Incredibly powerful card that can crazy in multiples, especially with Convoke. Imagine casting this card at the end of your opponent's turn, then drawing into another one and using all the tokens you created to make more off the new spell. The only thing you'd need is a single green mana, otherwise the spell could just be free, depending on how many soldiers you created.
Obviously not as good as Sphinx's Revelation, but a cool throwback.
It just sucks that Goblin Chainwhirler is a thing.
It just sucks that Goblin Chainwhirler is a thing.
It won't be as much after rotation. Also, INSTANT SPEED is incredibly relevant to getting around Chainwhirler. You cast this end of opponent's turn, then keep mana up for a buff to protect your tokens the next turn.
I wouldn't automatically start shouting this is "strictly better" than Secure the Wastes.
PROS:
- If you already have an army, they can help convoke this out.
- Lifelink is not at all irrelevant in a racing situation.
CONS:
- An extra WG in the CMC is tough and makes this a less great topdeck. On turn 6, with an empty board, Secure is making 5/5 of stats while this is making 3/3 Lifelink. It also, obviously, means you must play this in a Selesnya or WGx deck, while Secure can be played in decks that have just white mana (and can even be played off just a white splash). It also means no casting this early; on turn 3 you CAN secure two 1/1s if you need to, while this does nothing.

If you are concerned about Goblin Chainwhirler then don't worry--if you are running this you are already in green/white so just make sure to include Tocatli Honor Guard to cancel out the goblin's etb.
Selesnya is getting a whole ton of Soldiers suddenly. In all the Ravnica sets prior, the only two GW cards with the word Solider on them were Loxodon Smiter and Dryad Militant. Is there some story reason for this Army being summoned in the face of the Boros Legion?

isnt the setting for this block supposed to be political turmoil among the guilds leading to a sort of cold war? leadership changing hands, bolas looming as this unseen threat, etc.
i would only make sense to muster your forces.
that or they had to be some sort of token, and soldier was preferable to human or knight. /shrug

Don't forget that convoke allows creatures to tap for a colorless OR one of their own colors. A couple green dudes on the battlefield and you can very easily chain these.
Seems incredibly good in slower formats. Probably too cute for modern, but there are some great modern/potential modern cards that would love this (voice, new emara, rallier).
This card only really outshines wastes if you have a bunch of creatures out. Most of the time its basically going to be a Scatter the Seeds. Overall you could argue Flurry of Wings is just as strong, considering its offensive and defensive potential.
I see this being another Aurelia's Fury, but with a much lower initial price.

Also: if Secure the Wastes was good then this must be great. Or am I underestimating the value of XW?

Hard to tell if this is better than secure the wastes or not?
One hand at lot easier to get a ton of solders with convoke and also they get lifelink
On the other one more G to cast and there’s stuff like Goblin Chainwhirler in standard and EDH

The issue is when this card shines, your likely already winning the game.
