Looking at the set, wow, did red get the shaft. Only through the breach is a really sough-after card. There are other minor okay ones, like vexing devil, but their price was only due to low supply, not because they're high-power and valuable. All other colors got multiple good rares and mythics that are played in modern or legacy.
With the full spoilers out the way I'm actually surprised how relatively poor the commons/uncommons are given how good the mythics and rares are. There's some nice ones but I can't believe there's no rhystic study, goblin lore, manamorphose, cabal coffers, battle screech, gush, lotus petal, oubliette and a host of others.
I've heard a couple people speculate that UMA was supposed to be a gift of some sort to local gaming stores, packing a huge product with valuable cards to encourage high-value drafts.
Is it just me or does this seem to be the exact opposite? Putting aside the prohibitively high cost for drafts and the fact that your "buy-a-box promo" doesn't require you to buy through an LGS, most people around here seem to be buying these boxes for $80+ under the MSRP (about 75% of the supposed cost). If people can't move this product for its MSRP, that LGS is really losing out.
Yeah, I'm taking a look at the most valuable cards in modern? The most valuable red card in modern is Through The Breach. Second is Arclight Phoenix, which I'm sure is understandable to not be in this set.
Every other modern legal red card is presently under $20.
I think there's also some validity in avoiding making this set reprint *everything* relevant that they just reprinted in MM2017 (IMHO there was probably a little too much overlap as it was). Goblin Guide and Blood Moon were just reprinted in MM2017, so it's not like they had gone a long time without print.

That depends on how much their distributor is charging. It's still great for the LGS if they make $50-$75 when you consider the average margin on a traditional booster box is closer to $10-$20.
Welp, I missed Wandering Champion. As for the others, I was pretty sure we already had those spoiled, but I guess I was wrong.
But either way, lots of fun new toys for Pauper. Kinda scared about Foil, but eh.
Does a Wizard's employee own a lion's share of the copies of Shattering Spree?! I can see no other reason for them not reprinting this card in this set. Manamorphose is another one that is suspiciously missing.

Shattering spree was just reprinted in the guild kits

They *did* just reprint Shattering Spree in a Guild Kit. They also have a tendency to avoid printing keyworded abilities in a draft set unless they print a bunch of them. It's the same reason we're not likely to see a draftable set with Fatal Push in it unless the set has a revolt theme, Collective Brutality unless a set has Escalate cards, etc. This set multi-hit on several keywords - flashback, dredge, delve, heroic, persist, exalted, totem armor, evoke, Annihilator. They weren't likely to single a Replicate keyword card. They sometimes do (the Splice and Spell Mastery uses here exist very shallow, the former just on two rares and the latter on a single card?!). But they tend to try to avoid that.
Manamorphose is one of the big misses to me; as much as they seem to have tried to avoid overlap between IMA M25 and UMA, I would expect a card in as much need of a reprint as Manamorphose should have slotted into one of those three. Gemstone Mine is another one I feel like really should have been touched in one of the three. And Idyllic Tutor.
Once again, they front-loaded the initial spoil to make everyone salivate and drool, thinking 'okay, this time they get it! THIS is the Master's set we were waiting for!' The price tag was suspiciously high, and many doubted they could get the value of the pack with the chance to crack a dud like Lavaclaw Reaches. And just like that, they drop the whole set to find it's no different than any other Masters set - some really big hits in a lottery with some of the most questionable draft chaff in magic's history, head-scratching inclusions, missed opportunities, and the stones to charge 50% more per pack than the last set of equal feast-or-famine feels on cracking a pack.
It's just disgusting, and a shame. People that really wanted reprints to drop prices (read: need the cards) aren't going to gamble on $15 packs, and those that can afford to aren't dumb enough to waste money gambling on packs this lopsided...so who the heck is this product actually for? People with a lot of disposable money and no common sense?
The boxes are not bad at all for 250-260 dollars. It really depends on how much value people put in the foils from the set and the box toppers. It's still going to have a hard time holding a 330 msrp a box and they are printing a lot of it.
FWIW, everyone is saying this isn’t the case and that this will have a smaller print run than the last 2-3 sets.
Who is everyone? Pre-order numbers on Ebay are showing over 8,000 boxes sold at around 255-268 dollars. There's still more boxes up there and that isn't including the supply sent to big box stores for the draft packs, so whatever source this is that is saying there isn't plenty to go around sounds kind of fishy. Sports and More offloaded a good portion of that number and afterwards a bunch of other places followed suit. That isn't including whatever is going to singles sellers, which is likely a pretty substantial sum as I can't imagine any of them just passing up free money.
As for there being a second wave, I do not think there will be another one. This is likely another one and done product, so the first mega shipment is going to be the supply that carries everyone through the season.
1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
I'm happy about a lot of the reprints, especially Containment Priest, Back to Basics, Demonic Tutor and Mana Vult, and in general, I think there is at a lot of value at Mythic and Rare (even though the price for a booster / box is higher). At the same time I would have liked to see Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant and Urza's Tower, as well as Manamorphose (hybrid mana without Manamorphose?!). I also wish they included Jace, the Mind Sculptor, this being the final Master set, why not go all in on the top planeswalkers? Trinisphere would also be nice. Also, why not include some value for red? Just give us Zodiac Dragon. Preordain would also be a nice reprint and a possible new artwork.
Would I buy a box? I'm considering it, though, I might just buy the singles I need.
As someone that quit and sold his collection around 2010, it's nice to see some of the expensive old staples reprinted. Foil Golgari Thugs, again. Nice!

Like they said they wouldn't bring back Core Sets? Or like they said when they wouldn't bring back Event Decks? Or like when they banned GGT, then brought it back, then banned it again?
No, they need to put it out of its misery for a LONG while and thouroughly rethink its purpose.

That said, still way too expensive and Guild Kits aren't an efficient way to increase the qty available by much when you look at the value in the kits vs price of said kits. Packs would be better. It will be back up in price quickly.
