Yeah, it would be better with trample but that's the price of getting a bunch of mega fat now instead of the old days, when we got one a year. Mark rosewater explained it well with the basic land typed duals. We now have 16 of them in under a year but they're all unique and interesting. We have infinity elemental, animate library, ghalta primal hunger, evra halcyon witness, josu vess lich lord, grunn the lonely king, Yargle, glutton of Urbory, grothama all devouring, archfiend of depravity, okaun eye of chaos, gigantosaurus, rampaging brontodon, ancient stone idol, arixmethes, crash of rhino beetles, and this thing. Some have trample, some get more beef, they range from 4-7 mana for the ones that don't reduce their cost, and some have limitations like how infinity elemental and yargle have lower toughness, animate library dies to 1 mana cards in every color, crash is only 5/5 unless you have a ton of lands, brontodon is only 7/7 except when it attacks, grunn has to attack alone, etc. We also have a bunch of sweet cards that grant trample like rhonas, nylea, aggressive mammoth, the new sword from dorminaria, the +7/+7 aura, as well as old favorites like Loxodon warhammer, whispersilk cloak, Mythic Proportions, Epic Proportions, Eldrazi Conscription, akroma's sword, and plenty others while indestructible is a lot rarer.
I actually prefer a huge aura like +7/+7 and trample from m19 on the wurm. Of course, the aura is better on Grunn because 17/17 doubled is 34/34.
1. I am super happy that the promo is garbage.
2. I am really curious if convoke will be in the actual set. They may want 1-2 returning mechanics to avoid having 5 brand new mechanics. That being said, I was hoping for 5 new mechanics.
- Oh no! A leviathan wurm is about to trample to city! What shall we do?
- A simple stream of 1/1 thopters will hold it off indefinitely.
- Trample averted.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I just don't see what about this card makes it indestructible like a god and 16/16 to be more massive than the mightiest Eldrazi titan. It's not a Legend. It's an ugly, basic wurm. And it's on Ravnica of all planes. I was annoyed enough with Worldspine Wurm tying Emrakul the first time. But if it sells boxes I guess... Boy I sure am glad Emrakul and Kozilek didn't invade Ravnica considering the plane is full of these and can smash right through them, while countless other planes fell? Just a flavor fail all around for me as a Vorthos
Indestructible seems kind of redundant on a body that big. Trample would've been a better option.
But as for Convoke, it makes sense that they're using older mechanics. It's getting to the point where they don't have much wiggle room in new mechanics without introducing new card types, colours or what have you. I wonder if some of the other guilds might have a returning mechanic too. I just hope Boros RW doesn't get Radiance again

While I agree with you that trample would probably be better on the card itself, trample is generally a lot easier to give a creature than indestructible. As in, get this out and attack with it and Goreclaw and you're fine. (Or Rhonas, except that rotates out.)
Also, just to be clear, the fact that this is the largest (non-Marit Lage) creature in the multiverse but doesn't trample is not necessarily a flavor fail. Trample isn't just about size, it's a state of mind. If the big hungry wurm stops to fight and eat everything in its path, it won't as easily trample through to hit your opponent.
Happy that it's dollar bin fodder but puzzled by the hit and miss nature of buy a box promos.
Not a super fan of Convoke returning, hopefully we get some good removal like Path to Exile to counter this.
Fun Timmy card I guess?

Shame that The Eldrazi Titans don't have sets of abilities that set them apart from just being fatties or anything.
It isn't like This thing isn't gonna get blocked by Ulamog forever or something.
Edit : BTW making me defend the Eldrazi is bad and you should feel bad for making me doing it.

I like convoke, but I hope this doesn't mean "nothing but returning mechanics". Which, looking at the options:
Dear Lord, I hope we don't see a return of forecast. Detain was good, but forecast always frustrated me.
No one liked haunt. Extort is cute, but has color pie issues. (That said, I could see exploit.)
Transmute is broken, and cipher is just bad.
Actually, I like both Izzet mechanics. 👍
I like hellbent in theory, but in practice, it doesn't outweigh the costs of being in topdeck mode. Unleashed is fun, but a Simic player can just give your guys +1/+1 counters as a sort of Panic. Something I'm fond of, but many players aren't.
Overpowered linear mechanic makes for deck homogeneity. Though Commander players can debate the merits of scavenge, it was actually good in limited.
I always liked bloodthirst and bloodrush, even if the names are both silly. What I really like about Gruul is how they invert the usual: Red is usually deadly early on, but really weak late-game; green is the reverse. Gruul tricks opponents into letting those creatures go unblocked, and then comes the direct damage. 👍 Fun fact: Proto-daunt (what I call daunt X, where X is the creature's power, in contrast to daunt 2, the modern form) was first shown on a bloodthirst creature, though said card, being a 4/3 with bloodthirst 1 for seven mana, is just a tad overcosted.
Fun fact: Radiance convinced many players Boros was a spell guild. (Which is funny, since it features white, the color most focused on permanents. Or green is. They kinda share that, but green focuses more on lands, white more on green's natural enemy, artifacts.) I do like battalion, but I wish we could separate Selesnya from Boros more.
I liked both Selesnya mechanics. 👍
Again, I honestly liked both graft and evolve, but I liked graft more for the Island of Dr. Moreau feel of the Simic. And evolve always felt limited; with graft, I get all kinds of synergy with Doubling Season,
16/16 without trample is kinda, eh, I always question the value of big creatures with no evasion and no pseudo-evasion like trample or menace. A card like Lure or Mage Slayer fixes that, though, but at some point, you've got to wonder if just swinging with all your d00dz is better.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

The paradox is, without non-trample fatties why should any card grant trample? Sure the card granting trample could also boost power (like most Overwhelm effects), but having to treat trample as purely rider text on power boosts is kind of disappointing. In this new era of dinosaurs, it would not be surprising if we start seeing some cheap enchantment that grants trample to creatures above power X or other fling type effects that make high power creatures intrinsically valuable, with or without trample.
It's too bad Temur Battle Rage specifically has Temur in its name. I could plausibly see Gruul getting Ferocious, but if they reprinted TBR it would need a new name.

Also, I wonder how Ravnica makes sense as a plane since giant wurms seem to periodically destroy entire city wards.
