Seriously though, while this mechanic is simple on its face it does make these cards feel dynamic and decent. At the very least every riot creature has the potential to have haste which is never a bad thing.

Getting Fanatic of Xenagos flashbacks. Though that was the opponent's choice, not yours (and if haste was chosen it was given a boost for its first swing).
Here's to hoping for a decent 2cmc Gruul creature at common with Riot for Pauper.

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
It's a bit baffling to me how so many people conflate mechanics with the cards they're on. Had the first examples of riot been on underwhelming and overcosted cards like with adapt, the reactions would be MUCH different.
Riot isn't even particularly interesting. It's literally a minor change on unleash, less of a change than spectacle is on bloodthirst. And spectacle is already kinda bland.
Like, I'm not even trying to throw shade at wizards here. I guess I kinda understand the reason of giving the guilds simpler mechanics? Objectively it makes little sense to create deep and complex mechancis that are only applicable for a subset of one fifth of a set. (Even if subjectively I still feel cheated on because I'm spoiled from original Ravnica.) Rather, I find it very confusing how people are unable to separate mechanics from individual card designs.
This. Exactly this.
Not that there's anything wrong with mechanics being simple and kinda bland, it makes sense from every design perspective, but workhorses like this (and I imagine each mechanic will have cards that will see play) aren't very interesting on their own. There's nothing that screams "Build around this mechanic!!!". But, if we're being honest, this is where WotC has been going for a while. It's not inherently a bad thing so long as the bland mechanics go on good cards.
Meh pretty underwhelmed by Unleash 2.0. I've really not been super into any of the four mechanics so far. I'm really hoping Azorius knocks it out of the park, otherwise I'll be very disappointed in the first glimpse we have of RNA.

Riot gives you way more interesting choices and situations compared to adapt. Adapt is trash and interacts poorly with other +1/+1 cards, so that's why it's hated. Simply because it's *****.
Except it is literally a more streamlined monstrous (I think someone mentioned that they already said that it's a functional reprint) with quite a few potential applications (and they already spoiled that you shouldn't look at it in a vacuum, with multiple +1/+1-counter recycling cards apparently being part of this set). The only bad interactions with other +1/+1 mechanics happen if you want to adapt AFTER using the other mechanics to put counters on the creature, something that can be easily played around in my opinion. Not an exciting mechanic per se, that's true, but I don't think it's bad either. The guild mechanics are more background noise than anything anyway this time around, with the exception of the Dimir mechanic (which was pushed quite a bit to interact well with the two other graveyard mechanic), none of them should be played "on their own" I think. Riot by itself might be more choice intensive, but it feels rather limited in scope. I think the design space for adapt (as with monstrous) is much greater than that of Riot. Zegana is underwhelming mostly because they choose to give her the most boring and generic +1/+1-counter interaction (give everything with counters trample, something that was worth a rarely played Abzan uncommon in Khans of Tarkir) not because of adapt. On the other hand the two spoiled Riot cards seem to be very pushed, which might paint the mechanic in a different light. Judging from Simic Ascendancy there might be quite a few pushed Simic cards interacting with adapt as well, we just haven't seen them yet.
if the common guy simply had 4/4 instead of the option it'd be a 4cc 4/4 trample guy with a mana sink boost. Compare to vanila G3 4/3 green guy from GRN. The new guy is practically a rare in comparison.
Comparing a multicolor card to a monocolor card isn't really fair at all. Ease of casting is a major factor in costing.
Past comparables to me look like they were uncommons. Ghor-Clan Rampager was 4/4 trample with a versatility mode, Outland Boar was a 4/4 with an evasion ability, Raging Regisaur was a 4/4 with a ping trigger, and Grove Rumbler was a 3/3 trampler that often attacked as a 5/5 trampler.
I have no idea why people are talking about Adapt being overcosted based on two cards. It seems obvious that the power level of Adapt depends on the specific cost on any given card. "2UG: Adapt 1" is expensive. "UG: Adapt 3" would be cheap.
I'm hoping to see at least one Adapt X somewhere in the set.
I really like Riot. Spectacle and Afterlife as they fit their guilds pretty well. I feel that Adapt is just Monstrous reworded
I can see Riot creating interesting decisions as to when to give it thee counter or haste
Adapt is Monstrosity reworded. That's literally what they intended, per Mark Rosewater, who said that it was intentional, it's not something that was being hidden, and it was just a tweaked version that interacts better with counters and has less memory issues. It looks like Monstrosity reworded because that's 100% precisely what WotC intended. It is, for all intents and purpose, a returning mechanic being used for a guild.

