Afterlife X probably means you will get X Spirits as opposed to a single X/X spirit (for simplicity's sake), but flavorfully, that makes no sense beyond X=1.
... Unless the ones with Afterlife 2 and above are spirit handlers or something...
It doesn't make sense in this image: there's three of them, yet you only get one spirit? Details, details...
I was thinking this, as well. Like a group of Parishioners could be a 3/3 and have Afterlife 3. I think it would be really cool flavor to have a card such as:
Gathered Mourners 1WWBB
Creature - Human
Vigilance
Afterlife 5
4/5
depicting a bunch of people at a funeral, and when they die, the spirits of those they are mourning also return to battle. Vigilance 'cuz vigil, lol.

Wouldn't that be a bit too close to (and arguably stronger than) Conclave Cavalier mechanically speaking? I have the feeling that Afterlife is a tricky mechanic to balance, but it fits Orzhov, especially with their Aristocrat subtheme. This card is very good I think.
That is a strong mechanic. Good to see it. Hope the mechanic filters down to at least on common to make it Pauper legal/playable.

STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Not even in supplemental products like Commander Pre-cons? I thought they did, but now I can't think of an example off the top of my head.
Retroactive, reprint-less application of a non-evergreen keyword or ability word has occurred precisely once in the game's history, which was when Domain ended up on a bunch of Invasion-block cards when Conflux released ten years ago. There is no substantive precedent for such an action. Somehow, people still go around acting like slapping exert on every tap-and-can't-untap-next-untap-step card is a natural thing to do, for some reason. The reverse, in which people think that random one-off cards that resemble a pre-existing keyword or ability word should have it, such as people demanding that Inventors' Fair's abilities be preceded by metalcraft in spite of such a thing going against the entire point of ability words, also crops up without any kind of precedent whatsoever.
That's the type of card advantage monowhite has been screaming for in EDH. I hope they tag more dies/leave play abilities like these in the future. Very awesome.
There's no way most of the other Afterlife cards can be anywhere near this efficient because that would make a deck full of them a limited, and possibly even standard, nightmare. I'm expecting a lot of them to have an extra 1 or 2 tacked onto their a costs for the benefit of leaving board presence behind when they die.

Oh, I really like lazy mechanics that are named after things that happen in the game!
I wonder what's next.
When reclamation sage enters the battlefield, Naturalize 1 (to naturalize X, destroy X target artifact and/or enchantments)
When mulldrifter enters the battlefield, Inisght 2 (to Insight X, draw X cards)
Another strong CMC 2 hatebear useful to protect your gameplan during our turn. The best part is the fact that this new creature is not legendary.
The tribes Human&Soldier have another tool at their disposal; this thing can even chumpblock a x/2 and still you have a Flying 1/1 to work with.
Wonder if the "Afterlife 1" keyword means it pops out only 1 token, or a 1/1 token?... So would "Afterlife 2" mean you get two 1/1 tokens or one 2/2 token?
I have a feeling Afterlife 2 means two 1/1 tokens, but am still looking for clarity.

For the sole reason that they want to print token cards , it would be a hell of s surprise if they end up as growing tokens.
If they wanted to go that way, they probably would have made them 0/0 with +1/+1 counters equal to Afterlife, which they didnt.
So its as good as guaranteed that it makes more tokens.
Having more smaller tokens also works better with Convoke, better with Mentor, so it just all speaks to it.
But i also think we will see not too many >1 Afterlife, outside of rares or mythics.

Afterlife 1 does make sense for this card because the focus is just the one guy collecting tithes. Sure there are guards in the art, but they are background features to the main person, the guy in the middle and clearly the one intended to be the Tithe Taker. I'm sure when we get higher Afterlife cards, their arts will reflect the ability numbers. A noble and their thrull can easily have afterlife 2 and still depict them in a crowd as long as the focus is on them.

Basicly get X 1/1 spirits when this creature dies
I smell powerful sac outlets coming in this set so it can combo
Definitely Aristocrats, sacrificing your own creatures for grinding out value.

Honestly, the card would be a respectable hate bear without Afterlife. Afterlife gives it some real oomph.
There can be more than one control guild, just like how there’s more than one aggro guild.
Afterlife will fit nicely into EDH decks based around sacrifice outlets.
