I'm not sure how strong it is outside of Brawl or EDH though. 4 life is a hefty chunk of life to keep it alive. For 5 mana, its only a 4/3 that realistically is just a high mana cost engine. It's pretty frail to be swinging into combat with unless you can somehow make the life loss neglegant.
I still like it though and want one for a couple of my EDH decks, which is where I think this card really shines. I'll trade 4 life all day to keep this thing around.
Definitely not standard playable but man if I don't think this card is sweet in EDH. Basically a better Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar with protection and vaguely threatening flavortext.

Well, his filtering ability is VERY strong, no two ways about it. He can protect himself from removal while your'e tapped out, which is also very relevant. Five mana and 4/3 body on the other hand... Still, probably will see Standard play.
He's more an expensive enchantment and less a creature. It would be very sad to need a blocker on turn 5 to stabilize, tap out for this knowing it can 'protect itself with no more mana investment to eat an attacker' and 'dodge a kill spell', only to be put into the situation of an opponent kill-spelling it anyway, leaving you the choice of either losing your blocker or losing your blocker for a turn and 4 life.

Wonder what the ruling on this one would be... It's not a may trigger on it's draw ability, so even if you play no draw spells in your deck, his ability would still trigger at the beginning of your draw step. Love the fact that he protects himself.
I don't know what to think of this. From a standard perspective I can't see him being that good, but that draw trigger is really very powerful, and this seems like the kind of card that had to be toned down by R&D and may well be better than it reads. I'd still have liked to see 4 toughness so it doesn't just get hit by every Lightning Strike in existence though...

This seems made for EDH—
can you imagine resolving something like Recurring Insight or Decree of Pain with this on the board?

It feels like they're determined to make The Gitrog Monster go infinite in as many ways as they can with 1-2 cards lol
Yeah, this is hella go through your entire deck. One more card for the combo, plus the cEDH deck already runs, Worldy Tutor, Summoner's Pact, Green Sun's Zenith. Plus it's pretty resilient as well.

It is not a trigger. It doesn't use the stack.
It is a replacement effect, it applies at any moment you would draw, replacing the draw with the card selection.
So with Sylvan library you look at the top 9 cards, put one from each set of three in your hand and the other six in your graveyard, then pay 8 life. Since with this card you never draw a card, you can't put any back. Am I reading that right?

As I understand it, the fact that you don't "draw" cards also means you don't pay any life. This is how Abundance seems to work.

Correct replacing all of the draws means 0 life paid.
There are plenty of options to bring it back from the graveyard to the battlefield, even in Standard, the most efficient method being Atzal, Cave of Eternity. I would gladly pay 4 life to keep this thing alive through blocking any 5/x creature or a burn spell in the mid-game.
Its indestructibility is so close to regenerate that it irritates me a little bit. I get why they stopped using regenerate, well not really, but if you're going to make something that's incredibly close to it then just use regenerate.
The raw power is there, but it seems a bit... awkward.
The mana cost is screaming "ramp target", but do you really ever want to ramp into your draw engine? For 3BG, you're usually looking for a card that can end the game, not a card that can help you find the card that can end the game. This presents an unwelcome extra step. And, a non-evasive 4/3 body is cold comfort, even if it can be made indestructible.
OTOH, the idea of building a toolbox deck that can really exploit this guy's crazy topdecking power + graveyard dumping sounds... fun! I'll be interested to see what the undergrowth mechanic has to offer in that regard.

It also Synergizes well with Sylvan Library
I'm guessing Muldrotha, the Gravetide or The Mimeoplasm would make good use of such an engine.
The latter can even mimic this for decent value.
