Maze's end would make little sense flavorwise now, I would guess that there will be some other gate interaction. Or they are reprinting the gates simply as cheap dual lands and nothing else, but that would be a bit lame.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Wait so the Golgari aren’t going to be a part of the conflict? What was the point of Bolas getting her guild leader status if she can just keep the guild out of the conflict thats mostly going to take place on the surface?

Vraska is staying out of the conflict to reduce the number of Guilds that will oppose Nicol Bolas. This is actually really smart. It makes her appear neutral, does NOT break her character, and leaves her guild in good shape for when Nicol Bolas finally arrives to assist him. Of course, that's Bolas's plan...
Also, note that Bolas made her Guildmaster (essentially) as a reward/price for her getting the Immortal Sun for him. I don't recall other riders on that, at least explicitly.

This is Bolas we are talking about. Of course there are other riders.
I did say explicitly... I imagine that Bolas expects to walk in, destroy the opposing guilds, then go to Vraska and propose some sort of power-sharing operation... obviously with him holding all the real cards.
If Jace and Vraska's plan works, though, what Bolas will actually have done is leave Vraska and the Golgari in a good spot to cleanly backstab Bolas.

Jace's grand plan involves making Bolas navigate the maze. Not sure why he'd want to do that, but... (just kidding )
The gates made for good common mana fixing in RTR block's Limited format, and the cards that worked with them weren't bad in Limited either. I'm sure Wizards probably has some more gate synergy planned for these two sets.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I imagine they will have some cards that interact with Gates, otherwise why bother putting more tap lands into Standard?
While there quite likely will be gate-interaction cards... I also think the prime reasoning for these has nothing to do with Standard. They're here primarily for limited. And while they're in Ravnica, there'd be little logic to reprinting Foul Orchard when Golgari Guildgate exists.

This was my thinking. The gates might even appear in the planeswalker decks where they usually put the common dual lands.

Rose tint my world, keep me safe from my trouble and pain.
A card that's not tied to a specific color and doesn't take up a deck slot would be great for budget commander and such. Maybe something like the Panoramas or Warped Landscape.
I can easily imagine Maze's End being in Core 20, with guildgates occupying land slots like duals in Core 19. Then, we could have 3 months of Scapeshift combo deck in Standard.

We have scapeshift in standard so perhaps they are giving us the opportunity to do the Maze's End combo in standard perhaps?

I would love a Terramorphic Expanse that found Gates instead of basics. Such an easy opportunity for budget shuffles+fixing for casual players.
They will just not allow them to get down to them.
Good old Blitzkrieg strategy.

I'd have preferred they be landslot, myself.

The Gate matters cards are all so useless this would give these actually a reason to exist.