Just like Surveil It is important to note that the changes they made were for fresh gameplay functionality in addition to just solving memory issues.
I guess I can understand some of the hate since none of the new mechanics are complex or revolutionary. I also understand WotC giving us relatively vanilla mechanics considering five is a lot for one set. I think for the moment we should hold off judgement. Yes, so far the previewed cards are kinda meh but it's not like the rules guys ever get the bomb dot com previews. My knee-jerk reactions haven't been great but they've softened as I've taken a step back to really think about them.
Adapt- At first glance it looks pretty lame but Monstrous was a great limited mechanic. It will give you something to spend your mana on later in the game.
Spectacle- Alternate cost mechanics usually play pretty well. Everyone loves options that provide value in both early and late stages of the game. It's not as though you're going to have much difficulty turning it on if you're playing BR.
Afterlife- I love this mechanic. So. Much. Value. Hope you brought your trample. This mechanic is really going to annoy you otherwise.
Riot- Again, who doesn't love options? This is a great mechanic for an aggro creature deck. I love that I can change up my creatures based on the current board state.
Azorius- ??? My money's on Detain. Returning mechanics help reduce complexity. Again, five is a lot for new players to handle.
My issue with adapt is that nothing in UG really plays at instant speed in standard right now. So I can't even hold open mana and advance my board state in a wide/tall fashion with adapt. I literally hold mana open to adapt and MAYBE conterspell. The issue with +1/+1 counter style decks is that they are pushing you into different payoffs deeproot elite vs [/c]deeproot champion[/c]. Wtf wasn't pelt collector a merfolk if that's the tribe's gimmick in standard?
This set is going to have to deliver on two different things. More instant speed meaningful creatures or spells that can apply pressure so you can hold up mana with several options if you want to adapt, a way to reuse or reset counters, and a cohesive deck that doesn't just get churned into the dirt by T1 elf, t2 random stupid 4+ power 3 drop in GRx.
For those of you saying riot is being positively evaluated because of what we've been shown, I don't disagree with that fully. With adapt, I just don't see an environment of literally 5 existing sets that offer me a break in the action to want to adapt. I'd rather be advancing my board state unless I'm playing around sweepers like clarion in UG.
I have no idea why people are talking about Adapt being overcosted based on two cards. It seems obvious that the power level of Adapt depends on the specific cost on any given card. "2UG: Adapt 1" is expensive. "UG: Adapt 3" would be cheap.

If someone is trying to sell me on a mechanic, showing me two of the most boring cards that use it is NOT the way to get me hyped for it. They could have showed us literally any card in the set with adapt that isn't just "You can pay FOUR MANA in TWO COLORS for ONE COUNTER! ONCE!!"
Getting Fanatic of Xenagos flashbacks. Though that was the opponent's choice, not yours (and if haste was chosen it was given a boost for its first swing).
That is what it feels like to me as well which somewhat makes the mechanic reminiscent of a fixed Tribute in my mind.
Also, this could be marking Green's bump in haste that it is supposed to me receiving since Riot centers the entire guild around haste by default.
I have no idea why people are talking about Adapt being overcosted based on two cards. It seems obvious that the power level of Adapt depends on the specific cost on any given card. "2UG: Adapt 1" is expensive. "UG: Adapt 3" would be cheap.

Sure, the common isn't exciting. I'm not going to disagree with that.
I think the Legend is quite exciting and I'll be happy every time I pull it. 4 for a 4/4 with a potential cantrip, a board effect, and the opportunity to become an 8/8 trample? That's great.
It also obviously depends on what format you expect to play. Modern? Legacy? No, that legend isn't going to do anything interesting in the format. And Adapt, as a mechanic, isn't the kind of thing that is prone to generating outsize value in those formats. But I'm a Limited player, and from that perspective Adapt is quite interesting.

We're not in the official spoiler season, they only decided to do a mechanics week due to a leak(s). So it'd make sense to do as they did the first three days and just show a rare and common to explain the mechanics. They messed up today because the rare they chose is a pushed card better suited for the actual spoiler season to boost hype. It's unfair to now judge the other three mechanics when we haven't seen a payoff or pushed card of their own. We shouldn't expect the best cards yet because it's not time for them.

The cards revealed in "the mechanics of set X" articles/videos exist to show the mechanics in their most basic form so even people who skim over the article/quickly watch the video can get what they're about. They're showing a rare and a common for each guild, and the commons obviously matter thr most in Sealed/Draft. A 2/3 flyer for CMC3 is decent at common - the added Adapt ability is certainly bad when you look at it in a vacuum, but in the end it does provide a little upside.
I can understand people being disapointed by the rares, but "THIS IS THE WORST"-type reactions to the commons are typical spoiler season hyperbole stuff.

You have to much faith in WotC. We’re in the PlayDesign era now. We got Chamber Sentry because of a previous pre PlayDesign group making Walking Ballista and then PlayDesign weeding out something similar.
They decided to ‘fix’ be making a mechanic 98% the same instead of...just not making a “fixed” monstrosity in the first place.
Adapt still has most of Monstrosity’s issue with 2% situational upside.
Also the flavor is incredibly stupid. The guild who constantly change to be stronger life forms....can Adapt...once...oh unless all of said change is removed. Then it can Adapt...to that exact same state...instead of changeing to not be effected by the thing that removed its previous change.
I.e - The guy in the trailer who adds two lobsters arms to himself. Said guy fights a Gruul who easily kicks his ass and rips off his lobster arms. So instead of lobster arm guy seeing the lobster arms graft as the failure it was, decides that he can totally beat that Gruul guy by....adding two lobster arms again. No other improvements...just two lobster arms...again.

Maro says **** Control. Lord or Lord....An Orc and their Dinosaur. Carnage Tyrant will run roughshod over Control decks now. Cause settle is finished and counters blow so good luck stopping this spellbreaker from hitting the field. WOTC wants credit for diversity does everything to keep Teferi weak in Standard, SMFH. Didn't see them making sure Chandra had no help in standard during Amonkhet, Ixalan and Dominaria you know for fairness and balance no Rx ran roughshod.
The 2/3 flier with adapt isn't even a bad card. It's a three mana two power flier, which is fine on rate already, and if you have mana to spare it can be upgraded to stay relevant if your opponent plays a three power flier, or if you need to speed up your clock. The ability is basically free, it doesn't raise the casting cost at all sinceit is fine on rate even without it. Of course it will be expensive to activate then.
Maybe I'm just a limited player in a thread full of constructed players.
