i would prefer the niv-mizzet to have hexproof instead to be incounterable
i dunno. if the card is going to hose decks with lots of instants and sorceries, it makes sense to be able to get him onto the board through resistance. worst case they kill him and he draws 1 and pings 1 on the way out the door. not the best exchange, but the card still accomplished something.

I recalled all the guild leaders had double of their guild colors last time out on RTR. This time it's tripled? Hopefully it only applies to Niv.
I like that he's uncounterable because he's ALWAYS right. LOL
The triple mana cost feels like it limits all thr guild leaders to costing 6 mana... which isn't terrible but it certainly is not as versatile as the last two Ravnica block guild leader cycles.
Why is the ordering of triggers on Niv-Mizzet like this? Wouldn't it have been more convenient to have the trigger that lets you draw cards as the upper one and the lower trigger that does damage when you draw cards as the lower one??? Weird!
I guess it should be noted that not all of the guild leaders can be Rare, as Vraska at the very least is Mythic. Also, my brother believes that this may again point to a return to Theros (or at least Devotion) given the high number of mana symbols.
Ooh, the new Niv is amazing. I kind of wish it was "may" for the card draw, as with Commander there are certainly times you wouldn't want to draw a card, but he still looks very nice.

Vraska is not the guild leader yet. Vraska and Ral are the Bolas-aligned planeswalkers trying to take control of their respective guilds.
I am not going to like it if all 5 guild leaders have CMC 6 or more. Wouldn't it also force the second set to have these costs too? Never mind, forgot about Emmara, Soul of the Accord.
I love that Niv-Mizzet so much. The fact he has a built in pseudo-rhystic-study is crazy.
My only disappointment in it is that Todd Lockwood didn't get to do the art like he did for the first two iterations of Niv. I finally got to meet him at Dragon Con and sign some cards.
Still, love the card overall.

Niv looks great. Can't wait to build a Commander and Brawl deck around him! Also, being rare means he won't be super expensive (even if U/R decks become super popular).
So the rare splits feature the guild leader and the champion in it?
That would seem to be the case. As on the Boros one we have what definitely appears to be Aurelia and Tajic. Although seems the Golgari have gotten a new 'champion', as well as a new Guild leader. As the last 'champion' we saw from Golgari was Varolz in Dragon's Maze.
well that Niv is broken, although he has all colored costs this time, its a bit off set from being able to trigger off any instant or sorcery, in addition he can't be countered.
Niv-Mizzet, Parun looks fun for casual constructed formats as long as you have a good mana base. That casting cost makes him stone cold unplayable in limited though.

Given MaRo's article and the information contained herein, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Niv-Mizzet isn't the Guildleader anymore. It's Ral. Not that I think Niv-Mizzet's been taken out, but it's much more likely that Niv is concentrating on his research so much, Ral 'offered' to take over the running of the guild (i.e., Viceroy) so that Niv can research more.
Take over the guild, and be thanked for it. Truly a Bolas move.
Niv-Mizzet's casting cost is very disappointing to me. Not only is it a huge pain in the butt to cast in a The Ur-Dragon edh build but I don't even get a discount. I must pass on this card with a heavy heart...
I do like that the split cards have a cheap, early game option for on half, and a bigger, splashier effect for the other. Makes them more likely to be useful regardless of when you draw them.
What theMarc said. They are early and late cards, and the 'early' side is more flexible mana requirements (for the specific guild, at least)... the 'mechanic' of the cards themselves is rock solid. The power may or may not be there, but the obvious intent behind the cards is excellent.
