere else.

There is one. It's The Eldest Reborn.
